Jody has been on antibiotics for about 6 weeks (with a break every week or so before the ear infection comes back).
Anyway, her teeth look really terrible! They are really yellow and look like they are going to go rotton, there's nasty dark yellow staining close to her gums that a tooth brush will not take off.
I asked her dr about it and he said the AB's she is on shouldn't stain teeth and if they do, it's only temporary.
Has this happened to anyone else? Will it go away eventually??

My daughter has the same teeth going by your description. She has a condition called enamel hypoplasia which means that her teeth dont have enough enamel. This leads to very sensitive teeth and need treatment and close monitoring due to them being more susceptible to decay.

Is she seeing a dentist yet? If not it might be a good idea to get onto one. Are you in Perth, as i am not sure how it works over there. But here plunket refers them to a dental clinic, this is how my DD was picked up.

ETA: Forgot to say that it can be caused by antibiotic use, especially if they didnt erupt that way.

She hasn't seen a dentist yet, when I showed the dr he wasn't concerned at all, but I think they look really bad.
They looked great until the she started on the AB's and quickly went yuck.
I am not sure how the dentists work here either, just that they are really expensive! But I will take her to see her CHN (like plunket) and see what she says. The CHN always asks about her teeth so I guess it's part of the care she provides.
Interesting about your daughter having sensitive teeth, Kicker, as Jody had some icecream a while ago and it made her cry and she refuses to have it now.
Thanks everyone, hopefully we can get it sorted.
Hopefully the ear infections go away for good too!

I have heard that constant antibiotics can cause yellow teeth. I don't know the science behind it it is just one of those things I have heard along the journey of having kids.

My son was prescribed iron and on that it said it stains teeth and to use baking soda to brush the teeth, stains grey rather than yellow though. Maybe you could ask the pharmacist to see if it's something similar with the antibiotics?

That's a good idea, I am surprised I hadn't even thought of asking a pharmasist! Thanks two_boys!
Kiwi2, there are so many random child related facts floating around in my head, I have no idea where I got the AB's/yellow teeth idea

My yellow teeth are caused by constant AB's when I was a kid. I'm 30 now, no amount of whitening gets rid of it.

MissAngel , did you have the AB's with you baby teeth or were you still having them when your adult teeth came through? I am hoping that her adult ones will be fine.
Now I remember where I heard it from!!! Duuuuuuuhhhhhhh!! My mum said my sister's teeth went bad from ABs, she had to get her 4 top front ones taken out and she looked like a tiny vampire until her adult ones came down! Her teeth look fine now

What ABs was she on?

I also have yellowed teeth from constant ABs as a child - both as baby teeth and adult teeth, but I assume as soon has her baby teeth fall out and she gets her adult teeth she should be fine - assuming she doesnt continue needing ABs.
Im worried my older girl will end up with yellowing of her teeth as she has the same kidney condition I have

First lot was Amoxicylin (sp?), then cephalexin, now she has been on Amoxicylin mixed with clav AC (which is called Curan Duo) for the last 3 or so weeks.
The yellowing started with the amox, I asked DR about it when she was on the ceph and he said neither the ceph or amox stains teeth and the staining will be temperary (yeah, it doesn't stain, but he knows all about it..... the Drs here are not great). Since being on the Duo they have gone from yellow to crusty and gross.
Muz, I hope your daughter's teeth are ok

I used to have pencillin when I was little too as I had chronic toncilitis (sp), until I had them out at 9, and I have marked teeth. Whenever I get ill or feeling run down, I get lines across my top teeth. My mum was told it was due to the abs too.
I hope Jody gets better soon with the ear infections and you get some answers for her teeth.

I had them (and I just checked in my plunket book) from 3 months old - well past when the book stopped. Mum said I would have been at least 10. I was a very sick child. My poor mum!

Amber, start using adult toothpaste on her teeth. The children's ones don't have enough fluoride to harden the enamel.

Alia has hyperplastic dental enamel as well, we are unsure of the cause, could have been in utero or it could be ab's but she didn't have many.

She's had her 2yo molars coated & some of her new adult teeth coated. Not sure how old Jodi as your tickers aren't working, but if she's got those molars, go get them coated to help them as those teeth are for life.

I hope bubs gets over the ear infections soon, my wee man has had them off and on for the past 4 months (he's 8 months now) and he's been on ABs since too...at the moment he only has 4 teeth but it's a worry if the ABs are having those side effects...I'll ask my GP about it next week...hope you find a solution

Thanks AandCsmum, I have always used only a teeny amount of child's toothpaste for her, I will use adult stuff now. Jody is 2 in Nov and she hasn't got those molars yet. I didn't realise they are permanent ones, good to know!

4thtymlucky, Jody's teeth went yellow pretty quickly so hopefully if your DS's teeth look ok so far then it won't affect him in the same way, it may be just a few people that get it.

OMG, it is so hard to find out about anything medical over here no one seems to know how the system works! Soooo looking forward to coming home to nz where it's all straight forward

My sister was on ABs for all her early life and her teeth were severely stained. She had a very expensive teeth whitening procedure done abotu 5 years ago and the look good now.

For ear infections food sensitivities are a big cause. Removing dairy products can help and if you don't see an improvement try removing wheat, eggs and chocolate. Sugar should be avoided cause it suppresses the immune system.Put her on probiotics to help even out her guts again. Instead of antibiotics try dripping warmed garlic oil into her ear.

I had recurrant ear infections as a child due to food intolerances and my mum used garlic oil 99% of the time and it worked 99% of the time too. Worth a try coz all those ABs can't be good for her little body.

Thanks Babe, those are some wonderful tips Her latest lot of (mega strong) ABs will be finished in the next day or so, I will hunt down some garlic oil and cut back on the wheat (she was wheat intollerant until about 14 months).

Babe, maybe a silly question, but is there actual oil made from garlic or do I just use garlic infused olive oil or something??
