Looks like family are coming again this year so are currently looking at options to appeal to everyone.

Paihia was suggested but apparently it's not 'beachy' enough to some of the family

Can anyone suggest anywhere else up there?

Coopers beach, which is up further north, closer to ninty mile beach. Russell has a couple of nice surfy beaches.

Cooks Beach, Karikari Peninsula has accommodation on both sides.

Depends on whether your looking for a camping holiday or more substantial accommodation.

You can do the dolphin swims from Paihia, there is also trips to Russell.

Coopers Beach is lovely but very quiet. Paihia is definitely beachy enough in my opinion - went there on my honeymoon and there is SO much to do to keep everyone happy including boat excursions, historical places to visit, bushwalks, beach, restaurants/cafes... and you can visit places nearby such as Kerikeri or Russell.

Depends how much you wana spend on accom and how beachy you want there are plenty of campgrounds/cabins and motels and stuff, but youlld wana book your accom quick because they all fill uo pretty fats around here espicially paihia, Taurikura or oakura are quite nice too, alot of people rent their houses out over that period too if you wanted a homely place to stay

not beachy enough? wtf are they on!
Paihia is ALL beach. like, theres a good few km's of beach. Nice safe swimming for kids as well.
I'm from Kerikeri which is 25mins from Paihia and I highly reccommend it.

Theres also a beach called Matauri bay up there - about 45mins north of Kerikeri. Its a MASSIVE beach and theres a hotel/camping ground there.
Coopers beach etc is alright, it's pretty packed out at that time of year tho, you'll just get tourists from Auckland annoying you all day :P
I say go Paihia. Its so nice and laid back.

MissAngel you are from Kerikeri!?! I live in Kerikeri
It entirely depends on what you want to do on your holiday. Paihia/Kerikeri are great if you want things to do during the day other than chilling out and sitting on the beach. Our favourite beach up here for holidays is Tauranga Bay, but it is about half an hour from Kerikeri and 45 minutes from Paihia. There is a great campground right on the beach, its stunning. Matauri Bay and Te Ngaere Bay are also really nice.
If you want to stay in Kerikeri, we are thinking about renting our house out in Kerikeri 4 bed 2 bath 2 living area 3 year old house right in the centre of kerikeri
If you need some ideas or help with anything, feel free to PM me

Matauri bay? That's close to the Rainbow Warrior isn't it?
Prerequisites for the overseas family is good weather and long white beaches. Prerequisites for DH and I is accessible diving so we can take advantage of the babysitting. haha!

Thanks for the suggestions I shall look into them.
Opononi has been suggested but I'm not sure if they realise how remote it is

We had 5 days in Paihia last October and it was beautiful! Loved it. The rest of the country was miserable and freezing but Paihia and Russell were perfect :)
