For anyone who has used a birthing pool/bath at the hospitals or at home for that matter,

If you needed to go to the toilet, did you get out of the pool and go to the toilet or did you just go in the pool (#1's that is)?

I hopefully will get to use one when the time comes but aren't too sure what the go is regarding this. I don't want to seem gross but what do you do?

I tried to pee in the bath when I was labouring but couldnt- the midwives wanted me to pee so I had to get out and go to the loo which was not comfortable!! After the birth the hospital midwife told me to pee in the shower so it wouldnt be as sore!

I got out of the pool to pee, never thought to ask the mw about it just assumed it probably wasn't a good idea plus my mw said it would be good to get up and walk around a bit (she had me walk round the hospital grounds a couple of time!)

BTW You don't sound gross!!

Urine's sterile isn't it, so probably no reason not to.

For me, it would be more the peeing while someone's watching that made it tricky!

My MW made me get out of the pool to wee...... i think mainly coz the walking round helped move things along a bit.

I wasn't in labour long enough to need another wee! LOL I had one when I got woken out of a dead sleep by a contraction and he was born less than 2 hours after that, in fact we barely got the pool filled in time.

Apparently urine is only sterile until it passes into the urethra where it can pick up nasties, but is somehow similar to amniotic fluid so......................................

I think that's a question for the midwife/LMC. LOL I'd probably choose to get out myself, but that's just who I am.

I spent all night getting out of the giant hospital birthing pool to pee, it got very tedious.
The next day when I was in the big bath my mw said I am welcome to pee in it. I think if someone had specifically said I can pee in the birthing pool I would have. Climbing out and back in was such a mission!
Isn't baby floating around in (and 'breathing'/swallowing) some of its own urine anyway?

Yeah my husband thought the idea of the birthing pool was silly if I had to get out each time I needed to pee. Its not him though that is giving birth but I get were he's coming from. I spent a lot of time last birth going to the toilet but I had retained a lot of fluid last pregnancy.

I didn't need to pee while in the pool, so i'm not sure but might be best to double check with your MW

Amby, I can imagine it being a complete PITA!

I didn't feel the need to pee but I was concentrating on other things so to be honest I'm not sure if I did or not LOL. I sat on the toilet before getting in the pool & emptied out anyway then from there I was only in labour for about 4 hours

I asked my MW this question and she said its fine to pee in the pool if you want to.  Some women prefer to stand up in the pool and hold a bowl/container under them to pee into, rather than clambouring out and walking to the toilet.  Sounds like a sensible plan to me .

With DS I laboured in water and found that I didn't have the urge to pee while in the pool, but when I got out and sat on the toilet was surprised how full my bladder actually was.

I laboured and birthed DD in water, but was only in the pool for 2 hrs before she was born and like toniellis I'd emptied out prior and didn't need to go during that short time .
