Help - we need to go down to Palmy for chrissy and I will be 32 weeks pregnant at that stage. Flights are going to be super expensive, but the thought of driving all that way with a huge belly leaves me feeling all panicy! Any suggestions for how to manage such a long car journey with a toddler and potentially grumpy pregnant mummy!!!

Snacks snacks and more snacks! For both Mummy and toddler 
I remember driving Welly - Hamilton when I was pregnant. I think I visited all public toilets between here and Hamilton 
And a dvd player for the toddler

I'd fly! sometimes it is worth paying the extra to have a nice time. I had to travel to visit my midwife about 1.5 each way and it was EXHAUSTING, plus my feet got really swollen every time. -------------

I'd fly too and pay the extra, to me it's worth it when domestic flights are so short in NZ but drive times are so, so long.
However, if you can't fly then I agree with lots of snacks and also lots of stops to stretch your legs. Depends on your pregnancy, but I found I had my burst of energy/period of feeling great between about 30-33 weeks rather than earlier when I popped out suddenly and really struggled. So, for me, it would have been a good time to travel. Different for everyone though.. If you have the time I'd also look at breaking the trip up and staying somewhere overnight on the way just so you're not doing a massive stretch of sitting in one day. ------------- SJ Callum - Dec 2008 Daniel - Oct 2010 |

I would drive, that way at least you have your car with you if you want to escape the family you can with no problems of not having a vehicle. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Do you have enough time to stop somewhere on the way down for a night? Or do you have to get there in one day?
We went on a holiday when I was 30weeks pregnant, and stayed in different places around the north island. The longest stretch was Welly-Taupo on the way up and Tauranga-Welly on the way home, I didn't find it too bad though (mind you, we didn't have a toddler then hehe) just had to stop for a few loo breaks along the way ------------- DD 4yrs DS 2yrs http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

If it's out of your budget to fly, then drive but time it so you have breaks often, every hour or so, even just for 10 mins...my girls get car sick so we time it that every hour we will stop at the closest shops and buy a lotto ticket and some scratchies and have a stretch...just breaks the monotony a bit...all the best

| if you have to drive doing it over two days is better than one. are you driving down by yourself or with your partner. If there is someone to share the driving with and your toddler can sleep in his car seat leaving in the afternoon might be better as hopefully he will sleep through the end of the trip, where the longer stretches are. |

Thanks for all the tips - having a car down there isnt an issue as I can use one of the in-laws whenever I need to, We have decided to drive though, as we cant justify such a huge (over $700 for the 3 of us) cost at Christmas! I have told DH that if we are driving we have to do it at my pace and stop loads! Thanks again for all the tips!
