Im sure there is a thread on here somewhere about this but I cant find it. How do you tell if a baby has reflux or something or if its just normal old wind? Addy brings up heaps of wind really well but sometimes she is obviously in pain and can be asleep but then get all wriggle and cry out so then we have to get her back to sleep and 5 mintutes later it happens all over again plus it happens more if she is on her back. Ive tried gripe water and it doesnt really seem to work that well. Any ideas?

Wind: Bringing legs up, sometimes arching of the back, obvious relief after wind being bought up. Better for moving around, slight jiggling up and down.

Colic: Brings legs up, cries at the same time each day for an extended period of time, for around 2-4 hours a time per day. Screams after feeds later in the day.

Reflux: Continual spilling after feeds, usually with distressed crying. Arching of the back. Screaming and fearful when lying down. Often hiccups, makes choking sounds, coughing and gagging.

Silent reflux: As reflux but without vomiting.

Jacks reflux symptoms were not wanting to sleep for anymore than 20 mins at a time and that would be upright with a dummy, frequent feeding followed by screaming after a feed, Every now and then a giant spew that would cover him (no exaggeration). We also used to hear him spew and then swallow it back down without any coming out. He also wasn't putting on much weight he was in the 50% when born then down to 25% he is now 75% Sometimes a burp after a feed would calm him and sometimes not.
Things that helped: dummy, tilted bed and not putting him down flat straight after a feed.

Hope she doesn't have it Robyn, try talking to plunket or taking to the doctor because plunket aren't allowed to diagnose it. If she does have it there are medicines to take which make a big difference.

Hey Robyn, Try sleeping her basinette on a bit of an incline, head raised. (they say 45degrees but whatever will help). It helps with reflux but it also helps with colic and wind so i guess you cant loose. My girls had to sleep on their tummys because they were worse on their backs too!

Addys symptoms sounds like silent reflux but in saying that she has been much better. I have been putting her on her tummy to sleep during the day because I have a breathing monitor and she is in the lounge with us anyway so I can keep an eye on her. She gets the hiccups all the time and coughs when she is feeding but doesnt spill at all. THanks for the info guys
