My son is 3 months old now and I really need to get off my butt and lose some weight!!!  I put on 20kg with my first pregnancy and lost all but 5kgs when I got pregnant the second time.  I think I put on around 15 kgs this time around.  My weight when I got pregnant the first time was 68kg, I think I am sitting around 76 now, dont have any scales so cant check for sure lol.  Is it realistic to expect to get back to your pre preg weight??  I am thinking of doing jenny craig or weight watchers, something along those lines so I wont get lazy half way through!!  Is anyone else on a weight loss mission???

I know I will be!! Weight Watchers have a programme for breast feeding mothers so I'll be keen to hook onto that and of course plenty of walking!

I'm on weight watchers now- the online version and it is going well-ish. I found my own foibles, and have managed to get some ways to combat those, but don't know if the programme is actually working, or if I just have more motivation. would definiteily recommend getting some scales though. My scales say I've lost 8kg, but I don't feel like I have. they help my motivation though.

I started my first pregnancy at 68kgs...I'm not even going to mention where I am up to now, but it's getting close to double that. I've already told hubby that I'll be doing weight watchers (in person) once this bubs is out. I'm planning on starting up at around the six week check time on their lactation plan. I've looked at online, but I don't have the motivation to stick with it. At least with the meetings I'll have to front up and face the music/scales.

ooohhh this is something I have tried not to think of...but it is in the back of my mind, I have no idea how I am going to lose this weight since I am the worst most compulsive and emotional eater ever!i think so far i have put on around 15k...and there is more to go...
I was thinking of doign WW, but not sure when would be a realistic time to start that - a couple of weeks after baby is born maybe?

I'm going to go for the online option only because I know I can do it by myself...I once borrowed all my friends books and taught myself everything and lost close on 3 dress sizes!

I'd like to do meetings but cost is a factor too.

Does anyone know how much of the weight u put on during pregnancy u are likely to loose after the birth and while breastfeeding,..with normal excercise and healthy(ish) eating,..without having to "diet"?
Like, is it not possible to go back to normal without having to diet?

Posted By: My3Sons
Date Posted: 02 August 2006 at 2:41pm

Thanks for all your replies, nice to know there are others in the same boat!

Kellz I lost weight straight after having both my boys(probably because I was too tired to remember to eat lol) but then put it back on again.  I guess your whole body has changed and I found it really hard to lose the weight around my middle.  I havent been successful at BF though but I am sure that will help you with the weight loss.

I also think I would be too lazy to do the online WW but actually getting organised and getting to the meetings......lol sounds like more excuses! James well done you are on your way! And Lizzle 8kgs that is a great loss!!

Perhaps we need an online weight loss support part to our forum?

Somewhere to encourage each other, exchange tips and recipes etc....

Good idea Paws - we could also have a virtual weigh in every week! That way we would be named and shamed (well sort of) and we have to account for how we did that week without having to pay for the meetings - good motivation to stick to it even when we dont feel like doing it... and we can also share information, recipes, tips etc...

I so second WW. I used my mums books leading up to my wedding and the 6 weeks before I got married I lost about 10kgs. I am so going to be using the books again affter I have this monster. I will have the pregnancy weight plus about 20 odd kgs to lose.

i was going to ww before i got preggers as i wanted to loose abit before i got pregnant again....hehe that didn't work out!
anyway, i cannot recommend ww enough! i've done it a few times as my weight goes up very easily if i don't watch out. the most i lost was 13kgs. you really do need to go to the meetings though i've found as mentally, you feel stink if you havn't lost at the weigh in.
if you can't afford the weekly meetings though, maybe get the books (trademe?) and do it with a friend. competition is always a great motivator!!

to tone up your tummy i highly recommend pilates! you can get the dvd's off trademe for a good price. it really does work to flatten the belly and shrink bums and thighs hehe i sound like an infomercial!
i will be doing both once this bubs is out

I've got the books around here somewhere, went to WW myself once upon a time before I was pregnant, might even dig them out at some stage ! I'm pretty happy with my weight loss at the moment, although it's something I'm trying not to think a lot about right now. I think I was about 74/75kgs (and again trying to lose weight at the gym etc) when I found out, and went up to probably a little over 90kgs - and am presently sitting at 78kgs. Ultimately I'd like to lose another 10kgs and crack that 70kg mark, and reassess things from there. I think the idea of a support group / forum / thread on here would be great too.

Oh bugger I saw my ww book somewhere the other day but yeah I think its like 20 0r 22 points your allowed.
I would be in on a weight loss support thread thing. We could have a regular day for weigh ins and give each other ideas and support. I need to lose about 26kgs at least, could easily afford to lse 36kgs but I think 26 is more realistic. At the moment Im weighing in myself on Friday mornings and have lost 12kgs since the week I had Addison (that included babies weight aswell though) I have done ww and it does work but I was paying to just weigh in cos I couldnt stay for meetings cos I would have Kobe with me.

I'M IN!! As soon as this baby pops out I am, on a serious mission...

Baby due in Oct then in Feb we are going to SEVEN weddings and at two of the weddings will be my ex and his fiance... They are both lovely people and I am looking forward to seeing them again (they live isAust) but I DESPERATELY want to be skinnier (and prettier) than her and if possible I would like my engagement ring to be bigger than hers... I know, shameful. (please note i could never say this out loud only to the ohbaby-ers)

Anna, I do say something similar to Nat whenever we are going to be in the same town as his ex (which happens to be where his parents live, but anyway...)

I know that it wasn't until we married that she stopped hoping she'd win him back... and then she got married herself on our 2nd anniversary... I took great pleasure last month in seeing that while I've gained a little weight it's obviously all baby whereas she's just gained weight.

Kellz... Just wanted to reassure you that it is possible to get back to pre-baby weight!!!
Everyone always told me that you lose heaps of weight through breastfeeding... I maintain that you lose the most when you have a toddler and are preparing 5+ meals a day! You find yourself eating leftovers off little people's plates and by the time you get to your meal times you can't be bothered preparing anything!!!
I think I was at my scrawniest (in about 5 years) a couple of months ago. Since then I have gone on the injection and have uhhhmmmm padded out a little.

Well Emma said she is going to pass it along to Angie and see if it is possible...I suggested it could even be a general health and nutrion forum so for before, during and after pregnancy....it would be great if it could be done!

I really like the idea of a support group too for those not going to meeting etc but going it alone!

that nutrition thing is a really good idea, cause I know I'm guilty of only drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, after running around feeding each kidlet, getting dressed, me getting dressed, etc, I forget to eat! So then later need to make up for it, with biscuits!
Shall we have a weigh-in? - voluntarily of course. I was thinking Monday...cause it's the start of the week.

OK... I was going to suggest doing fridays because then we don't need to be so careful over the weekends and can work "it" off before the next weigh in???

Then we can make a table or chart/list whatever and put in our weigh ins every friday (or monday or whatever)...

until something formal is done we could do a chart like we have the 'where are you from' thread and each week add our new weight and how much we have lost or gained. Fridays are a good idea then if we are naughty over the weekend we dont have to feel bad and have a week to redeem ourselves.

my downfall is making jake's dinner...and "testing" the food to make sure it's not too hot. Now, imake a cup of tea and sip that to stop the snacking. I'm 71kg. Want to go down 10kg...maybe. definitely down to 65, maybe 60. we'll see when I get there. Fridays are fine by me...hey today is friday.

OK I'm in too. Fridays sound good starting next week cos I need to go buy scales too! I think I only have about 5 kg to lose. I have set myself up with a home exercise programme using a swiss ball and weights, plus trying to walk on fine days with the pram - maybe will walk to town and buy scales when Han wakes up

Oh and I've worked out how to stop craving chocolate! I cant eat it now cos if I do Hannah gets a rash and I feel bad - that is the only motivation that works for me. And now I dont even crave it anymore cos its been so long.

I'll have to go get some scales too!!

A question for Lizzle (I think it was you doing the online WW?).  Just had a look at the website, said it was 3 payments of $99 for the premium online package with all the books and points books etc.  Is it worth it do you think??  I think I should probably go to meetings to be accountable to someone but I'm sure with a little one in the house it will be hard to actually get there!!  To anyone else that has done WW, is there just a weekly meeting cost on top of the cost of all the books etc??  And does anyone know anyhting about their new new points programme??  Thanks!!

You don't have to buy the books but there is a weekly meeting cost and a membership fee. They often have special offers where you don't have to pay the membership fee though.

I don't know anything about the new points programme but WW is FANTASTIC!! Thanks to them I lost over 20kg!

I know a bit about the new one, basically you eat 3 meals a day, and you don't have to weigh the food at all. The idea is that you stop eating when you have had enough, not when you are really full. There is a list of foods that you are aloud to eat and then you can have 21 points that you use through the week. Snacks were fruit.

I would have to fish out the stuff on the other plan (which is no count) but my daily menu went something like this:
Breakfast Special K with yoghurt
Lunch ham and salad sandwich
Dinner grilled meat with veges

No points were used in this, as I saved them for treats in the weekend

Ok next friday it is, have to mentally prepare myself hehe.
I think WW is great but I found it a waste of money because I couldnt stay for the meetings with Kobe cos he would drive everyone crazy and i couldnt sit and really listen to what was happening.
A couple of ww tips Ive learnt are things like dont buy toast bread, by sandwhich even for toast as its less points. For lunch I used to have egg toasted sandwhiches and then take out the yolk becuase egg white is no points but egg with the yolk is 1 point(I hate the yolk anyway makes me gag) and remember to buy everything light, diet, trim etc. At the supermarket you can buy a box of 8 packs of wee peanuts or peanuts and raisins for about $3.50 and they are the perfect snack size. Another thing I remember from WW is 10 rice crackers is 1 point and salsa is nothing so there is a yummy snack for next to no points

Ooh, my tricks - whipped cream is less points than loose (more air!)
cream cheese is better than (most) marges.
KFC potatoes and gravy is remarkably low points.
Cloeslaw has lots of sugar in it.

oh a yummy treat is to get either gingernuts (the smaller ones that some brand make)or hundreds and thousand biscuits and put some of the cream in a can on top cos that is really low points but makes you feel like you are being naughty. I think for a small KFC potatoes and gravy it was only about 1.5 or 2 points aye and its sooo yummy.

naked. that way it's not clothes that you are weighing. I'm thinking of gettin a new set of scales. Lew weighed himself, and an hour later he was 5kg heavier. seems a bit suss to me. Also, I weighed on monday - 76kg, then every other day was 71. so may have to geta new lot. til then, i will take the lighter weight! hehe.

how is everyone's "day one" going? I am planning on being very domestic and making some toasted muesli later for my breakfasts. it is easy and cheap. emphasis on cheap. Got a pedometre the other day and was shocked that I only take 5250steps. I would've thought it would be more with monster one and two. Must go out and have a game of soccer. jake is dancing now I should join in. nah.
well, better go. we are off for an oil change.
good luck and willpower ladies!

My tips that I found are:
* use spray oil rather than normal oils
* dont even bring tempting food into the house - its much easier to just not have it than to ration it over a few days
* drink lots of water

I bought some scales from the Warehouse yesterday for $9.23! I tried it on the carpet and it said I was 79kg, just about had a fit. But on the wooden floor it was 74. But, I am going to go by my naked morning weight of 72kg!

my tips (not that I can diet at the moment)
Chupa chups are only 1 point and good for a sugar fix and last ages (if you don't chew!)
Merainges are only half a point each and feel like a treat, you can crush them and put them into diet yoghurt.
Snack pack lights are also good for this, and from memory 1.5 points each.
Grated cheese goes much further than sliced

I am on my third child, with my 1st i put on around 26 kgs,far too much weight, the day i got back from the hospital i started walking,i lost the whole lot, after my 2nd i only put on 13 kgs as was working right up i lost the whole lot also just walking a couple of kms a day,ive put on 10 kgs already and im only 6 1/2 months,i put on weight in between babies and went to weight watchers,it worked but the minute you stop it, i put the whole lot back on,so i started walking again,to lose the rest,so just goes to show,no matter how you lose the weight it will only work when you want it too,you dont need to waste $17 a week when you can do it all by yourself.

I stocked up on the WW meals when they were on sale...but they are so small - like an entree. I eat that and then snack on other food - I end up eating more than if I had just had a normal dinner.

My portions have always been huge. I now dish my own food and make it a small portion so I can go back for seconds (but make sure that the combined was less than I previously would have eaten). That is going well. I just need to stop buying ice cream now!

WW ice cream is good! I like the caramel swirl one, and if you buy the tubs it portion controls it for you.

As for the meetings, I actually found them really good and motivating, I found I wasn't honest if I didn't go but that is just me, others have more willpower than me

With the WW meals, I actually found the dolmio ones nicer and often more fulling. It helps though if you top them up with a salad or steamed veges

Hey ladies, Ive set up a basic start off under general topics. If anyone can make it look prettier please feel free, Im not to flash with this sort of thing. I figured we could cut and paste it or whatever. Not sure how to make it stay up the top though so we can find it easier. Add your name if your keen to be in!

With the WW meetings, I went until I had all the booklets LOL But I also ended up not going back because I shifted house and there wasn't a meeting place near enough to make it easy to attend. Have found it easy enough before to just re-use the booklets on my own, that's what I was doing just before I found out I was pregnant. As for the meals, I did what Sarah Beth did for a while (when I could afford to buy the frozen ones all the time) and 'topped up' with salad or something similar.

I used to really struggle with portion sizes in general, but now I think I'll do ok, and so it'll probably be a matter of watching the 'contents' of my diet.

Please nobody take this the wrong way, but you shouldnt be doing too much more than walking for at least the first six weeks. And same goes for dieting, esp if you are breastfeeding cos you need the extra calories.

Good luck everyone

For anyone that has a prob with craving choc,...a tip I heard somewhere ( maybe from the "evil diet witch" on TV!) was to have a low fat choc yogurt or choc milk to get the flavour ,..but not as "bad"!
We have discovered the flavour straws that u have with a glass of milk,..and the little balls in the straw mix and flavour the milk as u drink,..only 1/2 teaspoon sugar per straw! Yum!

I was thinking about the list of peoples weights,...do u think maybe u should also include heights or maybe just the ammount u wanna loose,..and the lose (or not) each week,....was just thinking that the healthy weight will vary a lot between people depending on height/frame etc,..and some people will be aiming for a number much lower, or higher than others,....just a thought!
I cant join till at least Nov anyway! Hope Im not butting in!

Good idea but I have no idea about my height to be honest. We could have a 'goal' column but I think we all know what our healthy range should be and I know for me my healthy weight wont be my first goal weight cos that would seem unreachable so I set my self goals of losing 5kg and then when I reach that another 5kg etc. Plus Im not sure how much room we have because I dont know anything about the settings this site has so had to do a budget layout hehe.
Good idea about the flavoured staws, Ive looked at them before and wondered if they were any good

Yeah the flavour straws are good cos u cant pile in heaps of teaspoons full of milo or quik or whatever flavour, so u know how much your getting! They are yum too!

Maybe u could just put up what your goal is at the time,..like a mini goal like u said,..instead of your actual weight,..but I guess if everyone is happy to put their weight,..and people dont compare their weight to other peoples, and feel bad about being bigger or smaller than someone else, then would be ok! Probably a lot of pepole dont know there exact height anyway!
I just know that people have judged me before, when I tell them my weight, but for my height and build im right in the middle of healthy range,..even tho my weight is low compared to a lot of others.

Yeah I was and still am a bit nervous about putting my weight but then I figure the embarassment might motivate me to do better and really its only the lurkers that I worry about, all the other ladies here know Im overweight so should expect a huge number when my weight goes on hehe plus Ive found no one here judges each other on weight (or anything else) which is why Im willing to devulge my size.

you know what, i was embarressed too, til I realised that we are ALL in the same boat - wanting to lose weight, and as for lurkers, I don't know them so I don't care too much.

Height thing is a good idea or at least goals.

Thought also, if everyone is into it, why not put our, not weight goal, but our "health goal" here each week. This week I'm planning to eat breakfast EVERYday! NExt week I wanna target drinking more water. I'm chronically dehydrated I think!

Hi all! If its ok I'm going to join up too. So far I've been just relying on breastfeeding to lose weight which has been working slowly but I remember last time it only worked for a few months, then I started gaining again.
I was weighing 85kg a week after I had Blaire & I'm just touching 70kg now. But my goal weight is 55kg so I have AGES still to go.
I'm think 3 lots of 5kgs for my goals....I've never done WW or anything like that so I'm going in blind so I will need heaps of help from everyone please!!!

I could be wrong here but in the jenny mcarthy book baby laughs she said she went to the doctor and he said its really hard to lose weight for the first 3 months after your bubs is born because your body holds onto the fat even if you are bottlefeeding.

As aimeejoy mentioned on the previous page...if any one is breast feeding remember you do need the extra calories.

I *think* the points for the WW lactation plan is 35 per day (as opposed to 22) but if someone has access to that info they may want to check it....

PS I also agree the secret to WW is lots of points free veges and salad...often the portions we have are larger than we really need (portions should be fist sized)...once you get used to smaller portions it gets easier. But loads of veges help heaps!!

My first time around I really stuck to this and lost what was close on 20 so it does work and is worth it!

Good luck girls I know you can all do it!! I'll be joining you soon enough no doubt!

I had my last takeaways blow out this weekend and had KFC for the first time since being pregnant, I stupidly then went to buy some new jeans and that was just depressing. Im into my pre pregnacy size already but that is still way way way to overweight. Roll on Friday!

Just wondering - if you go and join WW is there a stand down period after you give birth - I mean will they make you wait until 6 weeks after or something or can you join whenever you feel ready?
