Hi guys
Sorry to put this in general just figured I might get more answers
So looking at contraception until after our wedding in January and am wondering about peoples experiences with different kinds of pills and weight gain or other side effects. So if you would be so kind as to let me know what pills you have been on? What you have preferred? Which ones have had bad side effects? If any of them have caused you to gain/lose weight? I realise that the pill will generally react differently to different people but just want to work out if there are any I should avoid.

I HATE the pill. It messes my body up so much. I hate all pills but thats just because they dont agree with me.
Perhaps the mini pill is a good idea, that way it wont muck up your cycle to much if you want to TTC soon after wedding.
I went on a mini pill that was 98% effective & you could take it within 12 hrs (not 3hrs) but it cost me $30 every 3 months

I was on monofeme for years and years and they dont muck up your cycle, I ovulated as soon as I came off it and Im PCOS and I got pregnant 3 months after stopping it - in fact there is little evidence to suggest the pill confuses your cycle at all - without some other physiological issue
the pills have slightly higher levels of this or that drug, so you just have to try til you find one that works for you
You will have to take into account breastfeeding -? will have to be a mini pill
the different doses do contribute to certain side effects or lack of but you will have to discuss the good and the bad points with your GP
Just because I found this pill perfect dosent mean it will work at all for you

Hey bex , well im on the mini pill Noriday (seeing this forrum just reminded me to take it ) i cant go on the normal pill and have never been on it as i suffer from debilitating migrains and a heart murmor . I did get pregnant with Amelia on the mini pill ( she was very unplanned ) but that was because i acidentally skipped a few days . with the mini pill you cant skip any days or u have to take it for a whole week and use condoms in that week before you are safe again . i have no side affects on the mini pill , no weight gain , skin problems , mood swings etc. I use to be on the depo (injection) but i would never go back on it . i was on it from age 18-22 and when i look back at photos i really was overweight in that time ( i was 67kg at my heaviest and am now 53kg which is my normal weight) i also found that the depo gave me massive mood swings and bad skin . it took over a year for me to get my period back after being on the Depo and it was then that i noticed the weight just fall off me . i wasnt trying at all to loose it . even when i got pregnant i got to 70kg which is just 3kg more than what i was when i was on the depo. everybodys different tho and i do know of the odd person having no side effects on the depo- just not many . i am thinking about going on the iud so would be interested in hearing some opinions on that .

I am too scared to go on the IUD again after getting pregnant on it once lol, I know the chances are pretty slim but still freaks me out mostly because we lost that baby and I'd hate to have that possibly happen again

I was in due Aug so you possibly were lurking and saw. I know it can be really effective especially if you are religious of checking it but is probably better for longterm which at the moment we aren't looking.

Has anyone used Loette?

yea that would of been it , i wasnt sure at one stage if i was due in july or august so was reading both .
the good thing about the pill i am on ( might be the same with others but as i havent had them i dont know for sure) is that if you want t TTC then you only have to stop taking the pill , you dont have to worry about waiting months for the depo to wear off or get the IUD removed ( which i hear can be painful ) its a good option if you are planning to have another bubba at some stage in the not too distant future

I was on Noriman (sp?) pre TTC Jackson, then went onto the Mini Pill post birth which I had constant nausea and break through bleeding with. So I went off that and had the Implant put in which ended up being worse than the mini pill.
Anyways, before I digress, I didnt have any problem with gaining weight, more loosing it. But we dont think its related to that.
Sorry havent used Loette. Is there some kind of barrier thingy (sorry not 100% sure what its called) that is inserted like the IUD??

I was on loette for almost 9years, and err was rather rampant and didnt get pregnant on it, found it better than the mini pill because you have 12(?? or more) hour leeway to take the pill. I came off it and 10 days later was pregnant with B. Here was me expecting for it to take ages, so definatly didnt slow down my fertility. When i finish BF, i will go back on it but yea cant take when bf.
Had minimal weight gain, nothing outrageous, although hard to say since i was 15 when i started so hard to know what was normal teenage growing. but i was always a size 8-10.
Only downside is the cost i think its about $40 for 3months although has been 2 years now and i cant remember excatly. But it worked for me so was worth it.

I was on loette for 3 years, worked well until I decided I was sick of remembering to take a pill and switched to depo for 6 months. First 3 months ok, bled constantly for the next 3, went off it and loette wasn't strong enough to stop the spotting (it's one of the lowest dose pills) so went to monofemme. On that for another 3 years, went NFP for 12 months successfully before a 'freak' early ov and DD!

I was on Loette and it cost $40 for 3 months
I was on Monofeme for a few years before having DD. I cant remember if it mucked up my cycle because i wasnt charting or anything but it did take me over 1 year to conceive DD.
Your other option might just be to use condoms, and not have sex while you are fertile at all

Hey Bex
Personally the mini-pill did muck up my cycle (well I was 18 and wasn't tracking my cycle as such but had spotting pretty much constantly). After my heart op I got the all-clear for the combined pill and found that great in that I had no spotting while taking the hormone pills and light 3-day periods. Only downside was bad cramps on the Sunday before AF starting. I stopped taking the pill 9months before TTC and my cycle was regular for the first 3 months after stopping but then it went all haywire. Maybe if I'd stayed on the pill right up till TTC then it wouldn't have been so hard! (That's just speculation hehe).
Oh the name of the mini pill I was on was Femulen. And the last combined pill was Levlen (can't remember the other ones, they got changed a few times to try and alleviate the cramps but it didn't work).
Just goes to show everyone's different eh!

I was on Norimin for about 6 years, came off it last year. I hated it!!! Was fine for the first couple of years (aside from making me feel really sick the first while i was taking it) but then it started to change, my boobs were constantly sore all the time and hard, and made me feel sick, and i was so so grumpy! then i started getting really depressed on it so was time to call it quits! !
eta: completely lost my sex drive too!
then about a month after i came off it BAM i had the worst skin ever! (and this was a couple of months before my wedding!) total breakout all over my shoulders and back. still getting some of the effects now almost a year later.
i dont think im ever going to go back on the pill again

I was on Levlen pre-TTC. I started on that at about 15 or 16 until 24 and had no problems with it at all, no weight gain, no spotting etc etc.
I will go back on that after I stop BF
ETA - I came off the pill in Dec 08 and found out I was pregnant with DS in April 09

I was on the pill for 8 years. I was also running 3 months together due to period pain. When I went off the pill my cycle just carried on as normal. It took me just over 6 months to get preggo, though we werent charting and we werent .... very often (maybe once a month) cause of a medical condition.

ive been on Estelle (now called Ginet) since 15 apart from 3 months where i tried Yaz then 3 months where i tried depo and then had to wait 4 months on no contraception for my body to get normal)
Ginet is given to PCOS women as it has anti-androgen propeties and reduces acne. for me it gave me acne and every month im on it i get bigger boobs and gain weight.
Yaz = instant boob job D to E in 1 month of being on it, went down to DD (back up to E now thanks to going back on Ginet)
Depo = Dont even do it. i bled the whole 3 months, full proper period and had to take the pill aswell to slow the bleeding. and i also gained 6kg within 2 weeks, i just ballooned.
i now have an IUD (well i got it on the 31st may) and i dont have sore boobs that are growing, and apart from the killer cramping its doing ok for now

I have been on Levelen before when I was younger and that was back when I was skinny so I don't think it effected me weight wise but again that was between the ages of 14 and 17 so by body changed a lot after puberty, might be worth giving it a go though. We have been doing the condom thing but they keep irritating where I tore and so that is meaning I am not wanting to have sex very often (poor DP) cause I just end up uncomfortable. Maybe worth going back onto Leveln then and see how that goes, thanks so much Ladies for your help. I will probably stop taking the pill a month or so before we officially start TTCing anyways.

lexie, if you are getting heaps of irritation from it then you can get a fentons repair, where they cut and restitch. I had it done last year as my hymen never broke so sex was excruitiating. it has worked wonders.

i just had surgery to remove a cyst and my cut is the same affect as a 3rd degree internal tear that had to be repaired. if im lucky my scarring will be minimal as inside is moist and heals fast and well. but if im not lucky and its rough or painful they will go in again and fix it for me

Thread jack, but who do you talk to about a repair? And will they do it if I'm planning on getting pg again in a year or so? I kinda figure wait till I'm done doing damage and then get it fixed all at once
On the original Q, I was on monofeme for ages, but found it reduced my libido. I switched to microgynon and that was fine. I was on the pill for 9 years and got pg in the second cycle after coming off. My understanding is that the pill doesn't actually affect your fertility, but what it can do is mask a potential problem as you aren't displaying your normal cycle and so you don't see the potential issues.

Thanks Becky, have emptied my inbox out a bit now lol!
I was never stitched in the first place my tear wasn't that big so the midwife gave me the option of being stitched or just letting it heal naturally, so I didn't get the stitch now I get irritation sometimes.

I still get irritated to Bex, your not the only one. We stay away from condoms but we arent to worried about using contraception anyway atm.

I was on Microgynon before we TTC #1. I used to stop and start it depending on whether I had any (never bothered buying it here, so when it ran out we would just use condoms). I don't *think* I had any issues with weight gain on the pill.
I also used Depo while I was at Uni mostly because it was free from Student Health and I was in a long term relationship (with my now DH). I didn't have any weight/spotting/bleeding issues although when I came off it I spotted for a month until my doc put me on the pill (not sure which one now) and then I had a withdrawal bleed at the end of that cycle and pretty much went back to normal.
After I had Callum we just used condoms but we wouldn't have been too bothered if I'd gotten pregnant. Having said that, we must have been responsible enough because as soon as we did start *trying* I was UTD pretty quickly [:)]

weight gain will depend on the hormone/s level/s so I think you should go in and talk to your GP about what your concerns are. There are are also risk factors that they will need to consider when looking at the best contraception for you , might want to have chat about the other issue too so that your all sorted for your honeymoon baby

None, I hate them all. I have tried them all but an really expensive one I refused to pay for cos I didn't want to waste $42 a month to try and see if it would help.
Haven't read all the posts, but talk to you dr and see what they recommend for you.

I was on loette for years with no issues.
With the irritation and condoms I had that. It lasted about a year and over that time it gradually got better

talk to your dr, and they should be able to see if it would help and if so refer you to a gynacologist. its a pretty simple and straight forward proceedure. I'm not sure if it needs general or not, I had mine with general but i also had a diagnostic laproscopy and treatment for endometriosis at the same time

I've been on the mini pill and hated that you had to take religiously around the same time each day. Was on monofeme and that was quite good except I would bleed for 4 days then 2 days of nothing and then another 2 days of light bleeding. On Depo now and have had one AF on it and then a few spotting this month - not really noticed any weight gain.

I was on monefeme, noriman, noriday and another couple were tried too. Never affected my cycle but had other issues and ended up being told I was infertile due to a reaction to the chemicals obviously they were wrong coz I ended up with Jake LOL oh well. We've talked about contraceptive since we want to wait til next year before thinking about TTC again but we've decided against any since I'm allergic to latex and we never remember to dress the man anyway lol and I don't wana take chemicals and since I've had problems with my cervix an IUD isn't really an option. If it happens it happens! None of that is a help to you but I'm feeling chatty
