Well, we have had our basinette for about two months now and we have a cat who is about 9 months old. Last night for the first time our cat got in the basinette.
I hit him quite hard then because i thought i might have hit him too hard, so he should get in it again.
So, does my cat know something i don't??

Sorry I wasn't quite sure of what you meant either!! I like the balloons idea... and hey Linelle, good on you for giving him a decent smack - it seems to learn cats pretty well!! I feel terrible smacking the neighbour's cat who lives at our place, but I've only had to do it twice and he's SO KNOWN why! (He used to spray, scratch and bite - now he'll spray some things outside and he freaks if we look angry about it! And he still loves us to bits - go figure!). No more tantys from him too

I smack my sisters cat when he scratches and bites me. I don't think he cares, but my sister does...

Hi Linelle,
I have had the same problem with my cat - ever since we have set things up in the baby room i.e. cot and basinette etc I have caught her out sleeping in them. I have had to tell her that is where the baby is going to be sleeping and took her out of the room so now I just close the bedroom door. Not sure if they know what's going on - I think with my cat she just likes sleeping in small confined spaces and maybe because it's the most sunniest room of the house

To be honest I think it just means that he thinks it's comfy! Pippin had an obessesion with the shopping basket part of our mountin buggy until we put it away...bottom of the change table is a good for him too...think it's 'cos he wants to cushion himself with the comfy cloth nappies.
Balloons is a good idea to keep them out or get a water gun and squirt him.

I second the water gun idea, that's what we did with our three and it's worked a treat.

Oh yea i have heard the Water gun thing. I will have to go and buy it. The thing is that we have had it for 2 months and this is the first time he has even tired to get in it. Do you think he knows that the baby is not far away?? I was told that cats have a sense about things like that.

My sister's cat acted weird when I was in labour - but it was more a case that Nala followed me everywhere, and would stare at me intently 30 seconds before each contraction hit.

hmmm I have heard about animals who seem to "know" when things are about to happen but never really had any experience of it myself...I think animals are quite intuitive but who knows if they would be that intuitive..?

My cat decided to sleep in our bassinet to - I guess it just looks comfy. I now have to close the door. My cat does seem to be a lot nicer since I have been pregnant. (she is usually a right stroppy little madam!)

I think cats just see a bassient and think "wowo, my kind owners made me a bed!". We got this cat spray stuff - stinks at first but then is odourless after an hour or so. It was injapan though so no idea if you can get it here- ask a pet store

i would smack the cat too to be honest, not only do i not like the idea of the cat claiming the bassinet as a sleeping spot, they are really dirty creatures! ( or is that just ours? they leave hair and dirt everywhere, its so yuck ) I have to leave the door open to the babys room as it is the cold room (sorry bubs! last one in gets the worst room ) and it can get musty pretty quick if the door is shut, so that isnt an option.
thankfully our cats follow the sun, but if i do find them in that room sniffing around i give them a hurry up out of there.

i put balloons in the cot and the bassinette before jack arrived and kitty never ventured into either of them
i'm going to do the same thing this time around with the bassinette, as bubs will be in our room til he/she is sleeping through the night and kitty also sleeps on our bed

When someone is around during the day / evening and Erin is sleeping in her bassinette, we leave the door cracked open and they know not to go in, but at night we are able to shut the cats down one end of the house and they still have access to the cat door to come and go (as well as the lounge to sleep in).

My cats are afraid of Ella coz she cries really loud lol so they wont go near her stuff hehe
I personally dont know if i believe in cats sensing that the baby is near, i was in labour at home for 16 hours and they didnt have a clue lol just kept sleeping lol

Cats do sense things, but not sure if they'd know the baby was coming. One of my cats started curling up high on my tummy the couple of days before i found out i was pregnant and continued to do this right up till the m/c...doesn't do it anymore
Anyway, i wouldn't get in the habit of closing off the babies room as when the baby comes no doubt you'll have the door open and the cat will need to know from the start that it is off limits - do the balloon thing heard it works a treat.

don't think my cat had any idea I was having a baby - we still have him this time around. When I was pregnant with son (13 years ago) my other cat (whose in cat heaven now) use to always sit on my belly where he was never one to sit on your knee before I was pregnant. ... Doesn't really answer any questions though.

I'm pretty sure two out of three cats of ours knew I was in labour, to what extent they knew a baby would be the end result, I have no idea ! But Maddy our "momma" cat (the only one who has had any kittens, just one litter), followed me around the whole time that I laboured at home - and if I was kneeling over the seat of a chair or something she would jump up on it and try to rub against me.

If you're worried about how the cat will react to baby arriving home, I've heard that it helps to get someone to first bring home something that has the baby's scent on it - a blanket or wrap or some clothing that baby was in, and let the cat have a good sniff, to give them the idea that bubs isn't something to be threatened by. I might try that, 'cause neighbours cat tends to spray or fight things he's threatened by, and that'll be the end of his visits here should he spray the basinette or anything!! I'm already phasing him out of the house, and he's coping with it pretty well for a cat that used to have his own chair by the fire! But I'm guessing if your cat is actually yours, not some feline lurker who just spends all day at your place, then you probably don't want puss kicked out.

Oh ok, that is a good idea Andie.
Yea i think i will put the basniette in our room, where it will be when Ethan arrives (it is in the other room at the moment) and put some ballons in it.
Thanks heaps for your comments and ideas ladies.

You could also put your baby bath in it with about an inch of water in it.
My cat started doing stuff like that when i stopped paying as much attention to him. I treated him like a baby and tried out the vibrating bouncenet on him (bad i know) and then when I was too exhausted to give him the same kind of attention he would do bad thngs.
The whole time I was in labour he sat next to me. When we came home from the hospital he was asleep in the cot and I'm guessing its because i was gone for a few days.
