my mum always ate home kill when she had me and my brother and I think I turned out ok

I would assume it would be fine as long as it had been stored and cooked properly.

Yep, I'd say as long as you know who butchered it and that it was all done in sterile conditions and stored properly...

Hi Mummy_becks! I had home kill meat all through my pregnancy and my midwife said it was fine as long as it was done by a professional homekill butcher & not "your mate who's handy with a chainsaw & butcher's knife!!".
Its done nearly exactly the same as the meat you buy in the supermarket. As a bone fide farmer's gal I have seen it done

Wow i never thought about that i have eaten home kill meat the whole way through and was never told i couldn't.

Yea i second toniellie about the professional homekill butcher and not "your mate who's handy with a chainsaw & butcher's knife!!".

It should be fine so long as it is cooked properly

I think homekill meat is probably a lot safer than the stuff we can get from supermarket butcheries anyway!  Their tenderised steak is "tenderised" with awful chemicals, and staff aren't always up to scratch with hygiene standards (that said, some are brilliant, but I've heard from supervisors at a certain supermarket that they wouldn't buy meat from their own workplace, after seeing how long it's sometimes left outside of the cold shelf or chiller between arriving in the store and being displayed for sale).

I have to agree with Andie, I used to work as a butcher's assistant at a supermarket....Although the room we worked in was always at 4-5 degrees, the meat was still sitting out for quite awhile.
Firstly when it arrived, before we put it in the chiller (0 degrees)..then while the butchers were cutting it up..while it was sitting on the shelf waiting to be wrapped...while it was on the trolley waiting to be put on display.
I don't know about chemicals to tenderise meat though! We only ever used a little machine with a winding handle that squished it & put little slits in it. That thing was hard work which is why I remember it so well.
I think the worse was mince. Basically we just shoved a whole heap of meat into a machine that did its thing & deposited the mince into a couple of fish bins then it would be out with your hands to scoop it into the trays so it could go onto the display.
And it wasn't a case of using gloves just washing hands really, really well before handling the meat.

I would prefer homekill meat any day mainly because I know that the beast has been well treated before heading to my freezer. Also NZers get the "crap" meat from the supermarket.
All meat is graded & the best stuff gets shipped offshore for export markets.

Good to hear. The meat has come from my friend's uncle who is the farmer and chief killer of the meat so it should be ok. I'll make sure it is cooked properly before I eat it thou.

Yip I am with what other girls have said and think that it is safe to eat. We have eaten "home kill meat" a few times as my hubby's parents have a dairy farm and we eat there occassionally. As long as it is cooked well. I haven't had any issues so far
