Was reading some threads on trademe about how much people spend on their kids at easter and was wondering if that was a trademe thing, or everyone does it.
I spent $10 on the boys...both together. Would have spent more but they will get eggs from my mum, my nana, as well as my dad. And they got a bag of eggs this week from an aunt, and another mini eggs from another aunt. so for me a largish egg + a couple of small mini-eggs was enough.
ONline however, people have been talking about buying presents like clothes etc for "easter presents". have you heard of this? and do you do it?

Yip clothes and PJs.......my MIL buys PJs and a few clothes for the kids and one small egg, but i think this year she went a bit crazy with the egg side.........hey im not complaining cos my children get more clothes that i dont have to find the money for and would rather them get more clothes than choc
I do like the idea of buying a book at easter.......I think easter is another family time of the year and what better way than sitting down with a new book for your child and reading........and it feels like more of a treat than just buying a book randomly.
As for eggs, One carton of cadburys hollow eggs, 15 in a pack $7.50 those are for hiding around(for both boys) and one themed Egg.........this year my son is into hotwheels so has got a hotwheel egg for $10 i think it cost.....my eldest is 14 so he just gets a block of cadburys choc.........oh i did also get one packet of marshmallow eggs each too, so not much over $10 each really. didnt do a book this year cos i struggled to get the eggs already.
I dont think they should get toys for easter though

when i was a kid i once got a nail polish in with my eggs, but thats it. wont be giving mine easter presents. a couple of eggs will be enough.
from when i was about 12 (youngest bro wouldve been 7)... and because we arent religious, we would put easter off until the next weekend, and mum would give us a certain amount of allowance (i think was $5) to pick our own eggs when they went on sale in the week after easter. we thought it was great coz we got more than we would have and mum loved it coz it got us out of the house ove the holidays and kept us occupied while mum did some shopping.

When Esme is old enough to understand easter she'll probably get a 'present' instead of eggs due to intollerences. But if she was getting eggs she wouldn't get a present as well iykwim.
As a kid we got a large hollow egg (cabury cruchie/buttons etc) plus some little ones. Mum used to put the little ones out in a trail for us to follow to our big egg.

We always used to get our eggs after easter too... I'm sure that saved Mum heaps! When Bubs is big enough, we'll give him an egg or so, but no presents here.

I have got the girls an egg each - the small choc button eggs and we made some nests that were in the littlies mag last year (cornflakes, choc and mini eggs in them). http://www.littlies.co.nz/page.asp?id=1529&level=3 - chocolate nests
Both set of grandparents will probably give them some sort of egg too so we will be rationing chocolate for weeks .
We don't do presents - never heard of that before, but some one mentioned it on here the other day as when they gave the kids new winter PJs. I thought that was quite a good idea (I grew up in England so it was spring).

I have heard of kids getting new winter PJs for Easter, but we never did this.
We used to get one big egg and either the little caramel ones or some of the marshmallow eggs. - We'd get them from our grandparents too so there was a lot of chocolate.

i'm not a big easter fan but my mother used to buy the kids chocs so this year i have decided that i will do it every year... mum would be pleased...
i did explain to them this morning that there is no easter bunny though... and we discussed eggs and new life and gabriel told us what he knew about jesus and the cross and stuff - credit to his teacher cause he had it very accurate!
but there is no way they will get presents too!
when we were younger i remember getting an egg with a mug or an egg cup and they were almost better than the ones with choc buttons in them!

i have never gotten a present for easter, only eggs.
This year the "easter bunny" is bringing DD 1 hollow egg in her favorite colour pink. I'm going to put a ribbon around it if i can find one. She goes a little silly if she eats too much sugar so with that 1 and what she gets from other people i think it is more than enough. I also don't want her to get to expect alot of presents/eggs at times like this and xmas.

Thats great Deb, did you read jake's "version" of easter on my fb? to recap jesus is apparently a guy who turned into a giant, ate all the fish, died and came back as a zombie. Cheers school ! doing a great job! (in saying that, my description of xmas last year gave both kids nightmares, so I don't "explain" things anymore)

liz thats funny. yeah i was quite surprised gabriel knew so much as my explanations are a bit garbled. i tried to refrain from mentioning pagan rituals so i didnt confuse the issue too much!
i must say i do like jakes version of events!

We always got a small toy. Normally a book or a colouring in book/word search book etc with some felts. Something to keep us occupied and no doubt to give mum a bit of a sleep in whilst we ate chocolate. We never ever got toys during the year for no reason etc so it was nice to get something at easter. (My kids ask for something everytime we go out which is a habit I need to break) One year my brother got one of those parachute men which are really cheap and kept him busy for ages. So not expensive gifts just enough to make us have a special day.
In the past my kids have had easter baskets which usually had an egg, a rabbit and a toy wrapped up but that was when we lived in the states. This year I have an egg each and will go to the $2 shop to get a little toy to go with it.

Growing up 'Easter Bunny' would bring us a big egg and a few little ones, usually themed to our age / what we were into - no toys. However last year DS was 7/8mths so we got him one of those activity table thingies, was going to get one anyhow so just called it an Easter present! He was too young for it to be an issue.
This year I've swipped the cardboard basket from an egg DH has been scoffing and filled with with cotton wool and those fluffy yellow chicks and he's got one egg to sit in the middle... actually its less of an egg and more of a milky bar cow LOL he must have slung it in the shopping trolley one day cos I unpacked it when I got home and was like Ummmm Where Did THIS come from ha ha ha. And I have brought him some books, but again I was going to get them anyway (desperate for new bedtime story material!) so figured I'd add them in as an Easter thing. I quite like the idea of shifting the focus off the chocolate so might keep up the small egg plus book tradition.
Here in the UK kids get new PJ's for Xmas, usually in their Xmas Eve hamper which was a totally new concept for me!! Xmas Eve hampers usually have a Xmassy DVD, story, mug and hot choccie, edible treat and new slippers / pjs.
Its never-ending these 'new' traditions!!

Every year since DD was born shes got a ceramic egg cup with a chocolate egg in it. Now that she is older she also gets a larger hollow egg with buttons or similar in it. We will be doing the egg cup thing for DS now too.

I think presents are silly... easter eggs.... kinda understandable... but presents?!?
We just brought a box of 15 eggs to hid around the house tomorrow, and then I got the girls a wee bunny each. My mum got us a few too (although do the girls really need to know about them...?? ) The eggs she got for the girls came with a soft toy although now I am wondering what on earth to do with them... they have far far to many soft toys that just end up sitting in the bottom of their toy box.

we would sometimes get an egg in a mug or a little toy but it would always come with the egg. we had a freind that would get a book (in an easter basket) but only because her parents didnt like her having chocolate
Kids are going to grow up thinking that they get presents for everything! when we were kids (and im not that old!) we only got presents at birthdays and xmas
