since a male obviously decided ceilings should be white and fire ash should be black our ceiling is a lovely shade of grey
ive tried sugar soap and now its a lighter shade of grey
any other ideas to get it white again?
apart from painting it black so this doesnt happen next winter

You probably don't want to hear this, but the only thing that works on ours is jif and a lot of scrubbing.
For that reason, it only gets done when the in-laws are coming to stay

jif is an amazing miracle cream
or if you are lazy like me...paint it white again.

ill get up there again tommorow (if i have the energy) and give it a go with Jif.
also have to tackle the WHOLE kitchen and dining room, including wiping out the cupboards and cleaning the doors. and the bathroom - its growing mould on the ceiling above the bath/shower
Man that makes my house sound like a pigsty but it needs a real good clean; ive been away for 5 weeks and i dont think DP and flatmate did alot of cleaning

Mucky_Tiger - we had the same problem lol. i love a white or cream roof, but then this happens lol. when we moved in, it was clear that the guy who lived here before us obviously hadnt cleaned the ceiling in YEARS. was the strangest shade of latte with a hint of grey lol. we hand scrubbed with jif, then mopped (using a sponge mop) with sugar soap. cleaned it up pretty good. (could do with a new lick of paint which will happen at some point lol) but at least its as clean as possible.

Just a hint on cleaning mould, use white vinegar in a spray bottle, it wipes the mould right off and the vinegar kills mould spores. So much cheaper than buying cleaning sprays and a lot healthier than breathing in nasty chemicals.
I was a bit sceptical, but tried it this week and it works wonders.
