We are looking at going down south in August/September this year.

We are thinking of flying into Wellington, spending the day and night there (do Te Papa etc) then catching the ferry over to Blenheim to spend two or three days. We would then just fly out of either of the those two places back to Auckland.

What is there to do in Blenheim/Nelson? I haven't been to either place for a very long time!

Our other option is Queenstown.   Good/bad, yes/no????

Now to weigh up the odds of where would be the best place to go with a toddler in tow

All advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'd rather go to queenstown in the winter season than blenheim but then around the warmer season blenheim would be cooler. I know thats probably not much help lol

lol Stacey, me too, but Queestown can be quite a lot more pricey I am thinking!

DH is heading to the UK for most of April, so his trip is consuming most of our holiday slush fund this year, but I have decided that we still need to do a little family holiday too

There's quite a lot to do around Nelson/Blenheim, although I agree, probably more to do around Queenstown (or Wanaka) and it will be nicer down there in winter. Most of my personal favourite things to do in Nelson and Marlborough involve wine, food and the beach which isn't so fun when it's freezing!

However, we spent Easter weekend in Golden Bay with SIL, BIL and their wee boy a few years ago and we had a great time. We rented a holiday home which was massive but pretty reasonable and had lots of room outside for DN to play. We visited Jesters (I think it's called!) which has a cafe and gardens and tame eels (!) and drove over to Kaiteriteri to play on the beach. We also had a picnic at Rabbit Island but it was a bit chilly!

I'm sure there's loads to do in/around Blenheim as well but we were only there for a day with Callum on our last visit and spent it catching up with people and having family portraits done in the park

Some of the wineries close their restaurants in winter but Allan Scott is open and they do great seafood chowder

If you did wanna go down south you could always stay in arrowtown rather than queenstown itself, that would save some $$. Arrowtown is really pretty and I spent a week looking around on foot.

Blenheim is a bit of a hole! Wine is the only thing worth doing there, but the wine is good. You could also get a nice bach in the sounds for some r and r and walk some of Queen Charlotte track, go out on a boat trip.

There is a more to do in Nelson, and if you wanted a night out my mother would love to babysit (seriously!). Some ideas include markets, Kaiteriteri beach, Able Tasman, golden bay, mini zoo in Nelson, wineries...

Other options are Hamner springs and Kaikoura.

If you want Qtown, it might be best to fly from Welly rather than drive.

Actually Blenheim is really lovely, and there is so much to do here for families etc, its a really lovely place - which is why I chose to live here not nelhole or christchurchole or auckhole or any other number of places.
There is alot more on offer here than wine, perhaps if you spent some time here with an open mind you might not be so damn quick to call it a hole.
RUDE.
