Hi Girls

Im due on 16th April and have another midwife appointment this Thursday and then one after on the 15th, Now when i was 37 weeks she discussed a stretch & sweep with me, but she has now decided that on the 15th if i haven't had any signs that baby might be coming (haven't had any yet ) that she will do a stretch and sweep on me then, if i consent to it. Now ive never had one of these before let alone any one else looking down there

I go to her house for my appointments and just wondering if anyone could share their experiences of these with me, im a little worried about how uncomfortable it will be, i know it wont be anything compared to birth, but ill be in pain then and wont care about people down there im guessing

This would be much appreciated

I was the same as you when I had my first one done. I was so embaressed about it lol, Id never had any kind of internals done before.
But it really wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, uncomfy and a little sore, but for some people its not sore at all! I was crampy and stuff afterwards, bit for me it didnt help bring labour on at all, I went to 42 weeks with my son and 9 days over with my daughter.

Good Luck

I never had one but don't worry about being embarassed. You aren't the first person she has seen and you won't be the first one who has been embarassed about it.

I've had that many medical prof's look between my legs that I just don't care anymore but the first time, yup I was embarassed! Its normal.

I was embarrassed first time around, but DH was more than me as someone was shoving their hand up my vjayjay!

I find them sore but I have a tilted uterus so that may be why. For my first child, I wasn't ready to go into labour (cervix too closed) so it didn't help, but with my 2nd it definitely did and I went into labour 12 hours after (but had contractions right from the S&S and lost my plug a few hours after too).

I've had one too, and I didn't find it painful at all. I had been in labour for 31 hours and it help me to go from being 3cms dilated to 6cms. I was 8 days over at the time. Also, at that stage I was over being pregnant and just wanted DS to come out, so it didn't embarass me.
I personally think it won't help unless your bub is ready to be born.
Best of luck though

I had my first one done last Thurs (never needed to have one for my first pregnancy) and it wasn't anyone near as painful or uncomfortable as I thought it would be. I didn't find it that embrassing either- I was (am) just over being pregnant. I was 3cm dilated when I went in and she managed to stretch me to 4cm and could feel the top of his head. She was pretty positive about it and thought there was a high chance I would go into labour within 24-48 hrs......but here I still am.

Afterwards I had my 'show' and on the CTG it showed I was having regular contractions and I felt quite crampy for the whole afternoon and during the night.

If you don't feel comfortable having one at 40 weeks, you could always ask her to wait another week.
