Currently we have a capsule and a from newborn carseat. Kiara is in a capsule and henry in the carseat.
Now the problem is that kiara has another 2cm before she is too tall for the capsule so we were planning on moving her into the carseat and getting henry a new one. As the money smart thing to do seems to be to get a harnessed booster for him so that it will last him.
Here's the problem - where do we start? We have been to babycity and babyfactory, and the carseat there dont look that great, especially the harnesses and the buckle parts. Where else do we buy carseats?
Things we would like in a booster seat:
- Good price -under $250 (at the most)
- buckle that can be clicked in one side at a time, not together.
- harnessed booster and then non harnessed booster, so that it will last a while yet
- we would prefer one that doesnt need a anchor bold as we would like it to be relatively movable between a few different cars.
- we have a voucher for baby city for $140 so it would be great if we could buy it there but not essential.
Any help would be much appreciated. We dont have much money but would obviously like our children to be safe. Thanks!!!!!

We have a supernanny 3n1 from babies.co.nz and its awesome, it lasts until they are 6 I think. Its a booster and then the head rest goes up quite tall and then later on you can take the whole back part off and just have the bottom booster part to sit on (does that make sense? lol) and that was under 200

Kebakat - can you clip the two sides of the harness in separately? Does that make sense?

Not usually, its made so you clip them in together, it was a PITA to begin with but I'm use to that now. But I have found you can clip one side in kinda sneakily and depending how you place it it stays and then can clip the other. I dunno if that makes sense at all

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the link. Had a look but couldn't find anywhere that said how wide it is. I should have said in original post that we would like it to fit in the back with the carseat and capsule so that when/if we have a 3rd (i know thinking ahead lol) they will all fit.
edited to add: we have a opel omega which is as wide as holden comadores so it is definitely possible to have 3 back there lol

have a look at http://www.babysafe.co.nz - Babysafe they have a good range of seats plus if you ring them they are very helpful :) I know you aren't near them but they will be able to give you some advise.
I'd also have a look here http://www.babyonthemove.co.nz - baby on the move as they also have a good range, plus they are nation wide.
Good luck, we are just about to buy a car seat for DD as the capsule is due back at the end of the month.

I'd just ask them, they are really friendly there. Its not very wide and doesn't have an anchor strap which I totally LOVE. I love it being able to go in any car

These are great websites. Seeing I'm all new to this I got a bit of a silly questions:
Some of the seats I looked at are from newborn till 18kg - what age does 18kg translate to? I really have no idea
I like the idea of just having one seat that you can use all along. Are there any negative points to it?
Why do people use capsules? From what I hear baby outgrows them reasonable fast and they are akward and heavy to carry? I really have no idea...sorry.

sussyl - i personally wouldn't bother with a capsule again. We didnt have one for henry but i bought one for our second thinking it would be great but what a PAIN!!! I have only carried her in it once!!! Next time will be going with a newborn up carseat. I haven't found any negatives to them at all. BTW Cosco Scenera is the one we use and we are very happy with it.
Anyway we have decided what we are going to do. We are going to buy another Cosco Scenera for kiara as that way henry can keep rear facing. And i think henry has quite a few years left in his before he reaches the limits of it.

Capsules are individual taste....I personally loved the capsules, because it meant that if the girls were asleep in the car we could unclip them from the base and just bring them inside without disturbing them. Sometimes it meant that extra 20-30 minutes of sleep for them which was needed by all of us. It's a PITA with them in the carseats now, not being able to bring them inside without disturbing them if they're asleep. It was a pretty big thing for me. I will probably get a capsule for next time as well.

I didn't like a capsule either. I don't like leaving bubs sleeping in them cause their airways get squashed.
18kg depends on the child though. Daniel at nearly 3 is only about 14kg but hes a lean kid whereas some chunky younger toddlers would easily be that.

Susyl 18kg would be, perhaps, 3 years old depending on child and weight etc.
I am a capsule user and love it. It seems you either love or hate them. The one we have has a base and tether strap and can be used to 12kg. Jackson is almost 8 months and still in it comfortably and will be until just after 12 months old I suspect (weight dependent, he's approx 8kg at the moment).
I loved the convenience of just unclipping it from the base and taking him around without disturbing him if he was sleeping. Yes he is getting heavy in it now but I can still carry him in it for very short stints i.e. car to supermarket and trolley if he is asleep. The tether strap can be a pain to maneuver him around getting him in and out but thankfully it is adjustable so that makes life easier.
There is a new linky here http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=32820 - about carseat safety .
ETA I agree with Stacey, babies should not be left in them for long periods as its not good for them. And I dont like the prams that have the travel systems you clip them into.
