Another thought at this stage- 37wks.. I am quite active and out and about everyday... I can't help thinking that one of these days I might subject a few spectators to a huge gush of waters breaking... in the supermarket? On a busy street?!
The thought doesnt really appeal to me and part of me thinks I should limit trips out!!

Where did yours go- if at all?!

Second antenatal class at 30 weeks.
Felt like I had a UTI, and wet pants, but not a huge gush.

I was worrying about that too at the same stage - even to the point of carrying towels in my car with me and of course they never broke, even when fully dilated and ready to push....MW ended up breaking them!

A piece of advice from our antenatal class (yes, mostly in jest!): whenever you're in the supermarket, put a jar of pickled onions in the trolley....should your water break, apparently you can break the jar of onions and pretend it wasn't you!

From what I've heard, even if they do break 'unexpectedly' it's not usually one big gush like in the movies, it tends to leak out over time, as the baby moves a bit too

I was the same as blondy, except mine ruptured as soon as I hit 10cm.

I had to giggle at the pickled onions scenario. I'll keep that in mind for this time around

Yeah mine didn't break until just before ready to push. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think only around 10-15% of labours start with waters breaking (although going by the movies, you would think that they all had to start that way!)

Hahaha, love the pickled onions idea. When I'm a bit closer I'll send DP running to grab us a jar of those before I get too far into the shop - just in case!!

Mine both broke at 5am on the day of labour. It was the first sign that I was in labour. My contractions started at 1200 midday with bubs no 1 and at 2pm with no 2. Sorry I don't know the code for babies and husbands like DD and DH. Maybe someone would tell me.

Mine trickled constantly over hours , no gushing like the movies thankfully and I've never seen it happen like that either. Good luck though, there's always a first time for these things, but hopefully it'll happen to someone else.

I'm so paranoid about it, from 37wks Iast time I kept to myself at home just in case, only to have them broken after an emergency transfer into town.

Now I've probably been lulled into a false sense of security, they'll go at the supermarket, & being a small township EVERYONE will know I've gone into labour so quickly. Gossips

It would be rather funny if every time I went to the supermarket I purchased a thing of onions too

My hind waters broke at home. I'd just gotten up off the couch to see what DH was doing in the garage. Just as I got to him (internal access) they broke and I felt a small gush. I thought I'd wet myself but nope. Then the MW at the hospital ruptured the membranes when I was fully dilated after I had the first urge to push.

My waters broke on the toilet!  Good place for it to happen lol!  I leaked continuously after that and went into labour pretty much straight after with contractions starting.  I wonder how often it does happen in the supermarket lol!  Good luck for your labour and birth

My waters broke on my way back to bed after getting up in the middle of the night to pee. For me it was a bit of a gush.

I was pretty paranoid about a public display too, but at the end of the day it is probably fairly unlikely and hey, its all natural

I do like the onion trick though  Could look odd walking around with a jar in your hand bag though

Haha... the onion trick- thats awesome- thank you for that.... just the humor I needed! I thought today I could carry a water bottle with me and drop that if it happened...
It sounds as if there arent many public displays ... and I know sometimes- or a lot of the time they dotn break at all.
Sarah75 thanks for asking- i didnt know them either.. until now!
my3sons.. i cant believe how lucky you were!! i go enough these days- chances are it will happen there!! haha.

First time around mine were broken late in labour.

2nd time big pop & gush while I was in bed <sigh> it would have been perfect for the supermarket or the warehouse, what a waste!

mine were broken by mw in hosp, I was already 3cm dialated but about to be induced so first thing to go was the waters!
I actually went out every day (I was induced at 41+5) in the hopes that I was tempting fate and things would kick start while I was out, but no luck!

First baby they broke whilst I was on the toilet, which was convenient, and lucky cos it was the massive movie style gush. I was having a contraction whilst it happened and my waters had started leaking 12 hours earlier so not a total surprise.

Second baby I was in the study when they broke, was trying to find my track pants cos I didn't want to wear my shorts to the hospital, again it was during a contraction that they broke but this time it was just the hindwaters (i think that is right, they small amount, rather than the huge bit which I think is the forewaters). It was enough that I had to change but had I had been out and it happened it wouldn't have been enough for anyone else to notice. Mw broke the forewaters (or hind if I have them the wrong way round) once we had been at the hospital a while to try to get things to progress a bit quicker.

Oh I was 34 w 6 days with first baby and 40w 4 days with second.

I lost my plug at exactly 39 weeks (I had done a fair bit of walking whilst shopping in town, not being able to drive I bus everywhere...), anyway I lost it and thought about my waters, anyway they broke at about 9.15 that night, was a gush when I stood up but I only lost half my waters because of bubs being quite engaged and her position, the second half was broken the following morning at about 10am by the mw at the hospital!

I was on the couch and when I stood up is when they broke! And I thought it was a bit odd as "I didn't need to pee!" But then realised I couldn't control it!

I was paranoid about a public gush too! And I'd kept joking around for weeks that they'd broken to dp so when it happened he didn't believe me!

My MIL's broke in an expensive department store in town...

A funny thing just happened to me and as soon as it did, my first thought was about this thread.

I was sitting with my feet up on the couch and my hubby in a rather uncharacteristically charitable act gave me a hottie as I was a bit cold. I put it under my thighs once it had cooled a little. I stood up about 20 minutes later and was completely soaked. Of course it was all over my bottom and thighs. I instantly thought my waters had broken and started wondering why I hadn't packed a hospital bag yet and why was this happening at 29 weeks. I looked at hubby and was just about to discuss a hospital trip asap, when i saw the bemused look on his face and then in his hand was a rather floppy looking empty hottie

What turned out to not be my waters ended up being the little devilish work of my 3 year old, swapping the hottie plugs from our grown up sized ones with her little Charlie and Lola one! Needless to say, not all hotties are the same shape and size and I will be checking this the next time I get cold.

I do wonder though, if this was somehow all a nefarious plan on the part of my husband who took great delight in having me strip in the lounge and waddle off to the bedroom to dry off and change clothes.

He is in the dog house for the time being and I think a pregnancy massage is an appropriate reimbursement for the offense. What do you all think?

I only had pregnancy massage once - during the antenatal class where it was taught so I say go for it!!

But what a shock that must have been!

Mine broke in bed, it woke me up - I thought I'd wet the bed and when I stood up they came in a big gush all over the floor!

That was at 31w so I hadn't thought much about it till then - I was out and about all day almost every day so was pure luck that they broke at night rather than in the posh restaurant I ate lunch in that day

Mine broke at 36 weeks, at work. Thankfully I had just been sitting on the toilet for a pee, went to stand up and a gush came out. I thought "hold on, I've just had a pee?!?!". I work in a open plan office with 16 boys, so carefully manouvered myself around, pulled the only female in the office (my boss) out of a meeting to tell her what happened and that I was waiting for DH to pick me up and take me to hospital. Thankfully none of the guys twigged and I'm so glad I wore black pants that day

With C my waters broke by themselves , I was walking around and around a table at Bethany , and I felt a pop, almost like a snap, im sure I heard it too, and I said "I think my waters just broke "
and because they were only trickling down my legs , everyone was like "are you sure ?"
and they tried to tell me I had wet my pants, it was very annoying !

Ty's I had them broken at 7 cms, when I went into Botany , the old crochet hook , didn't hurt but the water was all warmish and yuck

I hear only 15% of women have their waters break naturally (others have waters broken in hospital) and only a few of those 15% have a big gush. I was quite surprised to hear that because i've been thinking the same thing as you! I really don't want my waters breaking while i'm out >.<

With my first, my waters broke before i had any other signs, then a couple hours later, contractions started. 18 hours later, baby was born =P Luckily, i felt a little odd and went to the toilet where i had a huge gush. Pretty much all in one go (a couple little leaks as baby moved where i had to run back to the loo =P) Fingers crossed, if i get another 'gush' i'm lucky enough to get to the toilet first!

Mine happened along with a huge contraction and the urge to push so it was all on from there.

i was 40 weeks + 1, and we had been constantly busy as the inlaws were down, so had been to the market, berry picking, etc... i was at home and had a sudden urge to finish the babys room, and about 10 minutes later it trickled down my leg.
it wasn't a gush, but it was enough that it took a couple of minutes to realise what it was, and another couple of minutes to put the towel down so I could put a pad on without making a mess!
contractions started about an hour later, and baby came 6 hours later.

I was one of those unlucky ones....just cause my waters broke....didn't bring on labour what-so-ever or me ....induction.....ventouse....and forceps.....before safe delivery of my baby girl

I didnt even go into labour until 2 days later thank fully I didn't know I was in labour until I was 5 cm so labour was nice and quick.

I was in bed too, it started off as a bit of pop and a trickle, then I had maybe a minute before it started to gush (so it would've been highly embarrassing had I been at the supermarket!)

It is unfortunate when the waters break first, cos like others found, the contractions started but labour didn't kick in properly, and hence I needed IV antibiotics and induction etc etc, where as if my waters hadn't broken, things might have progressed ok naturally.

It's definitely not a case of normal = waters break, baby pops out an hour or two later (how little TV/movies prepare you for real life!)
