Subject: Cough when pregnant

I have had a cough for a week now. At first it started off just sore and dry but now it's gone to my chest, Im wheezing when I breathe and coughing up flem (sorry if TMI) and I suspect there might be an infection or something more going on than just a cough.

I went to the chemist on Wednesday to see if there was anything I could take and they advised me against just about everything because of the risk/things not being proven to be safe. So Ive just had some lozenges that are honey and blackcurrant juice, nothing else in them, but it's not really helping.

Normally if I had a cough like this I would go to the doctor but I don't want to go to the doctor only to be told there's nothing they can do because I'm pregnant.

What should I do? Can you take antibiotics when pregnant? Is there anything the doctor can do?

Thanks for your help

hey Lisa, I've had a bad cough/cold for over 2 weeks now, I feel your pain!! I went to the doctor last Monday and have been given a course of amoxycillan which is meant to be totally safe during pregnancy. Not that they have really helped lol! But definately go to the doctor - my mw told me to as she didn't want me to end up in hospital with pneumonia!

Thanks Kelly

I went to the doctor today and turns out I have a chest infection, so they gave me amoxycillan too. She was a little grumpy with me that I didn't go earlier lol. Silly chemist telling me not to.

She said it's safe during pregnancy so I hope that answers any questions anyone else has about that! Better safe than sorry (but the $62 weekend fee was painful lol)

I had a cough for almost 2 months... my doc couldnt work out why... had chest infection when first found I was UTD but that went away...but obviously not completely...

you are lucky to be able to take amoxycillin...my file says my allergic to penicillin so was out of luck...

if the antibiotics dont work then try getting an inhaler with use flixotide...that is what finally worked for me

good luck!!

Ive also had quite a nasty cough went to the chemist where there is also a natural specialist who gave me "kiwiherb organic herbal chest syrup with manuka honey" its in a blue bottle with a green lable it tastes like absoulute crap but did seem to work really well, Have also used it for Emily its safe from 3 months onwards. Was $20 for 100ml
Dose have the usual consult your profesional in pregnancy on the lable but all seems to be fine here.

ug poor you, being sick while preg - I've had a sore throat for over 2 weeks now but my doc says it's viral so I just have to suck it up!

definitely follow up on it if the antibiotics haven't worked by the end of the prescription.

Your midwife can prescribe for you while pregnant also - saves you a docs fee

There are other antibiotics out there for people allergic to penicillin, like erythromycin. DH is also allergic.

Hopefully the antibiotics will do their thing quickly, but I just wanted to add that there have been some stories in the news lately about how honey is more effective than over-the-counter cough medicines at treating a cough - high UMF manuka honey has particularly high antibacterial properties.

Manuka honey, diced garlic, and lemon juice in hot water is really good.

Hey :o) I had a sinus and chest infection for 3-4 weeks at about 10wks. I went to the doc twice and had two sets of antibiotics... totally safe for pregnancy.
Also took the natural manukau honey remedies for it from health store...
Rest up and get healthy :o)

This stuff is awesome. i used it while pregnant with #2 and now use it with both kids. I found it worked really well but yip, tastes hideous.

Comvita now do a herbal cough mix and they also have great lozanges that work really well.

So a week later after getting the course of antibiotics for my chest infection, Im hardly any better...

Ive been having honey lozenges, have taken it easy all week on holidays and I am still wheezing and coughing and feeling terrible.

Should I be going back to the doctor for another course of antibiotics? Im scared to take any more than I need to take...

Is it just harder to get over this sort of thing when you're pregnant?

i have found every little illness has lasted a bit longer while preg - don't forget you are immune suppressed while preg (which is why they recommend you have the flu jab etc) so it makes sense that you might get sick more easily and take longer to heal.

If it were me I would go back to the drs - there are other things they can give you to clear things up. I had a chest infection while preggers and was given antibiotics, steriods and an inhaler. Although I wasn't in a good way and was having such trouble breathing. Best to get these things checked so they don't turn nasty while you've got your little bub on board.
As for things at home - its honey and lemon drinks and I found steamy showers helped me breathe.
Hugs - hope it all clears up soon.

Asthma?
Pg kicks off my asthma and I end up with a cough that won't go away.

It is usually at night when i am relaxed, or after exercise and I am puffing or when I go in the cold air.

Inhalers work for me to ease the cough.

Definitely go back to your doc hun. PG isn't the time to self-diagnose or self-treat and if it hasn't responded to a week of ABs, they need to review what's actually going on.
