Is it fairly normal for a toddler to lose a bit or not really gain much weight from 12 months?

I weighed Caden last night and on our scales he weighs about 10kg, I am 65 and holding him I go up to 75 and when he sits on them he is 10kg.
At his 12 month check he was 10.52 and at his 15/16 month check he was 11.2.
So he has lost some, and he seems more slim now, not skinny by any means, just slim, but he has shot up in height cos the pants I go him a few months ago that were too long are now almost too short!

Im probably worrying about nothing as he is happy and healthy and eats most things except veges, which he flatley refuses to eat!

Ease my mind a bit please lol (I have plunket today as well, but wanted to ask here first so plunket dont worry me by saying ohh hes not gaining enough)

TIA!!!

ETA- I thought id post it in general as more people venture over here than in the toddler section)

That does seem quite little, they might have something to say, but kids go through fussy stages for sure

Is he quite active? maybe thats why he has lost it.

Maybe he needs more carbs - rice and pasta more maybe?

I am sure they say kids can plateau around 2 and even lose some weight, I know my nephew did, and plunket were not concrened. I would not worry too much and if you are then see your GP.

yep he is very active, never stops! lol
He was such a big baby too, 9lb 8oz and was always quite "heavy" , so I guess thats why Im worrying a bit.

Going by his plunket book he was sitting just over the 50th %ile for weight at 15/16 months and once todays weight is added, if its 10kg he will be just under the 3rd

Ah well I will find out soon, appointment is at 11.30.

Taylah stayed the same weight from 12months until 15 months, she didnt loose or put on any weight. Plunket didnt seem worried however.

If you are concerned just go see the doc or ring plunket

When talking to my plunket nurse they do plateau around this age. It's to do with being more active etc.

You might find your scales weigh differently than plunkets

mack has been the same weight since about 9 months and is nearly 13 now. he is so much more active and eats really really well. he has definitly shot up and thinned out but def not underweight. he is about 10kg but still carries a bit of beef and is about the same size as alot of the nearly 2 year olds he goes to mainly music with so i would worry too much

Just had a look in Lucas' plunket book, 15 months he was 13.5kg, 24 months he was 15kg.

BUT in saying that between 2 and 2.5 he didn't really put on any weight and he's what I'd describe as 'tall and lanky' now, not skinny coz he is big/wide from side to side iykwim? Like he's got broad shoulders & is big build, but no fat lol. It's def something to do with them becoming more active and burning off the food they eat! And can't speak for all toddlers but mine goes through phases of eating heaps, and then going ages with very little food, has always been like that right from when solids were introduced.

He still feels really heavy to lift, I weighed him a couple months back and he was nearing 20kg, he's been picky with eating lately and weighed him the other day and he was back down to 18.4kg. But it fluctuates everyday depending on when I weigh him and he's happy and healthy so I don't see a cause for concern.

Caden looks well in proportion in your pics, and if i recall rightly it was only a week or two ago I said that he was looking much taller in one of your display pics! L shot upwards and lost most his chub around 18-24 months so I'd say that's whats happening with Caden.

Let us know how y ou get on with plunket, I should be chasing up our nurse, we're 2 mnths overdue for the 3yo check!

Daniel being nearly 3 is only about 13-14kg. His weight has been the same for the last year, hes just got taller and leaner but not scary skinny or anything

My wee fatty was sitting around 18kgs at just over 2 years. He is now down to 16.3kgs so he is losing weight although nothing has changed...am think ing he grew up instead of out

Its interesting comparing your own children though as my 7 month old is 10.6 kgs and my 2.5 year old is 16.3 kgs so only 6 kgs between them.

I thought Sam was ginormous for ages and he was nearly 18KG at 2, but he's still around about the same and hasn't grown all that much in height either and he's just turned 3. All of Sam's energy goes into talking bloody non-stop so probably not enough left for eating and growing!

Sam is bloody heavy to lift but looks quite bony in places. He's not a huge eater.

Oh and at a meetup when he was 18 months old, the other hamilton mums had 12 month olds and he was massive compared to them, but Novembermums Megan is about the same height as Sam and MonicaMouses Blair is heaps taller now!

My stepsisters son is a bit younger, lighter and about the same height but he eats heaps!

My girls have never really grown much, especially around 2 when they start loosing that baby fat and looking like a real kid from just being more active. Plunket have never really been concerned. Maddi really slowed down at about 9 months, (she was a chunky baby being born at 9 6) and probably hasn't put on heaps since then. I dont even think she has made it over 10kg yet.

Also I think that its had to get an accurate weight using different scales so I really wouldn't worry too much

Brennan was big at birth but slowed down just before a year old. hes about 9.4kgs now (but then hes always been on the smaller side once he started moving)

Callum is a bit younger than Caden but he's started slimming down recently too. He was over 12kg at 14 months (I think it was) but now hovering around 11.5-11.8kg. He seemed to shoot UP very quickly a couple of months ago. Still solid, but not quite as chunky I think it's really normal for them to plateau around 1-2yrs old, once they're off running and climbing everywhere.
