Following on from the other homeschooling discussion thread, I thought I'd start one on lesson planning/ resource suggestions / curriculum creating etc. Useful for those homeschooling, wanting to, and those whose kids are in mainstream schools, but after ideas for more to do at home.

I'm pretty firm on only homeschooling if I have a room I can dedicate to the task. I know it could be done on the super cheap, but I'm having fun with my thoughts for now

List of resources so far
Pet Axolotl.
Globe
Old school encyclopedia collection
microscope
Thesaurus
Dictionary (to learn how to spell Thesaurus)
Dough and cutters
Paints and dyes
crayon box (kids have their own pencil cases with other stuff)
A variety of papers and some form of storage for them
mini beanbags
vase
massive whiteboard
A B C stickers for the wall
Koosh Balls
3 X large office divider pinboards

As much as I want a pet axolotl,   It would be cool to suggest to the kids that we get a class pet, and have them work on projects to study options, habitats etc, and decide on something for themselves.

I would absolutely love to take a NZ history trip up to Northland.

hehe, brainstorm!

Flake when I was teaching at one point in my class I had

2 guinea pigs, 1 axolotl, 5 fish, 4 tadpoles/frogs

The kids loved it and they all chose to research each animal at the beginning of the year so knew all about habitats etc. With the guinea pigs we did a unit around them before they came to school (they were at home with me on weekends and holidays)

For art wipeable table cloths are great for on the floor/tables to clean up mess. The crayola website has heaps of ideas

For younger kids a paddling pool/water trough and sandpit are great. Writing letters in the sand and exploring floating/sinking/ colours (food colouring in water to mix them etc)

An easel is handly I love my teaching station when teaching which is basically an easel on wheels with a whiteboard and storage underneath.

If I was homeschooling and had a dedicated room I'd have a library 'corner' with dedicated books for while at 'school' which you could get out from the public library. This is a favourite place for many kids in a classroom.

I could go on for hours about things to use in a classroom

ETA that classroom being anywhere that learning happens (home, beach, park, school...)

Little mini white boards are good too so you can sit around and have one each. I used them quite a lot for maths when doing one of my practicum's (primary school).
