Has anyone had a tree stump removed and if so what was the cost? It is $220 per day to hire a stump grinder and I just wanted to see how cost effective that is versus paying someone to do the whole job.

from memory it cost us about $40 per stump, but I'd need to check that when I got home.

I probably should have put "removing tree stumps" as the title huh!

$40 would be a bargain but maybe you had smaller trees? This is a 50 year old plum tree that the previous owners absolutely butchered so is pretty big.

We had a quote for 6 stumps to be ground down and the quote was $450. We got this quote done in the last 6 months. We had 3 quotes all up and they all came in at the same price.

hmm i'm not sure Dh works for the local council in the parks dept i know though di it but if have no idea how much they charge. I would say though that if you only have a couple it would be cheaper to get it done then to hire one for a day and do it yourself.

thanks everyone, Stacey we have thought about chopping it out ourselves, but it is a pretty massive tree and we also want to replant near it so thought we should take it out properly.

Don't stump grinders just grind the stump down so that you can put dirt overtop. I didn't think they took out the massive roots etc?? We had a massive pohtukawa tree that the previous owners totally butchered and it was half dead. Diameter of the stump was pretty close to a metre.

All we did was dug down a bit, attacked it with an axe to get rid of the main stump and found the biggest roots that went out from the trunk and used a hoe to pull them up and cut them. We didn't get all the roots but got rid of some of the massive ones.

They don't take out all the roots, you are dead right.

Your way would work perfectly, I just don't know if I have that much stamina!

lol if you do it just do it in bits. Dig down and have a go with the axe, have a rest and go do something else and then go finish the stump. Have a rest and maybe the next day go attack the roots. You only really need to get rid of the really big ones if you wanna replant. If my mum was doing it shes a mad woman and would have it done in a few hours but it takes us a couple of days cause we don't have that kinda stamina either

You are right, with a couple of weekends of hard work we probably could do it ourselves. Oh to have the disposable income to pay people to do everything......

Yeah I know! We have a cabbage tree we have to dig out and they are hideous things cause the trunk goes down soooo far

We had a big tree taken down (for $400) and then the stump removed and big roots ground out for an extra $100 (in Wellington). It made such a difference to get the roots done as well, as some of them were monstrous and it would have been years before we could have planted in that area - plus we got heaps of mulch :-)

Hi everyone!!1

We have a stump grinder (very big 30HP self-drive etc, the DH's go ooohh and start drooling!!!)

Where abouts in NZ are you, if your in Waikato DH can come and give you a quote. Otherwise it is $150 a hour but it gets through a massive massive stump in a hour.

We go down to approx 30cm below the soil and will get most of the main roots, the ones that are left arnt a major unless you are wanting to put in foundations etc.

You will need to (regardless of who or what stumpgrinds it) remove all the stumpgrindings and replace them with soil, (if you are wanting to replant anything there) as for some reason nothing seems to grow in the stumpgrinding mixture.

Hope that helps.....

Annnddd, Just thought I should warn you that those little walk behind hire ones are very very hard work to use as you have to control all its movements yourself.

How big (diameter) is your stump, I could ask DH when he gets home about a very ball-park price if you want.

Hi rosie, unfortunatey we are in Wellington, not Waikato, would have been great to help out a family on here by sending some business their way.

I'd say it is probably about 700mm diameter. We don't want to plant exactly on top of it, almost on either side really. I can't understand why the previous owners butchered the tree in the first place, it can't have blocked any sun but did block the neighbours, now we can see straight into each others kitchens. My plan is to remove the remains of the plum tree and then plant three trees along the fence line to screen them out (just need to find some fast growing, hopefully evergreen trees).

That was a really big plum tree!!!

I'll ask DH about it when he gets home tonight, and see if he has any ideas for replacment trees, is there houses etc quite close to where the trees need to be planted? Just if so you dont want anything that gets too big otherwise in five years you are going to have the arborist returning to take them down without removing your house!!! You wouldnt believe the number of people that plant trees that are going to be absolutely massive a metre away from their house then wonder why the tree is getting so big!!!!

Maybe it wasn't a plum tree.... that's what they told us it was but it is currently a tree with chopped off branches of varying lengths and no foliage whatsoever, it could be anything.

I know that is the problem isn't it, you want trees big enough to screen them out and you want it now, not thinking about how huge they'll be later. It doesn't help that I'm very impatient.

We've tried to stick to stuff that won't get too big, large shrubs or small trees apart from the Kowhai I planted. That's closer to my neighbours house than mine though and shouldn't cause any problems until long after I've left
