Hey guys,

This ime I am going to have a little poll! I have three names I really like, but have reservations about each of them. I have another few names that I just feel ho-hum about... so I'd rather not end up with a name that I thought was just ok.

Here are the names and my reservations:
1) Ashton... as already discussed, I worry it is too similar to Jackson (with the on/on thing)
2) Charlie... probably my favourite, but I don't like Charles and worry that Charlie is too kiddy, and no alternative name to give him choice with
3) Oliver... the one DH and I most agree on. But it's number 2 in popularity and Jack is number 1, so I just feel so unimaginative and boring using it.

So here are the questions... and feel free to add your 2c worth. Honestly, I won't be offended by anything anyone has to say. Unless it is insulting Jackson's name, because actually I quite like it, and changing it isn't really an option.

Question 1: Which do you prefer (and which goes best with Jackson): Ashton, Charlie or Oliver

Question 2: Is Ashton too similar to Jackson (ignoring nicknames)

Question 3: Is Charlie too kiddy, and would you go with Charles even if you have no intention of using Charles, and don't really like the name?

Question 4: Are you put off by using another name that is really, really common (ie Oliver).

Thanks in advance for any opinions!!

I  Charlie and IMO think it's not too kiddy, suits all ages, goes well with Jackson and is just all round nice

Ashton is also nice, but it was my Pop's middle name so I like it for that reason.

Oliver is ok, but yeah common as anything but that's not a reason to not use it if you both LOVE it iykwim?

I dont think Ashton is too similar to Jackson at all, if anything it flows nicely together, and makes them sound like they'belong' together, I have Brandon and Jaelyn, and this one will end in a vowel and 'N' as well, to keep them sounding like they belong together.

I'm always hesitant about common names (esp that high up the list) as by the time they start school, they will always be (for e.g) Oliver 1 and 2, or Oliver A and B, I grew up with at least 3 other girls of the same name in the same year at school, it was such a pain!

Charlie doesnt sound too kiddy to me... but then I watch 2 and a half men a lot

I have to agree with Babykatnz about Ashton and Jackson going really well together, and I really like Oliver, Charlie is nice but I tend to think of it as quite a cute name for a baby so not sure how well it would fit later on IYKWIM

I like all three! Sorry

I don't think Charlie is too "kiddie" though, I wouldn't stress too much about that side of things.

And personally, although we are also trying to avoid top 10 names so I know where you're coming from, popular names are popular for a reason. Especially ones that are more traditional. You know noone's going to look at his name on the school role in 10 years and go, oh they were just copying Brad and Angelina or something

If you guys both like Oliver then I'd go for it!

Question 1: Which do you prefer (and which goes best with Jackson): Ashton, Charlie or Oliver
I LOVE OLIVER!! Charlie would be my 2nd choice and then Ashton.

Question 2: Is Ashton too similar to Jackson (ignoring nicknames) I personally don't think they are too similar.

Question 3: Is Charlie too kiddy, and would you go with Charles even if you have no intention of using Charles, and don't really like the name?   I don't think Charlie is too kiddy but I have noticed it has become really popular as a girls name. I wouldn't use Charles unless I liked it and wanted him to be called by that name formally.

Question 4: Are you put off by using another name that is really, really common (ie Oliver). Kind of but it wouldn't be the over whelming decision. When we named our first son "Liam" it hadn't been that popular at the time and then the following year it became really popular. I still don't regret naming him that though as I love the name. If you really love Oliver then you should use it. :-)

I love Charlie - I would have had Charlie on my top three list easily but ex-DH wouldn't have it!  I can see it being okay at all ages too but then maybe that is because I like it so much!

Oliver I am biased about too I'm afraid given that it is DS's name.  I don't think it was at number 2 when we chose it though I don't think that would have put me off too much.  I don't think it matters apart from the twenty Olivers in the class issue!  It was the only boys name that we agreed upon so it had to be our choice and I still love it.

And Ashton...they are similar but like the others have said I guess you can see that both as a good thing or a bad thing so I just think you need to be comfortable with it.

I love both Ashton & Oliver.

I would pick Ashton.

I think the popularity of Oliver would put me off a bit, but if you are happy to have a popular name go for it.

Why dont you wait until little one is born and see what name you think best suits him at the time?

I prefer Charlie although I don't think Ashton is too similar to Jackson. I don't like Charles either, so igwym, but you could use Charlton as the full version? Course that has the whole on/on thing going on too

In your shoes I'd stick with a shortlist of 3 and choose one when the little tyke arrives.

Yeah I don't like using common names (I used to like Oliver but rejected it cos it was too popular) but maybe that's a teacher thing?

I never thought Ashton and Jackson were too similiar.

Charlie is not too kiddy for a grown up, plenty of gorgeous young englishmen named Charlie.

Oliver, I like it but the popularity would bother me. I know there are a lot of Jakes out there though so if you love it, use it!

I dont think Oliver and Jackson flow together personally so I would be going with either Ashton or Charlie.

Ashton all the way. I think it suits Jackson the best and definitely not too similar.
Charlie is cute........ which is fine when he is little.... and I spose could be 'cool' when he is a teen but I don't see it as a middle aged professional man kind of name (personally).
I do like Oliver, and also Ollie as the shortened version, but there are soooo many boys named Oliver these days, and I'd tend to stay away from popular names.... as I was always 'Lisa M' at school and hated it. There were 7 other Lisas at my primary school who were the same age as me. And my boss is also Lisa so even now I am 'Lisa M' and it sucks!

I like Oliver best, and think I'd go for it. I do know what you mean about being put off by it's popularity, though. That was the one thing I wasn't sure about with Jacob - it's fairly high on the list, and I imagine when this year's list comes out it will be even higher (damn Twilight )

I do think Ashton and Jackson sound similar. I always say the names in my 'telling off voice' and the 'on' I think is quite pronounced (but then that could be because I'm aware of it).

Agree with your concerns on Charlie although it is a cool name.

I really like Oliver..but would you shorted it to Ollie? It is a popular name now but I wouldn't let that stop me from choosing a name....when they're 20 years they're not really going to be aware that there name was number 2 on the popular names list back in 2010

Question 1: Which do you prefer (and which goes best with Jackson): Ashton, Charlie or Oliver

Ashton or Charlie

Question 2: Is Ashton too similar to Jackson (ignoring nicknames)

We have a Rhyley and Elodie - both ending with the ee sound and don't find this too similar (and one of Rhyley's middle name's is Ashton)

Question 3: Is Charlie too kiddy, and would you go with Charles even if you have no intention of using Charles, and don't really like the name?

If you have Charlie - how about Charlton? (charlie for short - as I do feel for a man Charlie is lil name but there are a few Charlies out there - adult men)

Question 4: Are you put off by using another name that is really, really common (ie Oliver).

Yes - I HATE hearing that there is heaps of kids the same name... When we named Rhyley there wasn't many around (had heard of 1 other) now they are popping up all over

Thanks in advance for any opinions!!

I'm with Ashton or Oliver. Like you, I'm not a fan of nicknames as first names - I just think there is more flexibility with a longer name. Someone on another forum said she chose names that would not be out of place in a boardroom or courtroom and that's a pretty similar principle to me.

If we have a boy, our boys will be #8 and #9 on the most popular list but meh, I like them! I wouldn't let that put you off.

The other thing is, for a name to be number one doesn't really make it that common. There were 342 Olivers born in NZ in the year to December 2009. There were 32,112 live male births and 62,543 live births overall. So the Olivers are less than 1.1% of boys or 0.55% of both sexes. Assuming even/random distribution (which isn't true but lets say it is for the sake of argument), in a class of 30 kids the likelihood of there being another Oliver is less than 16%.

I am a maths teacher actually to be statistically correct it's probably even slightly less because I looked up live births and the registered names will include the stillbirths as well.

I must remember this exercise when I'm teaching probability again to my Year 11s next year

Heh heh... thanks weegee. I guess that puts it in perspective a bit. BUT... I don't want people to think I totally lack imagination and had to resort to Top 5 to find names. We wouldn't consider Asher as our name is Winter... so avoiding all the 2 syllable er/er names.

Fliss... I had to go nosy at last year's list to see what numbers 8 and 9 were.

I think we have now ruled out Charlie. Although I really like it, I worry about the kiddie aspect and lack of a more formal name, and you're right about a lot of girls being Charli/Charlee these days. We ruled out a unisex name when naming Jackson for that very reason, so I guess I should be consistent!!

So, down to Oliver or Ashton. Maybe we will have to do the waiting thing!

Here are the names and my reservations:
1) Out of the 3, Oliver is my favourite and I think it goes well with Jackson too :)

2) Nope, I don't think it's too similar at all. I think if they were two 'son' names they would be but not a 'ton'and 'son'.

3) I think Charlie is cute, and fine for a grown up too. I don't think it's necessary to extend out the name. He'll probably end up with a completely unrelated nickname ;)

4) I probably wouldn't pick the #1 name, but those lists are from previous years, so number 22 might fly up the list and be number 1 this year, so if I really liked it I wouldn't care.

Aw I liked Charlie best!

I actually can't decide between Ashton and Oliver - I like both. I don't think Ashton is too rhyme-y with Jackson (and don't think it really matters anyway!). I also like Oliver (especially shortened to Ollie) a lot so wouldn't care about it being too common.

Actually, now that you mention it...... I know someone who has 2 boys called Jack and Ollie lol I always thought it sounded cute.
But you said earlier that you wanted to stay away from er/er names as your last name is winter.... But Oliver ends in er?? Is that why you are saying you would probably call him Ollie from Day one?? With the last name, I definitely think Ashton sounds better.
DF's last name is Richardson so I then had to put a strike through any name that ended in 'son' which sucked cause Jackson and Harrison were 2 boys names I'd always like and I loved Maddison for a girl, but I really don't like having the first and last names ending the same. JMO

Couldn't agree more . There's a reason why it's a popular name - because it's a nice name.

I am biased too though since I have an Oliver. So far, I have only come across one other little boy called Oliver. It'll be interesting to see what happens when he gets to school.

My pick would either be Ashton or Oliver. For what it's worth . Good luck though - naming kids is HARD!!

3) i would stay with charlie it's common but not too common and lots of older people are charlie

clearly as I have Ethan and Liam I am not put off by popular names..having a hard to spell, less common name myself I'm glad we went that way:)
