Is everyone in CHCH alright? Man, I woke up at 4.15am and was like WTF. Matt said it was an earthquake, I grabbed the baby, he grabbed Thomas and I honestly almost shat. Thats the most scary thing i've ever experienced!

I hope everyone is alright! I am in Auckland so didn't feel it, but I am at work monitoring server alerts and knew something major must of happened when all of the CHCH networks went down.

Scary stuff!!

omg that was frightening! I woke up just before it struck cause the dog came running into our room and hid under our bed then everything started smashing etc. I jumped out of bed straight away and ran into Isla's room (opp our room) and grabbed her out of her cot and slid under the bed with her cause I figure it was the safest place to be cause it's a lot stronger than our house! Everything in our kitchen is smashed to pieces and our micro system stereo fell off the shelf and onto the computer but it didn't damage it thankfully. I've put Isla back to bed now but I'm too afraid to sleep. I just want to stay near Isla incase another big one hits. I just wish these aftershocks would stop! Hopefully the worst of it is over.
Hope everyone else is OK

I was totally freakin! I've never felt one that bad I ran straight to the girls room and Lay over them with Jess. We're out in Southshore so all the sand helped cushion us a bit. We are one of the few that still have power :) I hope everyones ok. My parents just showed up saying roads are cracked and some buildings in town have collapsed! Made us realise how unprepare we are if something bigger happened.
I was scared to sleep too Lisa. We are right on the end of a spit and all I could think about is what if a freakin tsunami follows!

We are seriously unprepared too! A friend just txt and said to fill the bath with water to keep as drinking water incase there are more water outages

Things seem to have settled down. I've finally stopped shaking thank goodness! I've been white as a ghost all day just cause I was so terrified. Haven't had a decent aftershock in a while so here's hoping we are past the worst of it... although they reckon it's likely that we will get another one around 6 on the Richter scale! I hope not!
Still can't believe it has happened, and can't get over the damage in town! No major damage in our area altho a big brick fence about 4 doors down was flattened.
And what horrible news about the fatal plane crash in fox glacier! Tragic day in NZ!

Very sad to see 9 people have died in the plane crash. Not a good day in NZ thats for sure.

I didn't find out about the quake till around 11am, I hadnt had the tv on or the computer. Went to check FB and saw my cousin in CHCH having a status about the earthquake, I was like OMG!!

First thing I did was turn on the TV then call my cousin, she, hubby and baby are all safe.

I hope all you OB families are safe and well.

well last night had to be the scariest night of my life , i was in the deepest dream but in my dream someone was violently shaking my bed , i woke up to dp screaming "Julz- Earthquake" i ran into amelias room ,she started screaming. the whole house was swaying and was so loud and scary .  i just sat in bed with amelia for about 30min, she was very upset and i couldnt really calm her, power was out so i coldnt even give her a warm bottle to calm her down  , Rang all the family , they were all fine , i went outside at about 5am to find my whole driveway was cracked and gaping in places, theres this sludge stuff thats taken over my wee garden (about mid calf deep) , i went down the drive and everyone on my wee street was out and talking to each other , taking photos etc ( i live in a tiny culdesak with about 15 houses). im in avonside which is one of the worst affected areas. my whole street was cracked and you can see the whole "ripple" movement made by the earthquake , one of my neighbours annonced she had a gas stove so i was able to warm amelias bottle ( this was the best thing ever , such a releif with a screaming baby wanting a bottle ). when i went back inside and it was light i realised that there are cracks all throughout my house , its also on a lean and theres a massive gap between the conrete wall in the garage and the house so it looks like the whole house has moved. I feel very sorry for my landlord as he just owns this investment property ( that i rent) and his own house which is in darfield ( the epicentre of the earthquake) , his own house is very damaged , chimney went right through the middle of the house. think someone will be coming to look at my place early next week and assess what needs to be done . christchurch has a very eiry feel tonight , we still have no water so cant even use the loos or have baths or anything , i heard a rumor that in my area it may be 2 weeks before we have water!!!! all the streets are cordend off and if we want in or out we have to talk to the police that are on patrol .

im absolutly amazed there has been no fatelities.  I feel very thankful . my motherly instincts definatly went into overdrive the min i woke upto the earthquake , its amazing how fast i got amelia out of her cot and in my arms .

thanx :) we are staying home at the moment as we have power , just no water , going to take showers and grab water from friends and familys houses , we are lucky , we know alot of people as chch is me and DP's home town so lots of people to help out if we need it . Landlord is going to come out when he can , his own house is alot worse off than my one ( his is completly inanhabitable ) . theres a few issues at mine , the driveways a complete mess , a bit worried we wont be able to use it soon as the gaps seem to get bigger with every aftershock, we cant open the front door , cant close the back door , and some surface cracks on the walls , more of the worry is the structual damage you cant see because we are pretty sure the whole house has moved , i guess the assesser will let us know how bad it is , hopefuly its only minor damage . i just felt another aftershock . theres been so many , pretty scary really , i would like the dam aftershocks to stop . i slept like a baby last night tho , i was exhasted from the day . main worry today is all the winds throwing debry around . i work in the cbd and amelias preschool is also in cbd  so def no work for me tomorow .

What a day yesterday! Never been in a quake that big, it lasted for ages and all we could hear was the rumbling and things crashing about and smashing.

We got power back on at 5.30 last night but our water supply out here is contaminated and we're being told to conserve water as much as poss. Fortunately DH filled the bath yesterday around 7am so we've been boiling the water from that.

Thankfully bubs is staying put - did wonder if he/she thought it was me trying to shake him or her into making an early apperance in the world!

Had a few wicked aftershocks that woke us up last night and some good ones again this morning. Some just seem to be noise and no real shaking. Feels quite surreal when you see the pics on the news.

still no water at my place , my poor sister doesnt have water or power and has a 5month old baby , shes determined not to leave the house tho , i might just have to try drag her out tomorw and make her stay at mine .

thought id put a couple pics up of my house and neighbourhood ,

this is my back yard - there is ussualy flowers under all that clay/mud stuff, you can just see them peeking over the top

my street

at the end of my street - the whole earth has opend up

a 30 sec walk from my house

the end of my driveway shortly after the quake - its a lot worse now thanks to the aftershocks , barely able to drive in it

Far our Julz, its just crazy!! We are on the other side of town so suffered no damage, just a few loose bricks in the chimney and loss of power. My IL's live in Avonside and they have a little bit of damage. We went to visit them on Sat and had a walk round Avonside drive. It just seems so unbelievable!

All I keep thinking is thankfully it happened in the early hours of the morning and not 12 hours later, As frightening as it was been woken up and then having no power etc, as there probably would have been some fatalities then seeing as it was such a nice day on Sat so there would have been lots of people out and about in town.

I really feel for those people whose places and businesses have been destroyed, the likes of those in Kaiapoi, Avonside and Darfield.

Julz, I know you probably know this, but it's surprising a lot of people don't. But that 'sludge' in your back yard is probably sewage. My dad empties septic tanks and he says it just looks like a grey/brown sludge. So if you go out in it try not to touch it with your hands or anything, wear gumboots, but basically avoid it as much as possible!
A little bit paranoid but as Dad says you never know what illnesses people in your area could have, and what could be in there, legionaires disease etc.
Especially don't let Amelia near it, and if you've been near it try and wash (if you can) with disinfectant or something.....

Sorry, I'm a bit paranoid about that stuff, as a lot of people don't realise what it is a lot of the time, and if you don't realise, there can be some terrible consequences! Dad had to clean up a burst pipe down here for the council one day, it had all run under someones house, and he spent about $500 on HUGE big drums of disinfectant to throw under their house after he'd cleaned it all up... They had wee kiddies and a dog and hadn't realised what it was until the neighbours come over and told them!

thanks for that moo-cow , we assumed it was something like that so have stayed clear of it , its quite thick and "clay" like so think it could be something to do with the fact the river is so very close to our house .

Yeah sounds bout right Dad gave me a bit explanation about it coming up through the water table or something, and the fact it doesn't look like sewage cos of all the grey water (shower, washing machine, dishwasher etc) but I kinda tuned out

Sorry, just wanted to be safe than sorry, would hate for someone to not realise and get sick

These aftershocks are driving me crazy.

Julz have you taken Amelia into the doctors or hospital. At least that way she might get some clean water and you might be able to give her a shower or sponge bath

I feel so helpless here in Auckland, is there anything I can do? Please note I do not have the power to stop the aftershocks!

Why is bottled water not being handed out. If there's bugs in the water even if your boiling (for at lleast 5 mins) surely some places in the rest of NZ can send down stuf. Come on NZ.

I'm not actually 100% sure it was "fresh". I think they were telling people to boil it still but there were fonterra trucks bringing it around.

We're in Woodend, just north of Chch and Kaiapoi and these aftershocks are still going on. We're lucky as we only lost power for a few hours but we're still having to boil the water and it's so hard to keep everything sterile with toddlers and a preemie newborn baby

I can't imagine what you are all going through down there. As an ex-HB girl I've been through enough earthquakes in my time, but nothing like what you've had. They are terrifying and the amount of aftershocks you're having, it must be so nerve-racking.

I wish there was something we could do from this end of the country!!
I hope you all get access to clean water soon and your lives back to semi-normal soon too.

I'm so over this! Too terrified to stay home alone with Isla during the day while DF works so have been going to either my sisters or my parents during the day. I can't sleep at night cause I'm always waiting for the next aftershock to hit. We are in Hornby and there is next to no damage to our property. Just a few small cracks in the walls we will have to get checked out but nothing major. But holy heck it's given me a right old shake up! If I had the money, I'd fill the car with petrol and head to Gore to stay with my Nana until it all sorts itself out. But I don't want DF to be here alone (and I wouldn't want to be without him) plus, someone has to look after our dog........ who is absolutely TERRIFIED! He normally sleeps in the kitchen but has slept under our bed every night since the big quake and he follows us from room to room.
Hopefully I can get more than 2hrs sleep tonight......
Hope everyone else is doing OK xo

Hi everyone glad to hear everyone's alright. I'm home by myself with the kids (school and daycare closed til Monday at least), DH doesn't get back from deployment til Monday. Have a bit of damage to the house (only occurred in the aftershocks) incl sunken floors, cracks in walls and foundations, piles under the house (yes I went under there last night ) are a bit wobbly so will have to be redone. Will put the renos on hold for a good few months as we won't be able to get builders etc.

I have 2 friends that have lost their houses so I'm considering myself very lucky

we finally got water back on yesterday only to find there was a leak in the water cylinder so now the halway is drenched , got the plumber coming out soon , Amelia woke up at 4am and had vomitted through her bed, then this mroning she did a diareah nappy so big it went down her legs , up her back , and when i went to take her singlet off she moved and i got it all over her hair and face , thankgod we had water so i could give her a bath , day 4 of this gastro bug now but health line doesnt seem to think i need to take her to the dr .

Emz- so sorry to hear about your house , hopefully no more damage will be done with these aftershocks

Nzlisa- I know what you mean , my dp has had work as normal all week and its been frighteneing at times with these dam aftershocks

iv got DP's DD today as well as amelia and shes 5 so quite aware of whats going on ( unlike amelia), shes coping really well for a 5yr old i thought , just runs under the door way when theres and aftershock and she makes sure she grabs amelia too , its very cute that shes been concerned about amelia too .

My kids have been really good, only one aftershock has upset them. They are just getting concerned with no preschool. We live in Brooklands so still have to boil our water and cant use toilets. Our road is really bad and has already given me a flat tyre. Our house has cracks that keep growing with the aftershocks and our garage is now about 15cm apart from our house and will need to be ripped down and built again. Capreces room was next to the garage so she has a massive crack through her room so is now sharing with Jack. We are just sooo lucky we can still live in our house because we know a few people who have lost their homes.

Hi guys, glad everyone is doing as well as can be expected. We have lost our house but we are hoping eventually we can rebuild on the land again. Our house was yellow stickered today so at least that means we have access to get out contents out. Now we just have to find a rental to put it all in! I must say we are pretty impressed with State insurance and had no idea that our house policy included payment for temporary accommodation (we are in a motel at the moment) and a rental for a year. It is certainly a weight off our minds.

Stay strong everyone! At least the after shocks seem to have lessened.

Oh Little_Red, I'm so sorry to hear that. You sound really philosophical about it.

Julz, that's so cute about P grabbing Amelia! Good girl. At least her school appears to be fine so should be open Monday (we live just down the road from her school, I've seen R drop her off a few times). The school I teach at (Halswell) is the worst damaged in Chch, 8 classes can't be used at all, so we've relocated 5 mins down the road. I'm just casual so I don't have to panic too much other than a huge loss in income, but will be helping set up/move stuff over the next few days before we open on Weds I'm thinking. Most of the classes damaged were the Year 1/2 area, poor little ones will be so out of place at a new big school

Sorry to hear that Little Red, very glad that you can get your stuff out though. Small blessing and all that. And well done State Insurance!
I hold my breath every time I watch the news thinking of everyone down there. My dad is down there and I didn't hear from him until yesterday.
I think all of you in Christchurch are amazing and I'll be wishing on every star that it's all over for you soon and life gets back to normal for you as fast as it is possible.

Sorry to hear about your house little_red, you are being amazing about it.

We are relatively ok, still need to boil water but I have plenty of bottled for drinking, just boiling for washing up etc. House has some cracks but hoping they are superficial, one looks pretty bad but again hoping it is not as bad as it looks. Both Dh and my work mostly unaffected, Dh work was running on Sunday and mine opened wednesday. College still shut and not sure what is happening with kindy, it's subsided but not been assessed properly yet, is on same street where other buildings of similar age have been condemned so not getting my hopes up about it, which is a shame cos it was a great kindy.

Oh yay, a quake as I type :(

Luckily we were in tekapo for the main quake, was still strong enough to wake me but the kids slept through and so far they seem unaffected. Quake drills been going on in this house though! and Mr 3 was helping me find quake damage to photograph, have explained about it, hard not to when all around is destroyed buildings and had to tell him about kindy but he seems ok about it.

oh kebakat, it wasn't fresh water just potable water and was for those who don't have water supply, so still needed/needs boiling the same as all other tap water. They were giving out some bottled but short supply. The supermarkets seem to have plenty though so not sure why that can't just be transferred to those that need it.

if anyone needs anywhere to stay, we are in Avonside (a block away from avonside drive) and have a fully furnished self contained sleepout available. untouched by the earthquake (our in laws were in it during the earthquake and they said it sways well)

PM me if anyone is interested, I have put it on TM and listed it with the welfare centres as well but haven't heard from anyone yet.
