Hi ladies
I am a first time Mum and I plan to use a combination of cloth and disposable nappies. However I'm a total newbie so at the beginning I think I will just use disposables and then I can make a transition when Im a bit more confident. DH and I are buying everything now before I stop working, so I want to get a good supply of disposable nappies together before the baby is born. Could someone please tell me how many would be a good amount to get? I have heard not to get too many newborn size in case the baby grows out of them really quickly. Any advice on how many to have appreciated. Should I buy a combo of newborn and the next size up too? personally i would be using the money you are getting from working to get trial packs of cloth nappies so you know what you want later down the track because they are such a huge investment (and if you dont like the ones in the trial packs, just sell them on)
but for sposies... most NB are up to 6kg... and DS was 4kg when born, and wasnt 6 kg until a month old - but we had alot of BFing issues... so lost quite alot of weight. but some tipes i do have would be to ask around for peoples favourite brands (we use treasures ultra - hate treasures giggles and the huggies ones with the "poo pocket" type thing are ohk...) and keep your eye out for sales and multibuys - since you have at least 20 weeks before bubs arrives (FXd!!!) i would not buy them normal store price at all. also if they are BFing they poo more often. in hospital we were using cloth flat nappies on DS and i think he was going through about 10-15 nappies a day (depending on if he decided to pee all over the clean one lol) but it might be more than that since he was having trouble feeding? anyway yeah... ask around for fave brands... and only buy on sale. (most supermarets will swap them for next size up if you buy too many of the smaller size. and some supermarkets will let you swap for a diff brand and pay the difference/refund the difference if you decide you dont like them) HTH good luck! |

Rather than stocking up on a whole lot of nappies and then having to store them, I'd be more inclined to get supermarket vouchers so you can get what suits your baby when it does arrive. As like MyLilSquishy said each baby is different and they all suit different nappies.

I would probably just get one or two packets of NB nappies and see what they're like first, if you are starting to run out dp can always go get some more!!
We had 2 boxes of the Huggies NB (she leaked all the damn time even when we did it really tight, same with mw.), Treasures Giggles we didn't like but only had 1 pack, the Ultra we're better and we had 2 packs of those, umm... She outgrew NB nappies around 5-6 weeks (she was only 3kg when born and didn't hit 6kg until 11-12 weeks). But we had her in the next size up of Woolworths Select (crawler) and Treasures Ultra (infant) from 6 weeks plus. Definitely agree with what Kahlia said about supermarkets, specials and swapping. We got 2x NB Woolworth select nappies and she only used 2 pack in a week before she outgrew them but they let us swap it for the next size up!) Also apparently some people don't like using the cheap brands as they automatically think "Nappy rash!" but woolworths one isn't cheap, they're about $20 not on sale! But on sale you can get them for $11-14 usually. Also Budget nappies are really good too and cost almost nothing, but I hated the tabs as they're like tape! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We got 2 of those big boxes of huggies newborn and used 1 1/2 boxes and DS was 4.4kg when born - probably could have moved on to infant earlier and might have helped with poo explosions. Then we got one of those xmas club pak n save cards and put money on it each week with the groceries and decided that was our nappy money. It worked really well since he was born at the beginning of December with xmas expenses around the corner.
I'd say get one big box of huggies to start with and if you want to stock up now get a couple of smaller packs of infant size too. Then before you buy another lot you can check if infant size fits better anyway. I'm guessing you're due around December? The Parent and Child Show was on in November last year and had some good deals for cloth nappies, I went around and bought a few different brands then to trial and made my pick based on that. Also have a look at Trade Me as there's a few brands sold new on there and you can check out what kind of price you might get them for. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Agreed. It would suck to stock up big time on a brand that ends up leaking every time for you. |

Lisa, theres some good threads and tips in the coth nappy section here. We used Moltex eco disposables for a few weeks on Clodagh before moving to cloth full time. When I was pg I just bought lots of different types of cloth naps from Trade Me and then found out through trial and error which we liked using best, whic fitted her best etc. The resale value usually holds pretty well so you needn't worry about losing lots of money. And buying good second hand lets you see what works the best. We had 6 packets of newborn and used them all, then heaps of crawler (DD was near 9lbs to start with).... I was soooo glad we stocked up as then you can get the really good specials. We bought a few different brands and we were lucky by the sounds of it as never had a problem with the fit of any brand (only time we had leakage probs was if the nappy was wrong size). I bought a selection of cheaper ones like giggles, homebrand, pams etc for during the day, and treasures ultra for night.
I agree with Nic - some of the cheaper brands have some good naps - homebrand nappies were great IMO and Pams as well... my daughter never once got nappy rash  I hated the tabs on the budget ones too - annoying to reseal ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

We got through 2 boxes of huggies NB and 2 packs of babylove NB before we had to move to infant, (That's 168 nappies!) but TBH Home Brand and Woolworths select are just as good and much cheaper.
ETA: The little frogs on the Select naps are kinda cute too 
We're now making the move to cloth and I really wish we had bought a few to trial before he arrived, all the different types are doing my head in. It looks like we're going with Real Nappies for daytime though as C is a heavy wetter and can still go 4hrs before he leaks. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
