Can someone please explain the types of nappies and how they all work. Also which you prefer. I have read a few sites about them, but somewhere in the talk of pockets inserts liners all in ones i just get lost. who would have though it could all be so complicated

Pocket nappy: A 2 piece nappy with a cover and an insert (the absorbent part). The cover is made with a waterproof outer and a stay-dry inner which creates the pocket. The insert goes inside the pocket.

All in one: A 1 piece nappy it has the absorbent part is attached to the waterproof outer so no assembly required

Fitted nappy: is an absorbent nappy made to fit the baby it doesn't have a water proof layer so will need a cover

Prefold: Nappy needs to be folded up and placed inside a cover.

Cover: The bit that goes over a nappy to keep it waterproof.

Liner: goes inside the nappy to protect it from poo and to make it easier to clean can be flushable or reusable.

Hope that makes sense!

there are some great stickied topics on here explaining the types and the snazzipants website has a great comparison chart too.

For preference (as EsmesMum did a good job of explaining)

I have pockets as they are the cheapest option and they work alright but require a fair amount of time to stuff them with the inserts.

I have one All in one and its really nice and easy BUT you can't vary the absorbancy.

And I have as a night nappy some Snap in one nappies. Oh snap in ones are a cover with domes on the inside to attach boosters to, they come with the boosters though sometimes you need to buy extra for more absorbancy.

It seems really daunting at first and everyone has different favourites. The snazzipants website is really handy to get an overall idea of things. Also get some recommendations from people you trust then buy one or 2 of a few different types (2nd hand) to try before committing to lots of one type.

For starters I just used prefolds with super brite covers. A cheapish yet very effective way of getting into cloths. I'd probably still use this to pad out my other nappies except I don't have any in the medium.

I love pocket nappies such as Fuzzi bunz/Honey Childs and Ecobubs wool pockets. I've accumulated a reasonable stash off Trademe so I have 3 days worth so I don't have to use the dryer much. Love love love them.

I don't mind All in Ones but find they take too long to dry and you need a cover over most of them. I'll probably end up selling the few I have to buy some more Ecobubs for night time.

I really like the trimness of the Itti Bitti's but they don't last as long as some of the other nappies.

Once you get started it's not so daunting.

As far as preference goes it really is a personal thing. Everyone has their own opinion on it and of course it is often governed by your child too, how they wet, their size and shape.

Best thing would be to try get hold of a trial pack for when bubs arrives so you can work out what is best for you.

For me personally I prefer either snap-ins or AIO. I find pockets too bulky.

I'm a pocket fan too. Fuzzi Bunz all the way!

Pockets are a bit bulkier and they need to be "stuffed" but the big bonus is they last a long time between changes and they are super quick drying.

I totally understand about it being a bit daunting. I didn't have a clue when I first started investigating but as soon as I bought them and started using them I was hooked!! Much easier than I thought. And like all the other mamas say in this thread, you become a total convert to whatever you pick!

Good Luck! You have a bit of time to mind the perfect option for you.

I love Itti Bittis Snap In Ones, Love the way you can vary the absorbency and are trim.
It is very daunting, and I bought one of heaps of different types to work out what was going to be the best option for us... Then just sell what you dont like/doesnt work for you and buy more of what you do like

thanks everyone for your help, after some research and some trips to the shop I am going to try the baby first nappies. I like that the insert covers most of the nappy on the top instead of in the pocket, so am slowly buying some up off trademe.

you may want to consider getting a hire kit instead of buying up big on one brand. quite often what works for one baby wont for another...

EsmesMum did such a good job of explaining that I'm not going to add to her explanations.

As to preferences, I love prefolds and covers and think they're a great place to start. My favs are www.realnappies.co.nz - Real Nappies . Have you looked at those yet?
