*** title should be : No sewage For 2 months!!!

I live in Christchurch and altho our home was not destroyed in the earthquake i am in one of the worst hit suburbs so there are houses condemmed in my street and alot of damage everywhere , we were without water for 6days after the quake and it returned late last thursday , no body from the council came to see us and we had no idea weather we could use the water or not so we have been using it , we received a letter today ( a week later ) to advise us that we can only use our water for drinking , we must NOT use it to wash clothing , bath , shower , use toilet, wash dishes etc etc as the sewers arent working . We heard a rumour from someone in the street over from ours that works for a company thats "in the know" that the sewers could be out for up to 2 months!!!! When we were without water for just 6 days my dd ( who is 14months old ) got a gastro bug and has bad diareah and vomitting) it was so difficult with no water for her to bath in , i cant imagine being without water for another 2 months!!! i dont know if i could even handle another week TBH

I was wondering what peoples thoughts on this were ? if you were going to be without water for 2 months would you stay at your home ? we do have one porta-loo in our street ( a small street of aprox 20 houses ) and we do have friends and family in chch that we could take showers at and do washing etc etc but it is just such an inconvinience . we are renting and my landlord is a really lovely guy  so i dont want to come across as rude or brash if i want to leave, i dont really know how to go about it if we were to move somewhere , we are in a lease so i dont know weather we would need to keep paying rent here and rent at alternitave accomodation.  what are peoples thoguhts on this ? would you stay in a house with no water for this period of time with a 14month old baby ?

Also , i Understand there are people ALOT more worse off than myslef , people without homes etc so i also feel that maybe i shouldnt even be complaining at all and just deal with it .

Julz I would ahve been gone from there long ago, you have done so well to cope this long.
I wouldn't stay, to me it just seems too hard and who knows, it could be longer than 2mths

Is there someone you could ask advice from regarding your rent agreement? Citizen's Advice? Has the Earthquake Comm. set up anything to help with things like this? I have never rented but I would assume that the owner would have to provide an inhabitable house and as he can't (obviously not his fault) then you would be able to get out of the agreement

Wow :(

I would also leave - it wouldn't be worth the hassles, and stress. When i think of how much water is used for so many things, i just cant imagine being without it. There must be some way out of the lease for this situation - if i was you id be on the phone calling anyone and everyone to find a way out.

Talk to the people that have taken over from civil defence(the recovery people), there are loads of things in place to help you out, check out http://www.canterburyearthquake.govt.nz/.
Your landlord should be insured to cover lost rent etc. I wouldn't want to stay and I'm sure he would understand especially if you tell him you only want to leave till the sewers are working. We are in an area where our water has been shown to be contaminated and just having to constantly boil water and be extra cautious with hand washing is bad enough I wouldn't cope if we couldn't use the toilet or wash either.

of course finding somewhere else to go might be an issue. Also do you have contents insurance? our insurer told us that we could leave and use up to 25% of our contents insurance to pay for accomodation, some insurers have a set amount instead of a %, so that may be worth talking to your insurer about.

The whole thing just sux doesnt it!

Personally I would wait to find out more first - because A) they have worked really hard and fast (even though it doesnt feel like it when your without water) to get it back going and I did hear them say that it will only go off now for short periods of time and B) finding somewhere is going to be the hardest thing ever. There is so many people that now dont have homes and with a shortage of rental properties its going to be damn hard to find one!

Do you have a meeting coming up in your area? I know they are having them this week and next week to discuss whats going on and how things are going to be done etc - so might pay to go along to one of those as well.

HUGE hugs the whole thing SUX.

I would wait too, or ring the council to find out how long they *think* it might take. If it is 2 months then I would probably look at going else where unless you could do your washing like once a week at a friends house or something and could buy your own portable loo, I think camping stores have them, we have one.
You have done well to stay there so long already!

What suburb are you in Julz? I heard that if you are without a sewerage system your house should have a yellow sticker. I'm not sure about the state of our water/sewerage etc as we had to move out due to the council slapping a yellow sticker on us because of the damage but I probably wouldn't stay if that was the case. I found it too hard and we don't even have a child.

Lol, sorry I am not use I so read that as in sewing so was intrigued as to why there was not allowed to be sewing hahahaha.

Why don't you ring the council and find out what the story is? Can you stay with someone temp while you have no sewerage coz I think you are CRAZY frog staying there now...dunno how you are coping!! Well done you.

PS you could still use for bathing, why not bath DD in baby bath and then tip on lawn afterwards? Same with dishes. You could even have sponge baths (tee hee). If you don't have a bath still could see if anyone on here has one you could borrow or get a mini paddling pool????
