| Hi there, I have recently found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant. I have found a brilliant midwife. My issue if that she will be away until 1 week before my due date (for about ten days). Im wondering if anyone who haschildren could tell me if this is ok? Or am I going to be stressing and need her around? My mum and Mother in law both live in other parts of the country and I am so nervous at this early stage!!! Any advice would be very welcome! |

This often happens. Most midwives will arrange for you to meet their backup while you are pregnant (particularly if they are going to be away around your DD). This way you can meet someone prior to the birth. Remember the birth is one part of it - there are a lot of antenatal and postnatal visits where you will see your own midwife. ------------- www.makedomum.blogspot.co.nz |

| Mine is going to be away at my due date. For me it doesn't bother me at all but I can see why it would for some. I'm fine with hospital MWs and with the backup and DH. |

Ask about a back up midwife! My midwife told me all the dates she would be away, she had a policy where if she was going to be away around my DD then it was probably better to look for another mw. Although babies can come at any time.
If she has a back up, ask to meet her so you get to know her too! And like bobchannz said the birth is just one part! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I went 10 days over and my MW had booked a holiday for 2 weeks, starting 7 days after my EDD. It was a bit awkward seeing my backup midwife to start with as our first appointment was an internal, but when I went into labour I really didn't care whose hands were where or who was with me as long as DP was within eyesight and I got my baby. In the end I actually liked my backup more, she was easier to talk to  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

She should have a back-up arrangement in place anyway and it's likely that she will be busy or sick at the time of at least one of your upcoming appointments, so you'll meet the back-up then. The mw you have chosen is likely to be away for your birth but she'll be able to do most of your pre and post visits. And if you think she's great, well of course you can have confidence in the back-up that she trusts too. -------------  |

My midwife was away on holiday when I went into labour with my son. I met her back-up midwife during labour, but then she was called away to one of her own clients. So in the end I had a completely random third midwife I'd never met before, and she was actually really good!! -------------
