I know that this should really be in the food and recipes, but I'm hoping I might get some quick answers in here....
We are making up a batch of homemade baby food (veges). We have kumara, pumpkin, carrot and potatoes. How do you make yours? Do you cook them separately and then combine them? Do you have different combinations that you use? We are kind of starting blind, we're planning to get some silverbeet tomorrow to add to it (forgot it in tonight's groceries). Are there any other combinations that you would recommend, with other veges?

Most people I know, including myself, did each vegetable seperately (as in pureed and froze them) then combined them when defrosting and feeding them to bubs. That way you can make any combination you feel like at the time. Also helps if bubs decides they don't like a particular combo as you don't have to make it up again!

You can freeze them in ice cube trays and then once frozen put them into snaplock freezer bag things. I did find thought that some veges/fruits were really hard to get out of my ice cube trays, so I ended up buying some very small plastic containers $2 for 6 I think and I still use them now for freezing portions of cheese sauce for DD etc.

I bought a set of avent breastmilk storage cups and lids and used them for purees - they were perfect, straight from freezer to microwave and you get 10 in a pack .

Some people just use ice cube trays but when bubs gets bigger I found the cups better as you can put more in them.
Oh, and a good tip if you're lazy/fruit is out of season, buy tinned fruit (non sweetened) on special and puree that, not as cheap as buying the fruit and stewing it yourself but not far off it if you buy tins for under $1.

I make and freeze seperatly. Freeze in ice cube trays and then put into a zip lock bag in the freezer.
I can then pull out what I want at the time.
I haven't started solids yet but have been on a pureeing/freezing frenzy in the last couple of weeks and now have bags of peaches, apples, pears, rhurbarb, kumara, pumpkin, avocado, chicken, parsnip, beef, lamb, brocolli and cauliflower, plums and apricots in the freezer.
I can now make any combo I like and can also add meat to it when needed.

Yep freeze in ice cube trays is what we did. Luckily I have lots of trays plus a couple of really goods ones from Tupperware that you can push the bottom up on to push out what is frozen - works a treat. Then I too just put them into snaplock bags - can write on them what is in them and what date.

When you put them into the zip lock bags, do the cubes stick together???
I have some apples which I am going to do soon, but they seem happier eating them in their muslin cloth. Will get some different fruits though!!
I have those Avent containers already, so they'll come in very handy!!

Kate, the best thing I ever did was buy some mini-muffin trays, the silicone ones. So when they begin eating more (like 6+ cubes a meal), it's easier just to freeze in bigger portions. You just make it, blend it (I bought a stick mixer for $13 from TWH) and then put it in the muffin trays. Because they're so bendy, they're really easy to get out I now do it with casseroles etc, just freeze Ava's portions in that and then put them in snaplock bags (and no, they generally don't stick together).

I will have a look at work today for the mini muffin tins!! I'm pretty sure we have them on special too.... At the moment we have them in the Avent storage containers (they are enough for 2 days of feeds). I will get some more fruits and stuff as well....it's so hard to know what to give them!!!

Just dug out a book I used. It says best first fruits are;
-apple, pear, banana (don't cook just mash)
First veges;
-carrot, potato, kumera, swede, parsnip, pumpkin, butternut
you can also combine baby rice with fruit and veges.
Like what others have said, freeze the veges/fruit separately, then you can make diff combinations when they're abit older. Probably best to stick with single foods until they get use to the different flavours. they tend to prefer sweeter foods like carrot & kumera i found

My mummy gave me a book that had all the info in the world on baby food making...I can have a look and see if there is anything ingenious in there.
Fruit:
Apple, avocado, banana, custard apple (what are they?), pear, rockmelon
Veges: broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, kumera, potato, pumpkin, spinach, pitty pan squash (huh?), zucchini.
The book then has a whole bunch of suggestions on combinations on mash like potato and pumpkin, carrot and broccoli, apple and avocado and recipes for other things like egg yolk custard.
Then the book carries on to other veges in the 8-12 month age group to introduce more texture and flavours. It also goes on to have 'normal' recipes for toddlers that to be honest sound like grown ups would like them too hehe.
It is pretty good really. It is a good old Womens Weekly book...reprinted by popular demand haha.
