Just wondering what others are taking in way of Preggy vitamins..
I'm just taking APO Folic 0.8 which is straight off the chemist shelf. With DS and DD I took Blackmores Pregnancy Gold, however made a discovery last week.
The Pregnancy Gold only has 250mcg of folic acid and says on the pot to only have 1 per day..
??? Supposed to have 800mcg of folic acid a day so would have to take 2 or 3 or these horse pills per day.. ???
Was thinking all the other vitamins in Pregnancy Gold (incl Omega) are great for the baby and considered taking this and the APO Folic 0.8.
That would mean a total of 1050mcg of folic acid per day.. Do you think this would be too much..???

Get folic acid on prescription from your midwife. Only $3 for 3 months supply. I took this (800mcg) along with the preg multi vitamin. MW said it would be fine.

Providing you are eating a well balanced nutritional diet there is actually no need for additional vitamin supplements, they are just a marketing ploy. 800mcg of folic acid is all you need
Of course if you have health issues, diet restrictions, or pregnancy complications like really bad MS you would benefit from taking one and are not going to do yourself or your baby any harm. Although make sure it is a pregnancy specific multivitamin as other normal ones can contains too much Vit A which can have a harmful effect on the baby.
eta - but in answer to your question: No you can't overdose on folate as it is water soluble so any excess you will just wee out However in saying that excess folic acid can mask a VIt B12 deficiency so best just to stick with the 800mcg unless your MW or OB says otherwise.
eta part 2 - sorry for the spiel!

At th start of my pregnancy, I took a woman's multi and then confirmed with my midwife about taking extra folic acid when I realised the recommended dosage. My midwife confirmed having more than the recommended dosage of folic acid isn't a problem.
But -- I agree with Mrs B on whether you need extra supplements at all -- at my first bloods, my iron levels were really high, which can also apparently be a problem. This was from the supplements so my midwife told me to stop taking them. So long as you are eating a balanced diet, you should be fine without extras (other than the folic acid)

I took no supplements - just folic acid. No problems with iron levels or anything.

I dont have anything to add re folic acid but just wanted to say that you should not take a normal multi vitamin. It has too much Vitamin A in it for during pregnancy and can cause birth defects.
