I have had a really awful night, just what I need when I'm this busy at work!

4 times last night when I fell asleep after eventually getting comfortable (SPD doesn't make for good sleeping) I stopped breathing. It felt as though my throat closed up and as I had a stuffy nose I couldn't breathe through there either. I would try to draw in breath to cough to clear my throat but couldn't - my airway was just completely closed.

As soon as I kinda woke up enough to register it and sat up, the airway re-opened and I would start gasping for air and my heart was pounding really hard and fast like I'd had a big fright.

By the third time it happened I was getting scared to go back to sleep! Theoretically I know if I stop breathing I should just automatically wake up again but I'm a bit worried that I just won't wake and suffocate in my sleep!

I haven't been sick lately and have never experienced anything like this. Does it sound pregnancy related? I've been getting very breathless lately but this isn't breathlessness!

I'm no expert so will just throw a couple of ideas out there....

http://www.babycenter.com/0_sleep-problem-sleep-apnea_7547.bc - Sleep apnoea

or maybe anxiety?? but perhaps not if you were asleep when it happened.

Wow it does sound like sleep apnoea! Thanks for that link! As far as I know I don't snore, never have - but DP is no help because he snores like a hibernating bear and never wakes during the night so can't tell me if I've started.

I doubt it would be anxiety, I've been very calm of late (if you discount the hormonal mood swings)

I had better mention it to the MW!

You might not normally snore, but I think pregnancy does a lot of weird things to you like that. A lot of people have told me they snored like tractors when they were pregnant! Not sure if I do - my husband wouldn't woke up if a train came barrelling through the house.

It sounds a lot like sleep apnoea - definitely mention it to your midwife, you don't want to be oxygen-deprived!

Are you sleeping on your back? If so the weight of the baby can squash your lungs and make it hard to breathe. I would def talk it over with your midwife though.

Rachaels: my GP gave me a saline nasal spray with budesonide in it. It completely unblocked my nose.
