I have just started using prefolds and bummis wraps with my 6 week old baby and so far have had one very leaky pee nappy and one very leaky poo nappy after one day of use. Also, the prefold seems to get totally saturated and leaves his skin damp compared to the disposables I was using before.

Can anyone give me any tips as to what I might be doing wrong? Am I not changing him frequently enough? Should I be using a snappy? Are his thighs too small for the wrap?

Also, the flushable liner I was using seems almost useless. Anyone have any tips about how to rinse the poohy prefold and the wrap.

Thanks

How often are you changing him? You need to change a prefold about every 2 hours or it'll get saturated, if it isn't lasting that long then you will need a booster. Bamboo or hemp are good.

His skin will be damp as there is no stay dry layer if you want his skin to be dry you will need to try a microfleece liner. But as long as he is getting some nappy off time the dampness shouldn't be an issue.

I found that flushable liners are useless for NB poo. I have only just started using liners now that Esme is on solids before that it all just slid off it.

To clean the pooy nappies I used to rinse in the laudry tub and used a nail brush to help get it all off. Any bad staining I scrubbed with a bit of sunlight soap then rinsed well before washing. The sun got the stains out of the prefolds really well but sometimes the covers took a bit more work. But even with a stain they are still clean just don't look as nice!

To check the fit lift his legs up while his bottom is still on the ground. If there is any gaping the wrap isn't on correctly. You should be able to get a finger in but not see gaps iykwim. Even with a good fit I found that we still got the odd leak with our prefolds. I moved to pockets and fitteds at about 2/3 months.

Hope this helps

Hi Vanillabean, congrats on your wee boy!!

We had the same issues with prefolds when Chelsea was little. We started using them when she was 3wks old and they were fine to begin with, but then started leaking with every change - so around 3months I gave up, sold those and went to pockets, which we still use and I find great!

And yup, we also found the liners useless with NB poo, and they would just end up stuck to her bum, so flagged the liners lol. If I'd known about microfleece then I would definitely have tried it as a liner - it will keep his bum dry as it wicks moisture away from the skin, so will help prevent nappy rash. I have several scrap bits of microfleece (never used - leftover from sewing pocket nappies) that you're welcome to have if you would like to try it out? PM if you're interested

Congrats on your wee boy

Definitely try using a snappi. That will help keep the prefold where it needs to be. I never used a liner, but found if I changed her at every feed she was never wet long enough to get a rash. She was changed every 2-3 hourly at that age I think. I also found with using them folded for a snappi and no liner, that the poo more often than not kinda went down inside the folded bit rather than getting squeezed out sideways, so I never had a leak, and often it didn't even get onto the cover.

As for washing, to begin with I'd rinse the nappies under the tap and give them a quick scrub with a dishes brush (not the same one I used for the dishes, obviously ), but then I tried just tossing them in the wash and it worked just as well because each poo was so tiny. If you are rinsing, you only need to get the lumps off, not get the yellow stain out. The sun will do that for you pretty quickly. I remember the first load I got out of the wash that were nearly as yellow as when they went in and thinking "oh, great, this is gross!", but I hung them out anyway, and when I went to get them back in, they were clean and white again. So now I don't worry about scrubbing stains, I leave it up to the sun

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I wanted to use pockets but DH insisted we try prefolds because of the cheaper price I have few fuzzibunz too so I'll try those and see if I like them better.

Also, nice to hear from my old friends from when I was ttc. For some reason I couldn't bring myself to post on the forums during this pregnancy - took almost the whole pregnancy until I felt like I was really going to have a baby.

Hey Emmecat, congrats on baby no 2 being on the way.

Aaaaw thanks Vanillabean I totally understand how hard it woulda been for you to post while pg after all you've been through..((hugs))....Im just so so so thrilled you got your little guy at last!  And what a lovely name!

We're just trying to now find newborn cloth naps cos this time I don't want to use disposables at all..we've got stacks of cloth naps but Clodagh will be in half of them and the other half start at about 4kg...which still seems awfully big on a newborn lol. So we may well end up using prefolds as well
