In the next few month I am probably going to be travelling to both places for work and was thinking of extending it to take the kids and hubby but when Ive gone for work Ive always stayed across the road and right in town so dont realy get to see much so which would everyone recommend for a family weekend get away bearing in mind we wont have a car.
I know Wellington has the zoo and Te Papa and Auckland and the zoo and sky tower and rainbows end (although is that actually any good)... so what else is there to do with little ones that is easy to get to?

I reccomned Wellington because it's easy to walk around, great cafes, shops & the waterfront is great, Good Luck

The Wellington botanical gardens are lovely, you can take the cable car and get off and have a wander around. Frank Kits Park has an awesome playground.
If you are going to Akl Zoo, take the tram ride round Motat is something to include. A ferry ride over to Devonport and an ice cream on the waterfront.
I've played tourist in both cities and there's lots to do in both.

I think they both have their good points.
Auckland: Museum, Kelly Tarltons, Sky Tower, Butterfly Creek, Zoo, Motat, better weather
Wellington: Te Papa, Zoo (not a big or as good as Aucklands, but still pretty good), Cable Car, Botanical Gardens
Good point about it all being really accessible in Wellys though. If you don't have a car in Auckland it will be quite hard to get to everything as they are quite a distance from each other.

I'd do wellys over ak too. I've taken Daniel down to wellys quite a few times and he looooves it especially petone foreshore and going down the wharf especially when you can see schools of fish from standing on the wharf or watching what the people fishing are catching.

I vote for Wellington, too.
Mainly for the ease of access without a car.
AKL, while it has heaps of family fun, it's so sprawled out that it would almost be a chore to get anywhere.
Other than the things mentioned above, Wellington has a great rail system and a nice ferry ride over to Eastbourne, if it's a nice day.

Auckland has the explorer bus that takes you around all the attractions for a small cost - kelly tarltons, museum, zoo, all those.. they also have free buses up and down Queen St, which is the main CBD shopping area where the sky tower is near. I'd choose Auckland over wellington. Sure it's not as condensed, but once you get your bearings, you're fine!

I had totally forgotten about Kelly Tarltons, the kids would love that... but I am worried about the travelling around without a car. Hubby is in Auckland at the moment and said last night it took almost 2 hours to get as far as what would be a 20 minute drive here in chch because of traffic!!!
What is Butterfly Creek? Ive heard about it and presume it has something to do with butterflies?
Maybe I should look into hiring a car.

As Miss Angel said there is a tourist bus that's picks up and drops off at all the main destinations in town - Kelly Tarltons, the Museum, Zoo etc Akl traffic really depends on where you are going and at what time of the day. A rental car is useful if you don't mind driving in Akl traffic. My SIL is from Chch and she doesn't like it much.

Went to Butterfly creek a week or 2 back and LOVED it - it has a butterfly house, Crocs, a petting zoo with animals you can feed, a mini train etc - a big jungle gym area for the kids also - it is right by the Airport and has a super cool mini golf next door too

Oooh yeah, Butterfly Creek! I forgot about that.
Hmm...ok, maybe I'm changing my vote to AKL...
As much as that pains me, being a Welly girl
