My last dentist was great, but she retired.

I got a recommendation from a friend and went to see this dentist who told me that I needed to have 2 fillings replaced and another new one. I went in to have this done and the dentist only got the two replacement ones done (these took too long) and then made another appointment, which the receptionist later told me was to get two fillings done (WTF?). The dentist had exceptionally poor communication skills, and I really felt like I had no idea what she was doing.

Anyhow I ended up cancelling this next appointment as I couldn't get a babysitter.

I'm getting to the point.... The teeth with the fillings that were replaced now really hurt and are temperature sensitive, when in the past they weren't.

The dentist is a reputable firm who have an 1 year guarantee on their work, but I am not sure if I should go back there. I am worried that she might have overdrilled or something (although I know nothing about dentistry!).

Would you go back and get her to fix it, or cut your losses and go to another dentist?

Go back, and request a senior dentist!

Go back and get it fixed, either with the same dentist if you trust her or a senior dentist. If its a problem with their fillings then they have to fix it for free but if you go to another dentist firm then you'll have to pay to have it fixed.

Or go get a second opinion first?

I agree. They guarantee their work so get your money's worth at least for the work she has done. And then go elsewhere for the other work - it's good to have someone recommended because dentists can be awful, I know...

Go back and see the dentist and tell them you are still in pain. The fillings may just be to high and need some adjustment.
Where abouts in the country are you?

Here we go again, another baby on it's way!
