Has anyone had any experience with Citalopram?

Not sure if I like the immediate side effects and wondering if they carry on long term.

Heya, everyone is different with these types of meds sweet, depending on how well you tolerate them.
If they are unbearable let your doc know and they may prescribe an alternative.
A couple of weeks is usually long enough for them to subside, but if you get anything like heart palpations, severe headaches, fainting or visual disturbances call your doc
Hope your feeling better soon x

I was on 60mg and initially the side effects were awful but they definitely went away. I have tried many different anti depressants and anti anxiety meds and found these to be the most effective.

hehe thats my old thread Tania..

I felt SICK when i was on it, and I had headaches and was mega tired, I wasnt on it for long cos I couldnt handle the side effects, was worse than how I was already feeling, I ended up going down the natural remedy route with great results :)

I'll try to come back and comment, but how long have you been taking them for?

Thats pretty normal when you first start taking them. Give yourself a few weeks if you can til they settle in your system. Lots of meds will do this to you when you start on them :)

Totally normal reaction Ange, it's not nice initially but it really does get better. And word of advise, don't come off them cold turkey!! I did this when I discovered that I was pregnant, it was a horrible horrible two weeks. Even if you feel like they're not working, be sure to wean yourself off them.

I felt terrible when I first started taking it. Dry mouth and felt really woozy. I also had alot of headaches.
It does wear off after about 2 weeks.

I felt really spaced out, like I had taken ecstasy. I had a dry mouth, trouble sleeping, and the weirdest one was I couldn't, um, orgasm.

The side effects wore off after a couple of weeks. All except the last one. That stayed until I stopped taking the medication.

I didn't notice the side effects quite so much with the citilopram probablaby cos I was so tired anyway. However the first time I was on AD's, I did get some of the side effects you are talking about - especially within the first week or

Like the others have said, give it a bit to start working and for your body to adjust. If you still have issues then talk to your GP

Oh yeah, I had no sex drive while on citalopram, and even if I would just try to over-ride that, there was nothing there, I couldn't get excited. I know of others taking this though where this wasn't an issue for them.

I took them about 2-3yrs ago. I felt awesome like almost too happy the 1st two weeks or so then I chilled out and was just fine.
My sex drive was fine altho Dr did tell me this was a side affect.
My biggest one was that when drinking alcohol (Bit of a binge drinker at the time) I'd have absolutly no memory of the night the next morning. Even if I was totally coherant all night I could not for the life of me remember the night.

In the end I started to get depressed on anti-depressants and my Dr up'd my dose and it made me abit woozy so my Dr gave me a different anti-depressant (i forget the name) but I decided to try cope on my own (about a month before getting UTD) and I was and am still doing really well..

Well, am struggling atm but it's mainly due to having a new baby/tiredness

Hope you manage okay x

Hi I have tried quite a few antidepressants and was on Citalopram for a few years. Also experienced the low sex drive, some trouble sleeping but the biggest downside for me was that Citalopram is notorious for being difficult to come off of, quite nasty withdrawal.
It can be trial and error finding a medication that works for you, always a trade off between benefits and side effects! Its worth finding a doctor who knows their stuff too and has some experience treating depression.
Good luck with finding something that works for you, whether it be medication or alternative medicine, we all deserve to feel happy and healthy most of the time :)

Hi Ive been on citalopram and didn't really have many side effects. I just recently came off them though and had such severe brain shocks. I'm on a new antidepressant effexor xr. The citalopram just wasn't helping me with my anxiety. All anti d's have side effects but for most they wear off as time goes on or you get used to them.
