Hi there, was just wonering if anyone else is regularly doing this too???
I express first thing in the morning and BF DD through the day. Then DH gives her a bottle at 10pm (and i express again)
But lately she has been fusing on 5/6pm BF and plunket suggest i give her a bottle then too as my supply might be low. She is only 12 weeks old, is two bottles (of expressed milk) a day too much bottle and not enough boobie???

What if you BF her at the 5/6pm and then top her up with the bottle (or just do the bottle then if you prefer) and then just BF at the 10pm feed so you're still only doing one bottle?
That's the way we did it initially

Hi Chelle
Thanks, i think i might try BF at 5/6pm and topping up with a bottle. that could work well actually :)
Dont suppose you know when you moved from the one hole teats to the three hole teats? Thats my next wonder :)

My DD's were prem so I've always expressed as well as BF cos we had to give them bottle top ups at each feed. They haven't needed top ups since 10 wks so are BF for all but one evening feed - interestingly one of my DD's has started refusing her evening bottle but will BF so seems she's gotten too used to BFing now!
We've also just changed to the medium flow (2 hole teats) as the girls started fussing with their evening bottle - like they weren't getting enough quickly enough. Seems to have solved the problem.

My DS is supplementary fed after each BF and we have recently gone to 2 hole teats (at about 9 weeks). He has never had a strong suck, and we found he was getting very sleepy on 1 hole teats and would stop feeding a lot sooner. Then he would want his next feed much sooner. He was also a little fussy on them which was a bit of frustration I think (as that is what he does on the breast in the afternoons/evenings when it's not coming as fast as he wants).

My DD gets a bottle of EBM for her evening feed. We've been doing that since about 10 weeks old and it's worked wonderfully for us (for lots of different reasons).
Around that age she also used to get fussy around that time which is really common. So whilst I planned for the bottle to be for a later feed we've always done it at 6-6:30pm instead as the start of her night time routine. So, no matter what time her last BF was she still gets the bottle at 6pm. Then I found that she slept longer (because she was fuller) so I could fit dinner and an express in before she woke/needed another feed).
You've got to do what works for you but expressing enough for another bottle sounds like a lot of extra work to me. Just my opinion, but I'd just try the bottle earlier rather than expressing for a 2nd bottle.
Plunket can be great but they seem to think that top ups (and early solids) are the answer to everything.

The 3 hole one is for bottlefed only (so not when you're also BF) as I remember buying them and only once I'd opened it did I read that.
I can't remember how long we waited till we moved to 2 holes though, but don't think we waited that long as I figured since I seemed to have quite a fast flow myself that we could give it a go and he was happy with it.

I wouldn't recommend upping the teat size in a hurry just cos the boxes say you can - what can happen is that they then see the bottle as easy cos it flows faster than the boob and they don't need to do much - then they start to prefer the bottle to the boob.
I would also make sure that you're keeping your fluids and protein levels up in the afternoon as well.

i really should pay more attentio to my fluids...
We moved Evie up to the med flow teats yesterday, and it seems just the same to me? We have the Evenflo glass bottles, so the hole is (ever so) slightly larger, but still only one hole. Am BF in the evening and just offering a top up of milk in a bottle after her bath. Seems to be working but we will see.
