Just a quick question about spicy food - has anyone else been warned off it by others? I've had it mentioned to me a couple of times that I shouldn't be eating Indian... but have yet to read anywhere why that's a bad thing?
(I'm *guessing* it's because of the idea that a hot curry can bring on labour at the end of the day, but I kind of figured if my body wasn't ready to give birth, a curry won't be all it takes to start things off this early in the piece!)

is it the spicy food angle they were concerned about or how it is made? I'm steering clear of curry unless I've made it myself, but that's because of all the food you can by in restaurants or takeaways it's the one i'm most concerned about in terms of how long it's been lying around. as I understand it, curry is very rarely made fresh daily. but i've probably got a good dose of first time mum paranoia and it might not be nearly as bad as I think it is.

Mmmm... I don't know. I guess that's a good point - curry reheats well. I would avoid it in a foodcourt, because who knows how long it's been sitting in the warmer, but I'd kind of assumed places like Little India (where today's was from) would be safer. Perhaps that's why they're suggesting steer clear of it, though.

I've had fresh cooked indian food right through my pregnancy and I've been fine. Mind you I like mine mild as I'm a bit of a whimp when it comes to hot and spicy food

Meh, trust me, it doesn't bring on labour. No matter how many times you have it when you're overdue
I agree that I'd be careful where I got it from but other than that, go with what you want.

Agreed!!!
I ate it a lot when pregnant and then had it really hot when I was overdue and it did nothing for me. But, like you said Hopes, I would only get it if cooked fresh.

I agree, it's probably more about the food safety. And maybe you wouldn't want it so hot you get the runs or heartburn. I guess it's like people warning you off curry etc when you're BF - totally depends on the baby. One thing I HAVE been warned of by my midwife is rice. It needs to be cooked fresh and often in restaurantsand takeaways it sits for ages.
MrsJMcD - bad news about the food paranoia, I think I have it worse this time

I've eaten curry from restaurants several times so far with this pregnancy (it's my first) and I have really enjoyed it as I love spicy food.
No heartburn/reflux issues so far thank goodness!
I figure as long as it's not from a foodcourt it's all good :)

If it brings on labour and Indians eat hot curries regularly... How come they never go into labour really early etc?
It's fine to eat!! I ate a lot of hot and spicy food whilst pregnant, also ate some milder curries too!
My aunty is part Indian and they always make their curries fresh, but I suppose in restaurants/take aways it isn't always the case, although I know a few of the fast food places in some malls do cook it fresh due to the popular demand.

Spicey food is fine while pregnant as long as it doesn't make you feel sick after (ie heartburn etc)

Well, I went into labour at 37 weeks after having a big Indian feast!
Seriously though, I think it's fine, I love spicy food and eat heaps of it. I think in my case H was just ready to go - he was engaged from about 28 weeks.

I've been having curries all through pregnancy I make them myself and I like a reasonable heat. I steer clear of the food courts ones mostly cause they're left sitting around and they use a lot of cream in them, and the rice is made in a rice cooker and not necessarily fresh. We're having home made curry for tea tonight - I get the spice paste from the local indian shop and make it myself. yum.

Oh good - I'm glad no-one seems to have heard any good reason to avoid curry on the spice factor alone (I do agree about the food-courts). I'd miss it!!!! Thanks

I eat lots of chilli and I've been fine. My husband is Thai and does all the cooking. However, my tolerance has dropped considerably. The indian woman at my local told me I shouldn't eat lentils. Something about them being bad for pregnancy. She didn't say anything about chilli though!

We lived in Little India when I was pregnant with Callum. He came early but it wasn't from eating curry - it was one of the things I went off coz of heartburn.
I ate chilli crab sauce (ie the spicey, yummy part) up till about 15 weeks or so with C but that gave me heartburn too
This time I have been craving indian food! Roti prata, garlic naan, mutton saag, fish curry ..... mmmmm yummy. We've been going to our favourite indian restaurant about once a week

I wouldn't eaten Indian and Malaysian food every day if I'd had my way. I had major heartburn so I basically couldn't go near it.
