My teeth are playing up and I suspect I am going to find I need at least 1 filling.
I have a dental appointment tomorrow morning and when I mentioned this to a friend this afternoon she was horrified and said I can't go to the dentist at this late stage of pregnancy and that I should get antibiotics to cover me until after the baby is born. Google tells me a few different things, some say it is fine, others say that I need to be cautious about lying in the chair, another mentioned something about the anesthetic, should I have to get a filling.. I'm now very confused and don't know what to think! Has anyone had dental work done this late in their pregnancy? What were you told about the risks and how did you manage them? I can't actually remember how far along I was when I went to the dentist.
The dentist said it is fine to go during pregnancy, just as long as they are aware and you don't have an xray or any drugs that could harm baby. It was uncomfortable in the chair having a big belly, I had to sort of lift my legs up and lie on my side a bit. Could you phone your dentist and see what they say? -------------

I had a couple of filling at about 30 weeks - he didn't do and xray though, said to come back and have that done when I wasn't pregnant.
Don't see what any risk would be - I do think I might have been more senstive to the anaesthetic though as half my face went numb and I hadn't had that before! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I had a lot of dental work done throughout my pregnancy however, my dentist didnt like doing procedures during the 3rd trimester. Just a personal thing rather than cos you cant.
Im pretty sure TheKelly (she was a dental assistant) has said in the past its ok though. If you PM her she will be able to let you know  ------------- Our Angel July 08  Gone but not forgotten

I had a check up & clean a couple of weeks ago on the advice of my MW (apparently when yr PG its important to look after your teeth & gums cos they can deteriorate due to baby being the priority for nutrients). I would have been about 34 weeks.
I found lying in the chair was OK, was only 10-15 mins, they offered me a lead cloak so I could have an x-ray but I decided to postpone the x-ray till after I give birth. They found i needed one filling but not urgent so we decided to postpone that till after birth too - she said there were pain relief options that were safe for PG women but seeing as it wasn't urgent then it was ok to delay. ha ha now the only challenge will be getting back to the dentist while feeding a newborn!!! good luck ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com" rel="nofollow">  |

You definetly CAN go to the dentist, hell we had patients that came and they were a week away from being due ...I used to like watching the babies move when I was doing the suction .
The only problem you may have is being uncomfortable, but you can ask the dentist to let you sit up every so often , they wont care. And injections, there are plenty of safe to take injections in pregnancy. -------------

Heya, I too work for a Dentist (was an assistant 3 years, now practice manager 2 years) and our Dentist is more than happy to see woman through out their pregnancy (im 20 weeks and hes seen me twice already lol).
He does however like to have any major work done in the 2nd trimester (is clinically the safest time) and also because by the 3rd Trimester its usually uncomfortable to lie in one position for too long. Xrays arent reccomended but a lead shield can be used to minimise any exposure Xrays are nessecary. Better to have one less thing to worry about once that baby arrives i say! Sleepless nights, screaming baby + toothache! No thanks! PS: Agree with Kelly, Anaesthetics are fine to use :) You may find u have a little reaction to the adrenaline in them as ur heart rate is already increased by the pregnancy but is safe. Pregnant woman used to be my favourite patients, watching bub move in there and asking the mum all about it made my day :) |

Ahhhh you're lucky you still work there and have access to treatment NewMummyJade.....I worked as a DA for 6 and a half years (practice manager for about 4 of those) and I couldn't wait to leave by the end of it....but I forgot the best part, the free treatment 
And yeah, our dentist did prefer doing any major work in the 2nd trimester too, easier for them and the patient haha, me too ! I used to love watching the baby kick (and often cos the mum was lying down for so long they were very active ) and finding out if they knew the sex etc , that was cool...much better than the grumpy patients lol ! -------------

Bahh Grumpy Patients! Pregnant and new mummies that bring their new bubs in (and let me have cuddles) are what keeps me here I swear!
I seriously sometimes think Dental Staff need an online support group just to vent about thier days dealing with frustrating patients (and sometimes Dentists) hehe and the free dental treatment is such an added bonus I doubt id be so good at going if i had to pay lol

ohhhh that would be so good ! I haven't been a DA since May last year, but man I could have done with that back then ....did you get the ones that hocked up alllll their phlegm and erm, snot etc too? LOVED them ...NOT!
Whats the dentist you work for like? mine was odd, very quiet and reserved and every so often he would swear, while the patient was in the chair, that was awkward..... -------------
