Is there any benefit to seeing an Obgyn when planning a VBAC?
My midwife has asked if I want to but if all they are going to do is talk me through the risks then it sounds like its unnecessary. I know the risks and I dont want to end up with any scaremongering. Let me know what you did and if it helped? I'll most likely be birthing at N.Shore hospital. Is there a VBAC section on the forum for my other VBAC questions? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have seen 2 of the NSH consultants re a VBAC. The first one (just before I was 34wks) was pushing pretty heavily towards a c-sect. I saw another one yesterday after a scan showed baby to be VERY big already and she was lovely and really quite reassuring about it all. She did go over the risks and in my case especially, the risks with trialling a VBAC with a large baby but in my mind it was nice to know because now I'll know the exact reasons why and when they'll want me to opt out and go for a c-sect.
I think it would all depend on why you had a c-sect last time as to what they'd say though. I've been booked in for another scan and hospital appointment to review at 40wks. After that I think they'll push more heavily to book in a c-sect but I'm glad to have had the chance to ask my questions and I feel a bit more prepared about what's likely to happen. I think it totally depends on who you see though. The last female one I saw was really lovely and not pushy at all. -------------

Freesia I take it there's no choice as to who you see?
My previous c-sec was due to breech presentation. I could sit through a fair amount of the stats and the like but my partner would likely have a meltdown  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I was just given appointment times and got whoever but you may be able to ask to see someone specific. If you're pretty set on a VBAC, everything is going fine so far and you've had a good talk with your mw then you may not need it. I was kind of under the impression that it's just something you HAD to do after a previous c-sect. -------------

If it's due to Breech presentation and I'm assuming an elective, then there's every chance they'll be more than happy for you to trial VBAC.
My first was a breech presentation C and my MW told me that NSH would probably push for me to do a trial labour. So I doubt that you will have a fight on your hands. -------------

My big issue is that they will push hospital protocol... which is for me to go to hospital from first regular contractions, be on constant monitoring, no water for pain relief (let alone a water birth)... and DH will buy into it. Its not optimal for a successful VBAC.
I'll speak to the midwife again, if she thinks I should go then I may just schedule it for when DH is on a shift he cant get out of. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Midwives have to refer you if you have had a previous c/s. I went to see the OB for my first VBAC as i was birthing at the hospital. I went in there with all the information i had researched over my pregnancy and if i had any negitive comments i would have fought. I was very lucky as i got a young OB who was amazing, he listened and said that i was a good canditate for a VBAC but to watch size of the bubba. He was actually the OB on call when i had my DD and he saved me from having another c/s by waiting and not rushing me into the theate when labour stalled for 6hrs, also my DD was 1lb bigger than my c/s bubba so she was a lot bigger! For my next 2 births after i got the date to go see the OB and i just rang them up and cancelled, i didnt see any point in seeing them as i had been there done that and i was birthing at home. I will be ringing up and cancelling my appointment again with this bubba. ------------- DD 9 ~ DD 8 ~ DS 7 ~ DS 5 ~ DS 2 ~ DS 14mths ~ DD 3mths |

Azza if you don't want to see an OB then just don't  I saw an OB but I only saw one in particular as the other OB in the area at the time was very keen to see me have a c-section so I told my midwife I did not want to see that particular OB again which was fine.
You don't HAVE to do as they recommend and if you feel it won't be helpful for you to follow the hospital protocols then just don't. With my VBA2Cs being a home waterbirth it was as far away from hospital protocols as you can get pretty much LOL ------------- Mum to Alex (11), Blaire (10) & Erika (8) and Damien (6) Successful HWB VBA2Cs! Neither of the ones I saw actually gave me time limits or restrictions on what I can do in labour and because it'll be your mw with you once you're in labour, as long as she's cool with the intermittant monitoring and a water birth then you shouldn't have a problem.
We're just trying to be prepared to have to push to get our way once we're actually at the hospital and in labour when they might start pushing for a c-sect earlier than what we'd like. Is your mw quite happy with a water birth and everything? -------------

My midwife is a home birth midwife and she's comfortable with me using water as pain relief (or for birth). She says they have monitoring equipment that works in water. She's very supportive and not pushy. We live about 3km's from the hospital so even if anything did go pear-shaped we'd be there super quick. I'm still mulling it over and will let my midwife know in 4 weeks. I think I will end up having the appointment but going without DH. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Azza, I'm in your position with VBAC. The ob did tell me that they suppport me with VBAC this time round but that they would want me into hospital as soon as labour sarts to be monitored. I spoke to mw about this as I really don't want it or feel it will be helpful for a successful VBAC and she said she will monitor me at home and we will go in only when neccessary. Obviously if it becomes neccessary for me to go in earlier then I will. I've booked a birthing pool to use at home and home to labour most of my time at home (I don't want a home birth though). ------------- http://lilypie.com">
