Hi I was just wondering if any of you had had the swine flu vaccine in your 1st trimester. I still havent seen my LMC as am only quite early days...

nope. from what i remember its recommended you wait till your in your 2nd tri before getting it.... -------------

No, it is recommended in your second tri.

When I asked my GP about getting it,she said to wait till I was 12 weeks.
So once I was 12 weeks I went and got it. |

The who is expected to state that there is no pandemic, perhaps you should ask if it's even really necessary, considering how untested the H1N1 vaccine is as well.

Pandemic or not, it is the flu strain that is the dominant one in NZ right now. And it is the flu strain that has much more serious effects on pregnant mums and their babies than the flu strains that usually circulate. ------------- DS1 July 2007 DS2 Nov 2010 http://lilypie.com">

I felt it would be irresponsible to not pass the information on. I'm not telling her not to have it done I am suggesting she should look into it before having it done, that is all.
And yes some people are well informed but sadly the vast majority are not and wouldn't even think for one second that our government would be giving out a vaccine that was rushed to market not fully tested because different rules apply under pandemic conditions. |

No it is very interesting thank you all of you. I will phone the Drs surgery tomorrow and see what they suggest. Interesting stuff out there, very conflicting information as always when trying to come up with the answer using the internet!!

I contracted it last year so wanted it ASAP this year, but like the other women had to wait until the second trimester.
So I made myself wait until 14 weeks so we were sitting comfortably in the second trimester

I am generally pro-vaccination (as some of you will know  ), but for the most part, I have always thought flu vaccination was unnecessary, and I have never had one.
However, having just been through the last few days with what I believe is the flu (and I don't say that lightly....I don't believe I've ever had the flu before, and I also think most people who say they have the flu really just have colds ), I would recommend getting it.
I haven't been so sick in a long time, and I believe the fact that my immune system (in particular the innate component which is the first 'part' that fights off viruses) is compromised, as all of our immune systems are compromised during pregnancy, has made a huge difference in how my body has coped. Any help your body can get would be worth it - remember it may not stop you getting the flu, but it will lessen the severity of it. I haven't done research into the particular strains they are vaccinating against this year, so that may be worth doing. From a purely personal perspective, if I could turn back time and go get the vaccine, I totally would - regardless of any conflicting research, I would prefer that than what I've been through these last few days! -------------

I had the flu injection in the first trimester as thats when my work was offering it. I decided to have it then rather than wait as I didnt want to take the risk of looking after people that may have swine flu. The information that I reviewed prior to getting it didnt say not to have it in the first trimester, its one of the medications that you need to decide what is best for you, whether you have it or not and when.
If I had known I wasnt going to be allowed to work then I wouldnt have gotten it as its unlikely Im going to have any exposure to it. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had it at 12 weeks. I decided that the benefits outweighed the (incredibly unlikely) harms. Now that my daughter is here, and flu season has started I'm glad to have the protection, and glad that she is getting it through breastmilk. ------------- www.makedomum.blogspot.co.nz |

I have just had it last week. I wasn't going to have it, but I work as a school teacher and I have had a terrible chest infection and about 4 colds, and a flu did the rounds of my class just recently luckily I did not get it but I don't want to take the risk again. You do have virtually no immune system when pregnant it seems, so what you might not do normally you reconsider in pregnancy. Thats how it was for me anyway.
It is a totally personal choice, for each to make on their own depending on benefits and risks and personal situation. I believe in my job teaching 5 year olds in a low decile primary school I have a high chance of getting sick, so I wanted to protect myself. You should have it in the second trimester though to be safe so if you're really early in pregnancy you'll also need to weigh up whether it's worth getting by the time you are in 2nd trimester or whether we're going to be on our way out of the season. ------------- Me 28, DH 29 DS born 20 Nov 2010 (4 years old) #2 due October 7 http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I had been meaning to get it once out of my first trimester, but you know how it is with unpleasant things. dh is a school teacher and they have had record numbers off sick with the flu in the past week. So will definitely be getting it, as somehow he always manages to get it and pass it on to me. grr at the receptionist at the drs, when I told her I was pregnant she was like, its probably not a good idea. Changed her mind once she checked with the nurse though. |

Just spoke to my MW about it today, she said she just had some extra info, and they don't use the "live virus" in the vaccine so if you have the vaccine you won't get it as such, so it is safer than I thought. She said mortility rate among preg women who get the swine flu, so I think I will be safe and get it this week. I have always been against getting these flu vaccines, but I think given the circumstances, this year I will compromise for me and baby's safety. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I decided to wait until I'd had my baby..Which wasn't long at all. I had it when he was 6wks old. I'm prone to being sick. And I have asthma. So I got it. Theres been a few cases in town and I decided I'd rather get it then not..
But like the others said speak to your GP's office, do a little research and make the decision for yourself

I have never had the flu jab before...I work at the airport dealing with international travelers so never saw the point but when I confirmed my pregnancy my GP suggested I get because it has the swine flu vaccine this year...

Sandie, you can get it in the first trimester, I did as well. If we couldnt then medical professionals wouldnt allow us to, so dont worry. It was recommended to me to get it in the first trimester as I would be exposed to it early on.

I didn't have it... was a conscious decision as I felt it hadn't been tested enough on pregnant ladies.
