Well Amelias been breastfed for the past 8months and has never had formular , as i am going back to work in May i am going to start her on formular within the nxt month or so , i do plan to combine breastfeeding and formular once im back at work , i would love to be able to send her off to daycare with bottles of expressed milk but i realise thats not practical as i find it very hard to express and never am able to get much out at a time . My question is : what brand and type of formular is good ? i know nothing about any of them . to my knowledge she has no alergies to anything , she use to suffer from colic and reflux but hasnt had that since she was about 4 months old so all in all i think shes pretty normal and doesnt need anything too fancy . i just dont know where to start . ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I'm not sure of the exact brands in NZ, but a few of them do single "serve" sachets so you could buy a few of each and try them out, see what Amelia prefers.
Callum has been on NAN Pro since 5mo, it's sold in NZ as NAN Pro Gold. Some people find the Gold ones bung them up a bit but we haven't found that at all. I also bought Karicare and Heinz Nurture while we were in NZ (just the regular one for C's age at the time) as it was cheaper than NAN and he drank that fine too, he really isn't fussy 
Karicare definitely does the sachets, so maybe start there? Do you have any friends who are formula feeding? You could ask nicely if you can have a couple of feeds worth of powder to try. HTH! ------------- SJ Callum - Dec 2008 Daniel - Oct 2010 |

We personally use Karicare (just the normal one, not the Gold one), for no other reason than it was what they were given in hospital. Different babies react in different ways to different formulas though...so it may be worth getting some sachets, try maybe one feed a day on them and allow a few days for it to get into her system to see how she goes on it. |

Josh was formula fed from about 2wks and we started with Karicare which was good but he was pretty spilly and constipated on it when he was older i switched him to S26 which suited him much better in hindsight i should have tried him on it sooner but didnt really know any better. You need to try them on a formula for a week or two to really get a feel for how they will react with it as their system need time to settle into the formula before you know if any issues they have on it are going to stay or not. At 8mths tho you shouldnt have too many problems i dont think.
I have heard of a lot more kids suiting the S26 formula I only started with Karicare as it was recommended by MW and was the only one i ever saw advertised on tv and they made it sound like liquid gold just probably wasnt the best fit for Josh Heinz was ok but i think i only used that at the toddler milk stage when the supermarket run out of the other. Oh and Gold formulas were more trouble than they were worth Josh never liked them and got pretty unsettled so i personally would avoid them but all kids are different. -------------

we used karicare with bailey - just the normal one not gold and with aidan he was put on s26 in NICU so just continued
Id go to the supermaket and buy a few single sachets to try before going ahead and buying a big tin |

Daniel has been on Karicare Gold formula since he was 3 weeks old. Its been excellent for him and the sachets are handy.
I agree that if you buy some sachets and try it out rather than a whole tin. She may be a bit more spilly after the first few feeds while she gets used to the difference from breastmilk. Liam has Karicare and we have no problems, he was on gold for the first week but it didn't sit well with him so we switched.

Like others have said each baby is different. I would go with sachets until you find a formula that suits |

I develop infant formulas, and to be honest the regulations are so strict that really theres not much in it between the brands (apart from specialised formulas). The main difference is the gold formulations have extra goodies in them, but as you've gone this far with BFing and she will still be partly BF'd, I'd just go for the standard cheaper formula. Also I've noticed more bubs have issues with the gold ones.
Karicare and Heinz are both made in NZ (and I got samples from work) so I've mainly used them with Jake. He still has Heinz gold toddler at night. I preferred Heinz as Karicare was frothier. They tend to be cheaper than ones made overseas (not because they are inferior, so don't feel you need to buy a more exp brand as it won't necessarily be better!). When Morgan started one formula at night (4mths) we tried karicare and it made her burpy. Then I tried Novolac sweet dreams and she slept way better on it and wasn't burpy, and when we went away I tried sachets of karicare and she didn't sleep so well, so I've stuck to the Novolac. But now that Millie-moo is sleeping well you won't need anything like that! I'd just get a Karicare and Heinz sachet and try them both, then pick one and stick to the same brand so she gets used to it.  ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |
