What do you guys think about big cars like SUV's etc? Some of you must own them so am interested to see your opinions.. reason I ask is coz on another forum (*cough*forum nerd *cough) I go to, there are mainly Americans on there.. have known most of them for a few years now.. so someone bought a huge new SUV and I said "it's nice, good gas guzzler" or something along those lines and it really got everyone's back up! As most of them own them..

We own a people mover (Toyota Lucida) because it's the only car we all fit in together as a family (mum, dad, three kids and gran) AND it has enough boot space to fit a couple of pushchairs and a portacot. I hated it at first, because I moved from my nice sporty three door RAV4 which I loved into the people mover family van. I hate that it costs so much to fill now with the price of petrol, but kinda have to laugh when the middle-aged old men in my neighbourhood pull up at the gas station in their suburban land cruiser (why do you need one if you live on the north shore????) and end up paying twice as much to fill their tanks up.
We've also got a nice fuel efficient second car for hubby to take to work which doesn't cost us as much to fill.

Yeah, a lot of people in the US and Canada have them and don't think twice about it, mind you - a few of my family members back home have them but it's because they have kids etc. I wouldn't mind one because I sort of do like the look, but ultimately couldn't justify the price of petrol if I wasn't driving it for a practical reason.

We have always owned SUV's and V8's and Love them... the gas is just the price you have to pay I guess. I couldn't see myself in a little fuel efficient car now. But I'd never say never!

My dad had one a Nissan Big Horn, but sold it due to the petrol costs. We have a V6 car at the moment and i am sure it eats the petrol cos we are going through a hell of a lot. I want to get a station wagon soon maybe after this bubs is born as it would be so much easier to cart the kids around.

We have a Toyota Emina, which we love. Our "first" car which we bought about 6 months after we got married was a small Toyota Corolla station wagon... it was a 1.5l gutless wonder, but brilliant for around Hamilton and the odd longer trip (would struggle up the Kaimais when fully loaded though!) and roomy enough to fit everything we needed for a two week holiday with two kids.

We bought the Emina off my parents in May or June this year... going from a 1.5l to a 2.4l we expected to pay more for petrol, but really, it hasn't made that much difference to our budget as far as normal use goes.

we have a mitsubishi challenger and i love it. its not a huge suv but not small like a rav 4 or vitara. its the first time ive ever had a car i love. sure the petrol is an issue but it would be with most cars these days. i love being higher and its so easy to get the kids out if plus heaps of boot room. i dont think i would go back to a normal car now.

We just bought a brand new Honda CRV, and I am sooooo in love with my new wheels. It is a 2.4l "SUV", and my honda civic, which we traded in was a 2.5l, so the gas isn't really any difference. Both cost about $80 to fill up (at these prices) my civic was bout $70 - $75 at the beginning of the year. We got it cos it has heaps of boot space, and tonnes of backseat space, including 3 built into the roof thingys for the car seat tethers and a belt type one as well. You can easy fit 2 car seats and a teenager in the back, which we tried. I am super shallow, and image concious (well, not really, but what I am going to say next will sound that way)when we needed a bigger vehicle for our expanding family, I stated I would rather have a bike and 2 seats than a van or a wagon (unless it was an audi..)not to offend anyone, but I guess I never got over selling the MX5 dream for a 4 door sedan when I got preg with Jake...I wanted styley and sporty as well as practical, and the RAV4 4 doors, my first choice, too small! anyhow. Yep, I guess we have an SUV sort of, but not a real gas guzzler (although hubbys falcon futura is a guzzler..)

Hope I didn't offend you wagon/Emina/estima owners....didn't mean it that way, also didn't mean to sound skitey about new car either.... I am just soooooooooooooo in love with it. Only had it a month.

Annie my sister has a CRV and she loves it.

Willie has a tank. A Nissan Safari 7 seater but really you should just call it a tank. It's a diesel, so pretty cost effective, but I hate driving it coz it's so big and clunky. Suits him tho coz he is a truck driver and likes to own the road. It atually gives me the heebies when he drives my little car coz he's not used to autos, and not used to being so low to the ground.

I'll bravely say it(and please don't be offended)....I am not a fan of the big SUV's/4WD's etc...only because I find so many of the drivers horrible, bullying and generally intimidating (I'm sure no one on here is like that though! )

I've got a Holden Vectra which I'm really happy with and the gas consumption is awesome (I use about $65.00 per fornight!) so I'm in no hurry to upgrade!

If I could have any car for free I would have the new range rover.... OMG I know it is totally over the top and I dont think I would ever spend my own money on one (as if I would ever have that much for a car but hey!) but my boss got one a few months back and when I drove in it I was likE WOW!!!! THIS MUST BE THE CAR THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF!
But since I cant afford one and most likely never will I will have to carry on pretending that I really dont like them and wouldnt drive one if you paid me LOL! ...

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emma, those Safari things are HUUUUUUUGGGEEE, I once had to back one out of our drive so I could get out, and holy crackers it was like driving a bus, I HATED it.
Paws, no offence taken! It has to be said, though, ours isn't a remuera taxi, though, we bought it for economy (I only fill once a month) and towing the boat down the marlborough sounds, you need an AWD or 4WD as some of the roads are pretty yuck, especially if you get car sick like me! and it still fit into my looks sporty criteria...

Ugh. Hate people movers! Sorry, mateys!
But then my ideal car would be any old lady miniature car (so long as it had a bit of grunt!) - but then I have 3 little kids and loads of kid crap, so I have a station wagon, which I'm not proud of, but it does the trick!
Nope, I make no sense at all!
Signing off now back into my own crazy world

LOL Nikki - a bus???

And Paws - I know what you mean about 4WD drivers - Willie is a road hog Comes from spending 60 hours a week driving a 46 foot truck and trailer - I guess when he's in his truck he kind of does own the road. But I do have to keep him in check when I'm in the car with him.

And as for icecream, caramel all the way - although miss Maya is a big gumdrops fan...
