About 2 weeks after my DD was born she developed a couple of strawberry birthmarks. One is on her right cheek just in front and below her ear about the size of a 20c piece and the other is right under her chin in her neck folds (chubby bubba!) and at first I thought it was a rash as that is just what it looks like!
The one on her cheek- the skin around it, about 5cm by 5cm has swelled outwards (like a toothache) and is quite firm to the touch and is a definate lump. She is not fazed by it if you touch it. I have been to the doctors and they have no idea, have been referred to a peadiatrition but they are known to take forever down here. Has anyone had any experiences with strawberry marks? I know most dissapear over time. Has anyone had any problems with them? Thanks  -------------

Nathan has one at the back of his neck which I've been told should disappear within 12mths. I thought it was a rash at first as well and got an awful fright! It has lightened as time has gone on... we've had no problems at all. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Lily has a tiny 3mm one on her eyelid which isn't noticeable, a 2cm one on her head. No problems so far. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have one on my shoulder blade. At least that is what mum has always called it. I have never had any problems with it, and it is much lighter then it used to be. Just looks more like a dent in my skin. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

DD has a massive one on her leg which is raised. She's also got a small one on her shoulder. They don't bother her at all. Dr said they just disappear which can take up to 2 years. I'm surprised your Dr knows nothing about them, they are so common!
I did read in a magazine where someone's baby had one on her nose and it affected her breathing as it grew so they had to have it removed. I would have it checked by someone who knows about them just to be sure, but otherwise it should just disappear. -------------

A friend from Primary School had one on her nose and had to get it removed due to breathing problems.
Ones across the chest are also a cause for concern, esp on the heart. I forgot to mention Lily also has one on her right foot. About 4cmx2cm. The one on her foot and eyelid are flat, but the one on her head is sort of like a small indent. Also the one on her foot showed up a week after she was born! Mw thought it was odd, but PN didn't have an issue with that. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| Hi, my son Caiden had one on the top of his head which grew and grew and then at 18mths, it slowly started shrinking and then by two it had disappeared. My 4th son Harlow, now has 8 of them all over his body, altho, I don't think they're going to be as big as Caidens was. |

Hi,
My daughter has one of these on her finger(of all places!). I noticed it when she was about 4 weeks old, it was just a light smattering of pinkness then, and it rapidly grew, now its very bulgy and looks like a giant blood blister! They are Strawberry hemangiomas, they appear shortly after birth and grow rapidly, then are usually gone by the time they are 5, they are totally harmless as well! lilla has one under her arm, pretty close to her arm pit. pead is checking it out on monday. mw thinks its fine but wanted a 2nd option as it has a big vein under it. -------------

My girl has one on her left hand - basically covers her hand and slightly at the base of her fingers. She got it at about Day 5, and she is now nearly 18 months. It was really red for a while, but is now slightly lighter, and not as raised as before. My midwife referred us to a paediatrician, who then referred us to Starship just in case. Saw the paedatrician pretty much straight away, and Starship after perhaps a few weeks I think it was - not too long, and once we were there we didn't have to wait at all. I think they just wanted to make sure it looked okay, and they gave us some advice on how to care for it (moisturise it so the skin doesn't dry and then crack and bleed etc). It will apparently fade over time, but for the moment still pretty prominent and she notices it now and touches it. Anyway perhaps you can ask to be referred on, to make sure it is okay. ------------- Mother of Natsumi Sarah born on 23 January 2009 |

DD had a huge one on her neck, which has now gone, she is now 18 months.
DD also has blemishes down her forehead & checks which i noticed alot over summer, they were normally only noticeable in the sun, but i havent noticed them for months now. My midwife told me when she was little that she might have them for life. Sometimes the show more than other times. -------------

Awesome thanks for the replys, Im waiting to see a peadiatrition about it as the lump is getting bigger! Have been googling it and found that its common for them to swell up all funny but it can cause serious problems *sigh, we may have to go to lower hutt to see a specialist there- he is in the listener magazine this week. -------------

DS had/has one on the back of his neck which has faded quite a bit now. A few weeks ago when he had eczema, it became scabby and kind of fell off. Its very pale now and hardly noticeable, its just at his hair line. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

My eldest had one on his forehead. Took a good 2 years to go away. Caused him no harm at all. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

They looks awful but they really are very harmless, unless they block the nose, or cover the eyes(lids).
Isabella's one on her finger is really big and lumpy! and it doesnt effect her from using that finger tip. ------------- |

My son Jacob has one on his neck , its still there but fading ( i just went and had a look at it)
