          | I soooo love my midwife, and guess what? she has been nominated in the Little Treasures magazines star midwives competition. Her name is Gwen Costello, and she is fabbo. I originally had another midwife, a bit of a hippy, who I didn't choose, but got landed with. She never rang me until about 3 weeks after I booked in to make an appointment, so I was almost 13 weeks before I even saw her, wouldn't order me a scan, as I was 13 weeks. Told me to toughen up over mt M/S, and also that she didn't appriciate 10pm calls because baby was crying, because "babies cry". Didn't beleive in pain relief or any feeding other than breast. After this shocking first visit, she booked me in to see her 6 weeks later (!!) and went overseas on holiday and didn't change my appointment. So here I am, sitting in the waiting room, 2 weeks after my best friend has a still born baby, waiting to be seen by someone, who had bloody well gone overseas!!! Later that day, I rang the clinic and asked to change midwives, put in a complaint, and asked if I was able to have Gwen, who had been my friend who's daughter was stillborn's midwife. She rang me almost immediately, and so started a wonderful relationship. My mother lives over 300km away, and I have no family near by, so Gwen has been a fantastic support. At no time have I ever felt like I was being stupid ot trivial for asking something basic. She was especailly understanding about my fear that something would happen to my baby as well, so she really looked afte me and reassured me all the way that we would do the best we could to have a healthy, live baby. At 35 weeks, I was going up to the hospital sometimes 3 times a week, to go on the foetal heart moniter for half an hour or so, to hear that reassuring heart beat. My friend came to many appointments with me, and often, her, Gwen and myself would sit, tearfully listening to my babys strong heartbeat. She was a wonderful support during and for a long time after the birth of Jacob, well above and beyone the call of duty.
No one (apart from rod and I ) was happier for us than she when I rang her to be telling her I would need her services again.
So, if you are voting, and you don't know any of the other midwives, spare a vote for this wonderful wonderful lady, who sadly was never blessed with children of her own, but is now delivering babies of some of the babies she delivered long ago.

          | I initially read the article to make sure that my midwife from when I had Andrew wasn't there! I've got a GP as my LMC this time around.

          | It was kind of depressing though, the number that had been nominated from supporting women through stillbirths, miscarriages etc...This is around the time in pregnancy when I start to notice all of the sad stories and get upset about it. Nick had to turn the channel over from the news the other day when I started yelling at the television - well, at the Israeli air force about the little kiddies killed in the basement by the air strike. Anyway, back to midwives - great to see that there are some really good ones out there!
