Hi there,

We're on day 2 of trying cloth - we are doing this part time at the moment to see if it will work for us, and if so we'll eventually probably switch over fulltime.

So currently we have 5 pocket nappies and many more inserts. We are placing 2 inserts into the pocket and find theyre fab. Big bonus, is that so far DD's poops have stayed in the nappy - which hasnt happened with the disposables hehe.

But on that - DD is EBF so has the good ole mustary runny poops. Whats the best way to clean the nappy as you dont have a "poo" as such to go into the toilet.
Do you tend to soak it all, then throw into a wash, or scrub then wash?

Cheers!

I used to rinse off the worst under the laundry sink (which with hindsight wasn't the best thing to do ), and then dry-pail and wash in the machine when I had a load. Someone on here a while ago suggested keeping a bucket either in the laundry tub or bath that you can rinse the worst off into with the running tap, and then later flush that down the toilet. Most nappies are not recommended to be soaked, but rather stored in a dry bucket with a lid to stop smells.

It gets so much easier when you can use liners, and the poo is actually vaguely solid!

Yeah, I've learnt to stop rinsing in the laundry tub too since Cooper's aren't actually runny as it lingers behind!

Some people flush the toilet so the water runs over them, didn't work when I tried that for us though.

Hi,
yes, that great idea to used bucket to rinse off with running tap...and than flush down to toilet.
(unfortunately the house we are renting has a laudry sink but no tap there?...so silly) .

I have to say i tried flushing toilet and holding a fleece soiled line in the water flow, but it doesnt always work that great....
so, thanks for the question Kimnthe kids, and the answers!!

guess, bucket in the bath will be my "new good friend" cha :-)

When DD was a several-times-a-day baby each poo was small enough not to need rinsing. When she became a twice-a-week baby, I'd rinse immediately in the laundry tub. Why is the tub a bad idea? I rinse it out after...

I use disposable liners, so i dont have to worry about poo... if it's a nice solid poo, i just flush it, otherwise we flush the liner away (they are cheap ones so i dont think they are meant to be flushed).
I was using cloth liners, and I would actually use toilet paper and pick the poo off it, then just leave it till i washed the nappies.
It is supposed to be bad to soak the nappies as it makes them less absorbent. And I would definatly NOT soak them in napisan or washing powder.

The only issues we had rinsing down the laundry sink was as chelle said above - little bits started getting stuck! But when it really is runny BF poo, there isn't an issue with putting it down the laundry sink, as that waste water gets treated at the same place as the toilet water.

Sweet cheers guys - yeah wouldnt be a problem if it were actually a poo so to speak, but the liquid ones ya get at this age are a right pain!

I tell ya what tho, im SOOOOOO impressed at the sun's ability to take a stain and get rid of it.

GO SUN! THUMBS UP TO YOU!! :))

Moonlilght works too!! It's the UV that bleaches the nappy!!

As for rinsing the NB/young poops.... I wet pailed the dirty ones till it became more "compact" hehe

I do a bit of both Kim, I rinse the worst ones (when she does one only once a day) at the laundry sink but I also have a disposable liner to catch the slightly thicker/mustard seed sort've bits, then dry pail and put it through on a soak then wash with extra rinses cycle in the machine. I put liners in all my cloth nappies so if she only does a little incidental poop I can just chuck it and there will just be that little yellow stain but no actual poop in the nappy.

I don't rinse my nappies before washing, but like T-Rex said, DS is pooing three-four times a day and we still have the runny BF poos at the moment so there really isn't anything to rinse.

Guess I'll just scrape and flush when they change consistency.
