DS has just started day care. Two days so far. They're 'supposed' to stick to the routine(ish) that I lay out, but unsurprisingly he isn't sleeping well there. They say it takes a bit for them to get used to the environment.
Anyhow, once we get home I've got a very tired but very active baby. Do I feed him and put him to bed early? I'm worried that will mean morning will creep earlier and earlier. He's already getting up too early for me. Do I continue with our 'normal' evening timings and just accept he'll be a bit more scratchy? ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Personally I would continue as normal just for a week and see how it goes. He will hopefully start sleeping at DC once he's used to it and realises sleeping in a new place is not so bad  -------------

Going to bed early should be fine. When they go to bed doesn't actually affect when they wake up, especially if they haven't slept well during the day.
It took Nathan one week to get used to his new room and new cot - a whole week of no day sleeps, so I'd imagine daycare will be similar. Try and give them as many familiar things as possible, eg. his blankets/sheet/toys... things that smell like you/him. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

ty started 2 days when he was 2 and yip the first month is a cow....he has been going a year but man he does so much that he is angry when he gets home....i give him dinner asap put him on the couch with a blanket and bottle and a movie until bed time ...........if i put him to bed early he wakes all night..........
he has changed daycares too as the first one didnt listen to me about his sleeping....ty woke and instead of reassuring him so he would go back to sleep they just got him up .....so may pay if the sloeeping doesnt improve in a few weeks to keep annoying them until they do something ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Then he just got this pathetic tired thing going on, so quickly feed him and into bed. He was asleep before I got tided up from the nappy change.

When DS1 first started daycare there was no chance of keeping him to his normal bedtime he was that exhausted. He never once woke earlier because of it and in his case he actually started sleeping right through the night. He was 4 months when he started going to daycare. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yeah i agree - put them to bed early - when my daughter started she would crash out on me asleep when i picked her up and then still go to bed early - she would basically sleep from 4.30 onwards with a quick wake up for dinner - she came right in a few weeks

DS started daycare the beginning of March for 3 days a week and is now full time. The 1st few days she didn't sleep well and was cranky but then I realised I hadn't taken her little cloth doll she likes to fling around her cot and rub on her face when she goes to sleep. Once she had that with her at DC she was heaps better. Some days she is tired when I pick her up so I just put her to sleep a little earlier and she hasn't woken up any earlier.....yet.

My little guy never slept at daycare..ever:( and they did try very very hard.. so sometimes it just takes a long time..because i wasnt working i could just be rung to take him home and we did mornings instead which obviously cant always be done..so i would just stick to your routine but put him to bed a little early and re assess after a week or so. I agree with the poster after me as well(i used to be in ece too) ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

i wonder if daycare is not getting him to bed on time. I take it they are following your routine?
I am in ece and 9/10 babies do something different there, we had a child start on tues who at home goes down at 10:30am but he was showing tired signs at 9:30am, so into bed he went. So are they actually going by his cues or just his home routine?? might pay to ask as this could be why he is taking so long to go to sleep and not sleeping long |

| Thats a good point - my girl is now on a pretty regular time table for sleeps at DC (of her own design) but at home she always has her first sleep much much earlier and often has an extra one at home even though she sleeps great at DC |

I'll talk to them more next week. I think his tired signs are quite subtle. But they deal with babies all the time so surely they can see it? At home he goes down about the same time as i'm dropping him off, but it's a new environment so instead of winding down for a sleep he's winding up.

Hi..this is exactly the same as my wee guy. He started 2 consecutive days at DC in Feb (aged 10.5 months), and still doesnt sleep great there...though in saying that he did on tues, but that has been the first time! Mind you, he is a terrible day sleeper at home too, so i'm not expecting much. I think there is so much going on at DC that they dont want to miss out, plus its probably much noisier than at home.
I tend to stick to our normal nighttime routine, but probably couldnt get him down any earlier anyway due to the time I get home with him. I find that 9 times out of 10 he goes down without a peep on his DC days and is out like a light! Good luck! |
