Hello everyone!

Just discovered the site - loving it so far! We're over the moon - I'm just about five weeks pregnant with a due date of the 14th January 2011!

Can anyone help? It's my first pregnancy and I don't have an LMC at the moment. I'm trying to find a midwife - does anyone have any recommendations?

I live in South Auckland, but I'd feel most comfortable about giving birth in Auckland City hospital. My friend who was recently pregnant has horror stories about the two midwives she saw looking down their noses at her about preferring to give birth in a hospital, so I really want to find someone who's no-nonsense and experienced, and also not going to be snotty or overly imposing!

If anyone has any recommendations or suggestions I'd really love to hear them!

Love
Gwennie

I can recommend the ladies at the Midwives Collective in Balmoral - they are all really nice. If you want someone who is very no-nonsense and very experienced then ask for Stephanie Vague (dont let the name put you off).

The other person I have heard really good things about (in a similar no nonsense kind of way) is Lee Moselen - she is based in Epsom, but just off the motorway so nice and easy to get to.

Congrats on your news! Very exciting time! Welcome to OB - hope you have a happy & healthy pregnancy!

Thanks for the recommendations and your kind welcome, MummyFreckle!

I've just spent the entire morning phoning round your recommendations and as many others as I could rustle up, but haven't had any luck. Lots of midwives are on holiday around baby's due date (January), so it's been a really dispiriting uphill battle. Plus most of the Auckland City midwives don't seem to be interested in us down in Manukau, and I can't find a single midwife who's both recommended and available in the Manukau area. It's a real mess!

Anyway, the upshot is that we've decided to just find the money and go with an obstetrician - we've booked an appointment with the Auckland Obstetric Centre, and hopefully that will work out alright.

Thanks again!

Love
Gwennie

congrats Gwennie - not sure what the situation is but I had my baby in January this year and found the same problem as well as I was trying for a VBAC.

I ended up using the community midwives at botany and they were awesome! I had the same midwife for all visits so had continuity of care and delivered at middlemore - i think you can see them and deliver at auckland??
Might be worth looking into :)

Thanks for your replies, LILLIS and MummyFreckle!

I'm breathing a sigh of relief now it's all sorted out, but I'll certainly look more carefully into the midwives at the Botany unit if I need to do this again!
