Hi there,
My poor we boy has suffered with bad acne and cradle cap for the last 4/5 weeks. The acne's not so bad now, but the cradle cap has spread all over his face
I've been using Rosehip oil, which helps, but Plunket have suggested cutting out dairy from my diet to see if that helps. I was thinking I'd give it till the end of the week and see how it is, because cutting out dairy is quite a big effort.
Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and whether it helped or not.
On the plus side, I should loose the 8kgs I'm still carrying, in about 2 weeks if I cut out dairy LOL

Hey, we are going dairy free for similar reasons, DD also has got eczema too on her elbows, legs, side of face. She had cradle cap quite bad but one PN told me it was nothing and people only worry for 'cosmetic reasons' but my actual PN told me it might be dairy related.
I had my last bit of dairy today *sniffs* will let you know how I get on, but apparently it takes 2 weeks to clear your system

Good luck Nicole
It really is quite a big deal to cut something like that out your diet.... especially when I have 1kg of yummy brie in the fridge

I've cut out dairy for months now, cos it helps the reflux. We both still have eczema, and DD has mild cradle cap much the same as she had when I was on dairy. So it may not help.
Jealous of your kg og brie though!!!

Yum Brie!!
It's tough I had maccaroni cheese for lunch today then clicked - cheese! So going to try vegan cheese and see if that's ok with Lily.
ATM She gets eczema, the runs and farts a lot. The runs are always the day after I have cheese.
My PN told me it is usually dairy, but mainly cheese that give them upset tummies and eczema.

Yep you might find it helps. My oldest was allergic to dairy and was on a specialist formula his ezcema was awful and at 3 he still has some cradle cap and my youngest showed symptoms so being a bit more onto it I went dairy free whilst still breastfeeding, it helped with his cradle cap, ezcema, reflux and his overall settledness (not sure that is actually a word).
You definitely need to give it at least two weeks before you can guage whether it's making a difference or not. If you do think it is making a difference you can try reintroducing just a tiny bit of dairy, I found that I was ok to have milk in my tea but if I ate cheese or yoghurt or ice cream we were in trouble. I actually didn't mind not eating cheese and I found soy chocolate ice cream to be a great substitute. But the bit I really couldn't cope with was not having tea or coffee so I was very glad when I found he could cope with me just having a tiny bit of milk in my drinks.
Good luck, and honestly it isn't that bad once you are doing it.

Ditto what Two Boys said & Yes the weight loss can be huge too.
Also eczema can also be related to wheat.
From a personal POV of cutting out dairy, my scalp has been awesome, until I slipped up, and had cheese in something I ate, unfortunate thing of not making a friend super aware of the dairy thing & man my scalp has been giving me gip all week! Not to mention the effects on C.

I am dairy free because of ds's reflux and it definitely helped him. It's not too difficult to cut out with all of the different milk replacements (soy, rice, almond etc.) but yes I do miss cheese, and gelato etc. (at least there is sorbet!).
NKAP9, is vegan cheese actually dairy free? If so where do you get it? And does it taste alright? I have only heard of vegetarian cheese which is still dairy but just doesn't have the rennet in it.

I really hope its not wheat related! All though an uncle has celiacs (sp?). I don't think it is, although it could be... cr*p, it only started when I decided I needed more calcium and kept having toasted cheese sammies for lunch...

Nicole, Celiacs & wheat allergy are quite different. Celiacs is an allergy to gluten which is in a HEAP of stuff! See how the dairy goes first & then think about wheat.

I think it could possibly be wheat related, as it happened round the same time, iygwim..

I thought that sheeps milk has a different protien in it so it makes it ok to eat? I could be wrong though...
We have been dairy free for ages. I can tell when I slip up as E's ezcema flares. Once you get started it's not too hard when you are at home. It's out and about that is tricky!

sorry havent read replies...
Liam had a very very bad case of cradle cap..and the only thing that fixed it was microcreme.. i didnt want to use it as it was steriod cream but it was looking so angry and sore..and i used that and it went away..nothing else worked... re the excema that can often be food related I think..Liam is getting some of that too
my oldest had excema which disappeared when he onto special formula.. but he wasnt eating at that stage so not sure..

I'm thinking I need to do this as my wee one has an upset tummy, and is getting exczema on his face and cradle cap, which he hasn't had before.
I love having a cup of tea, what milk do people use instead and do you get used to the taste?

Well since I have cut out cheese about 3 days ago I have already noticed a difference in Lily's poos! *yay* they aren't the (sorry tmi) runs anymore, they are still the same colour, but they have the little chunks in them like they used to! So looks like no more cheese for me!

OK, so Roo's skin is a lot better, but still seems very dry, all over. So I'm going to try the dairy free thing
Any tips?
I'm a bit concerned about calcium intake. Is it worth popping a multi vitamin/mineral because my iron's probably low as well because I don't eat meat.

I have been dairy free now for 5 days and I have noticed an improvement in DS. He has reflux and also excema along his jawline. He is feeding better and not screaming during a feed anymore, although his excema hasn't yet improved. Will be interesting to see how it all is after the full 2 weeks.
I had started to wonder about calcium too. I've just started back on a pregnancy and breastfeeding vitamin to help with that and iron as I'm always low in iron.
I haven't found it that hard at all being dairy free, I just make sure I read the back of every label (its amazing some of the foods that have dairy in them). Although, I haven't yet been out anywhere for meals or to anyones house so things will probably be a lot harder then.
Good luck

My PN told me to try calcium supplements, waiting on a prescription from the nurse but I need it as cheese, yoghurt and ice cream are the only real calcium I get as I can't drink milk.
Noticed a change in her poo today, been cheese free and all bread lol free (still have ice cream and wheat) for 3 days, she still has a bit of eczema on her face, but the eczema on her arms isn't as bad as it used to be same with the bit on her left leg.
It might have been that once I like something, I tend to over eat it, so I discovered toasted sandwiches were really filling and had that every day for lunch for a week then her poos went all funky... So maybe if I limit it, we might be ok. But will wait a month and see.

Hi...
Any updates from the dairy free gang?
I've only been a week, so nothing really different here apart from he seems to be pooping a lot more frequently.

Yep. It has now been 15 days of dairy free here and we have had major improvements.
No more screaming at the breast, pulling off and arching the back, a whole heap less vomiting, much better sleeping. He is a different baby, much more settled and content.
It hasn't seemed to clear up his excema though, in fact that has got worse in the last couple of days, but I'm thinking that is an entirely different issue.

interesting thread. I've gone wheat free for a week now to see if ds2 tummy probs get better and they have already.
no more smelly farts and more freq poos so far. But he seems to be getting eczema on his face now. has always had bad cradle cap and reflux too. Really can't cut out dairy too tho! Struggling with wheat - hungry all the time (but have lost 1.5 kgs tho).
I'm not sure i'll be able to keep it up till finish bf, but it will be helpful when looking at starting solids.

Hey guys, hang in there...what they could be doing is having withdrawal symptoms. Usually these are about 3 days in, but can be up to a couple of weeks in especially as dairy can take up to 6 weeks to clear the system.
Withdrawal is basically when they are purging the toxin's from their bodies so things like eczema can get worse. Allergies & intolerances often break out on the skin somewhere in a weak point.

Crafty I found as soon as I cut the cheese the cradle cap got better, interestingly when I introduced more cheese to my diet it got worse... Luckily I don't have much dairy in my diet anyway except for ice cream, yoghurt, cheese, and cram/sour cream/cream cheese. (Gosh that is a lot when you think about it lol!) but I've only had to cut cheese so far!

Kel that is really good to know. My boy has developed spots (almost like bed sores) on the back of his head where his hair has rubbed off and has just the last couple of days got a really nasty looking nappy rash despite only using cloth nappies and wipes and having heaps of nappy free time.

You haven't accidentally had any dairy Tara? What's your soy intake like & have you had anything like that in the couple of days prior?
Cause it could also be that now that you've purged dairy other symptoms to other foods will show. I got a really bad reaction when we tried to challenge soy, I sorta knew, but had no idea I'd react that badly

I have soy milk on my cereal most days, but not for about 4 days. That is it. I don't think I've had any dairy and have only been eating at home.
Oh no! Just checked the back of a packet gravy mix and that has dairy in it (MIL bought dinner around the other night with gravy on the beef). I guess that could be it, although it wasn't much at all. That would be quite a strong reaction huh?!

Well, we've been to the doctor and before I even mentioned that I was dairy free he suggested the rashes could be due to an allergy, he said the one on the back of the head definately looked allergy related.
Apart from the gravy the only other thing I've had in the last couple of days that I haven't had for ages is eggs. So will cut that out too and see how we go.
nkap - that is strange. Wonder if it is because of the cheese with Lily?
