I am going to get a rewards chart set up for Ella to encourage her to help a bit around the house (e.g tidy up her toys, put her clothes back in her room etc) and was wondering what others did for Rewards charts. Any creative ideas for designing the chart? I was thinking of using stickers for every good deed and then after a certain amount of stickers she could pick a treat from the jar (biscuit,marshmallow etc). ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

Pick one behaviour you want to work on and have a chart for that- pick something that is objective not subjective so everyone is on the same page as to what is worthy of a reward - eg- Ella gets a sticker when she tidy her toys before bed, and not 'when Ella is good she gets a sticker.
Start with a small number of stickers (like 5 ) = reward, so that the goal is not too far out of reach so they loose interest. I tried not to use unhealthy food as a reward, instead would get Isla a small gift- like a pack of crayons, some people let the child pick somehting from $2 shop. |

I've been thinking about doing this recently too. I was wondering about just printing, cutting out and laminating some kind of little shape or thing Ollie is into at the moment (mostly vehicles!) and then sticking velcro dots on the back so that they are reusable. If I do trucks and things then I might just make a road or carpark or something for them to be stuck on to as the 'chart'. What is Ella keen on? You could create a flower with a long stem that she could attach leaves or petals to, or a ladybird you could put spots on, or a fairy wand that could have little stars around it...? I think just about anything could be adapted. The other thing I had thought about was making my chart a bit more specific (haven't got to the detail point yet) and creating a wee list of chores that he can start doing (with help). Things like putting away toys, putting clothes in the laundry basket etc. Then he can see quite clearly what he is getting the star for. Oh and I might be a mean mummy but I hadn't even thought about there being a treat at the end. I figure at two the treat is getting the star (or whatever) in the first place! |

I actually was just having this discussion with a publice health nurse and her advice was to have a chart and to give a little treat (eg a trip to the pools) after about a week and a big treat after four (eg a trip to feed the ducks or something). The big one has to be a huge deal to them and once they have earnt it it can't be taken away (even if their behaviour is bad). Try not to use food for treats.
We have a pin board here, I got one from the warehouse and put stickers on paper and cut them out and then put pins through them. The kids get to chose what picture they want when they are good. |

We got Samantha to pick something she wanted that was reasonably priced from a toy catalogue, then we copied the picture so it was bigger and cut it into shapes. She is slowly re-building the picture in her special scrapbook by doing things around the house etc. When the picture is complete we will go out and buy it for her  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

thanks for the suggestions.
I ended up finding a website with printable reward charts on it (would post a link but I am probably not allowed to anymore), so got her to pick out 2 different charts (my little pony and Dora) and am going to use 1 for bedtime and the other for tidying up. the site also had free printable stickers so she picked out some stickers to put on the chart. For the bedtime chart when she gets half way (7 stickers) she gets a new pair of PJs and then at the end a small toy and for the tidyup chart she can earn a dora sticker book. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |
