Sorry if I am posthing this in the wrong place.
So a bit of background - I am in a steady relationship where we have spoken about babies and agreed to start trying at the beginning of next year - I am in my early 30's and also suffer from PCOS so things could be difficult. I have just started a new job (as in Monday!!) and have been feeling a bit queezy for about the last week, mainly just at night, so didn't think much of it or think that I could be pregnant, but today thought I would be doubly sure - and it was positive. I don't know whether to tell my partner now, or go to the dr and get a confirmation first just in case.... I am in shock as didn't think I was ovulating.. Also - does F/Planning do blood tests or if I go there will they just do a similar test to the one I have done. ARRRGGGHHH!! I am kinda excited but also bad timing with the job etc

Hi monkeys. Welcome and congratulations. Wow!
I am not sure about the details of what family planning does, but I do know that pregnancy-related visits to your GP are free, so will be able to get a free test there. Regarding your job, check out the Dept of Labour info on parental leave - it may help you feel more in control of the situation to have more info at hand (i.e. about qualifying for parental leave etc). You don't need to tell your employers for ages - you have plenty of time to seek advice and get used to the idea. I hope you find all the help you need here. | thanks - I just had a look on the dept of labour site, I would be entitled to the paid leave, but not the extended leave.... I earn quite a bit more than my partner, so we had talked about me working and him taking the long leave next year anyway - this would just mean that is really the only option. |

I'd tell your partner too..
And you sorta don't need doctors to "confirm" it, a positive test is all you really need. they will make you do another if you want to and send you off for your bloods but thats not to confirm your preg, its to check out your health and such (which a MW can also do) |

You might not be entitled to the extended leave but that doesn't mean your employer won't let you have it. I found out I was pregnant whilst working notice at my old job, bad bad timing...lol, was then on holiday for a few weeks as we had a trip to England already booked so by the time I started my new job I was 9 weeks pregnant, I told them on my first day and they were fine, I got the 14 weeks paid leave and then they just told me to come back when I felt like it pretty much. I never went back fulltime but did work casually for them for a while once my baby was 6 months then resigned when I was pregnant with number 2. If you go see a Dr they will do the maternal blood test and they sometimes redo the pee test but not always cos they just use the same ones that you buy at the supermarket anyway. A mw will do the bloods if you haven't seen a gp so it's not totally necessary to go the dr's. But if you don't know where to start with finding a mw then a trip to the dr's would be good as they can give you a list of mw's in your area and be your LMP until you find a mw. I'm pretty sure FP do pregnancy tests but as someone else said pregnancy related visits to your gp are free anyway, and I don't know if FP would do the bloods for you.
And I would tell your partner too. |

wOW Sounds like you had a really lovely boss!! Fingers crossed mine will be the same. I am going to do a second test (Glad I got the 2 pack now)- more for myself than anything else, specially with the PCOS and being on the pill (and not missing any) the chances must be millions to one!!
I think I will have to tell him anyway, if I am going to have a sleepless night then so can he :-P |

I got a 2 pack because the first time the test was a dud  so ended up doing 3 !
You can see your gp or just start ringing midwives. I saw my doctor for something unrelated, but they provided me with a list of MWs in the area. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

not all GP visits are free when you are pregnant - I had to pay when I confirmed my pregnancy!!

Wow, I am surprised people have had to pay. I am not aware of anyone I know personally who has had to pay for their initial visits to a GP.
The Ministry of Health site says this: 'Most maternity care is free for women who are New Zealand citizens, have permanent residency for two or more years, or who are eligible through other criteria under the Eligibility Direction. You may be charged for antenatal or childbirth education classes, and some tests at a private laboratory. You may also have to pay to have an ultrasound scan. Telling the partner went pretty well - when he got home he asked how I was feeling as he knew I had been feeling average for a few days, I told him I wasn't feeling the greatest but at least now I knew why and told him.
He was shocked and asked a couple of times if I was kidding (cos that is something that you would kid about!) but then was really supportive, and of course given how unlikely it was thru the contraception and PCOS he was telling me that he must have great stuff lol - typical male stuff. He was a little upset that I didn't involve him in the initial test - but as I said to hiim I really didn't expect it at all to be positive, so didn't even cross my mind. Heading to a dr today to get a blood test - the shock is easing for me now and the excitment is hitting

| Hey congrats Monkeys and what a classic male reaction! So happy for you he took it well. It's funny how these things can happen, me and my husband had been "sort of trying" for 6 months (i.e. just risking it) and the month we conceived we only actually BDed once, as I had some other issues going on, so it only takes one time! Might see you in the Feb thread if you're already a few weeks along (me due 7 Feb) |

Heaps of GPs dropped out of the Government maternity funding protesting at the policy changes that forced many out of providing maternity care. Ring and check, but a lot of places will charge you. Your LMC cannot charge you (s 88 notice), except if you are receiving private specialist treatment. ------------- www.makedomum.blogspot.co.nz |
