Hi, this might sound a bit silly, but does early labour feel like BHs? I have had BHs since 20wks, and find I get either a frozen stomach, or back pain, or both. But today the pain became so intense when I was driving that I had to pull over, and breathe through it until it passed. It has continued to happen in waves all afternoon - to the point where I could only get comfortable crouching or on all fours In between them I have been fine though, which makes me wonder if it is just BHs getting more intense towards the end of the pregnancy?
My mw is away, and I really don't want to bother her back up unless I have to. Did any of you mums experience this? The reason I don't think it is real labour, is that I have had no pain or discomfort near my cervix, and the only period-pain type thing i have had is the acheing uterous.

Normally BH will go away if you change position and contractions dont care what you do LOL
I would call your back up mw, if your mw is off then she may want early warning as she is covering twice as many ladies atm particularily as you are not term yet (almost though!). Even if it turns out to be nothing at least you have given her the heads up and she we wont mind
I didnt get any cervix pain until my waters were broken....

Call her. It does sound like labour contractions to me, I had no cervix pain until bubs were close to coming out.
My contractions were like strong period pains that came in waves and had a peak to them.
Backup midwife will not mind you calling even if it does turn out to be a false alarm.

Run a bath & jump in it, if it's labour it won't go away, where as BH's will.

Thanks ladies, called backup MW and she said as I hadn't has show or waters break it is unlikely that I am in labour - so just monitoring it for now. Had a shower (no bath tub ) and that reduced the severity of them, so thinking it was just a more intense practice run, although they are still coming - albiet irregularly.
I think I panicked, as I spoke to my mum and she said it sounded excactly like all four of her labours...! Funny how it only occured to me this arvo as to whether pain would be felt down there, as thats always how I imagined it, and I cant remember a thing from antenatal classes.
Did any of you definately know that you were in labour when it happened?

That sounded a lot like how my labour started, I knew I was definately in labour though as my waters broke about half an hour beforehand.
My MW said exactly what A&Cs mum said - have a bath and if it doesn't go away call her. I don't have a bath either, but showers definately helped when I had bad BH's (which I got a lot in the final trimester).
Good luck, not too long now

Yeah I also think thats weird.. some babys are born with their membranes in tact so no waters and the plug can stay in place until later in labour....
I guess just keep an eye on the tightenings and see if they become regular and more intense...

I think she meant it in regard to the whole picture - as the contractions are still irregular - not just as symptoms of labour on their own (sorry still getting intense ones as i type, so probably didn't explain myself too well).
Thanks for your answers, I will keep monitoring it and hope that bubs doesn't decide to make an appearance until at least next week!

I had days of BH's with A & was wondering if I was in labour, but when it hits you do know, it's quite a different feeling.
With the boy the waters broke first so it was pretty obvious even though I'd had literally no BH's!!

yes yes , OMG yes .
With C I kept thinking "why does everyone tell me I'll know when im in real labor ?"
then when the contractions started I was like "ohhhh , now I see what they mean"
And with Ty I had a week of "is this labor , I can't remember " then when the real contractions started I didnt have any doubts , at all , I had an "ohhh crap ,thats right " moment
Both times for me tho , the contractions haven't had any prior build up , just wham started out of the blue and been really intense from the first one with a pain that was different to anything I had ever experienced before

Hey there
That sounds just like how my labour started too. I had regular BHs all day and managed to ignore them as they weren't painful. It wasn't until I went to the loo before bed that I had a show and then it was ALL ON and very different from BH. My waters didn't break till I was fully dilated either. From memory (somewhat faded now) contractions started in my back and went into my groin (under the belly is a really good way to describe it), very much like period pains. No cervical pain rfom memory.
This time I've been having painful BHs for the last few evenings but they are quite different from what I think I remember...
Hang in there - not long now. So maybe your body is just having a warm up

i knew - but then i got a leak in my waters early on so was more or less waiting for it to happen. Don't let irregularity fool you though - my contractions didn't become regular until i was pretty much transitioning! I remember at the time my MW told me to ring her when i couldn't sleep through them cause then it's the real thing...
good luck!!

Hope you're okay! You describe something very similar to what I had and the completely crappy lazy back up midwife told me that as I was only 33 weeks it "couldn't" be labour. 5 hours later I had Kiara.

My contractions didn't become regular until the mw broke the other half of my waters (had been leaking for 12 hours at that stage with irregular contractions as well).

Also remember that you know yourself and your body best and if you feel something isn't as it should then say something! Or demand to be heard!
