Can anyone tell me what the big deal about wearing underwire bras when pregnant is? I have huge boobies, and maternity bras just dont give me the support that I need, and I actually end up really uncomfortable. I have "heard" that you should wear underwire when pregnant, but have no idea why?

I think it's because they can damage your milk ducts.
If i remember right they say you should start wearing them from around 28 weeks. Some people keep wearing their normal bra's right through though and others switch to maternity bra's early on. I hope that helps. -------------

I thought it was that they could block milk ducts once your milk comes in, rather than damage anything beforehand.
I wore underwires through most of my pregnancy (I am fairly large as well, and needed the support  ) but found the soft maternity ones more comfortable in the last few weeks.

I know the feeling.
Breast health (milk ducts: underwire needs to be in the correct place) is the main reason for maternity bras, and you can can some with a flexi wire which is pretty cool. The best thing to do is that as soon as your current bra is not feeling comfortable and/or you've changed size/shape is to get yourself off to get fitted correctly and buy the bras they recommend, unfortunately these aren't always cheap, but its worth it! I don't know of anyone to recommend in Akl, but in ChCh there is savior and U Fit In. These ladies specialise in fitting girls with larger boobies

I have been given conflicting advice on the whole maternity bra issue (which is backed up by the above comments I guess). I'm in a similar situation, I was a 16DD pre-preg so really feel like I need the support of underwire bras.
MW said it was fine to wear regular underwires right up unti you give birth because it is only at that stage that they can impact on your milk coming in. When I went to a bra shop though to get some cheap underwires they looked horrified that I would be wearing underwires still - they seemed to think that as soon as you don't fit your regular bras you should be moving to maternity/wire-less ones. I would probably place more weight on my midwifes opinion as she is pretty experienced, but thought that I'd get a range so I have one maternity bra, a couple of sports bras (with no underwires) and rotate these with the couple of regular underwire bras I still have that fit (kinda!). ------------- After 16 months TTC, surprise BFP July 10 DD1 Mar 11 After 9 months TTC, BFP on 4th Clomid cycle Feb 13 DD2 Oct 13 |

| I'm a 16H currently. If you are anywhere near my size then don't bother with standard maternity bras go for flexiwire ones. Elomi do a great one and you can get it from blestbras.com.au and I wore that all pregnancy and am wearing it now and its supportive and have had no issues with blocked ducts or anything even when my milk came in and I grew big big big time |

I was going to say the same - look for some flexi-wire ones. I've been in the maternity ones since i outgrew my regular bras at...oh, 13 weeks

Thanks Kebabkat (and everyone else!) - I am pretty close to your size...so will check out the flexiwire ones I think! My underwire ones are still perfectly comfortable, I have a bra extender for the back and they still fit fine in the cup (I lost weight in my first trimester, so maybe thats why!?!?) My maternity bras from last time just dont seem to be cutting it this time, its very strange. Might pop down to Avokado tomorrow and see what they have that I can try on!

I was in underwire until about 18 weeks and I actually mistook my gallbladder pain for the underwire! I have only small boobies so found no problem with the maternity bras but yeah like others have mentioned the whole milk duct thing but my mw assured me I could wear them as long as I felt comfy in it but told me it was better to wear mat bras/BF bras once baby came and for BFing. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Does anyone know of anywhere in Auckland to buy bras for bigger women. I am currently a 12F (having been a 10DD pre preg). Am currently 18 weeks, but found my normal bras didn't fit from about 7 weeks. I am finding underwired bras which were my staple uncomfortable, so if anyone knows of any good maternity bras for bigger people would be great to know (will check out the flexiwire).
Also does anyone know of anywhere to find a swimming costume that will support both my breasts and grow with bump? |

Blowing my own trumpet here... but you could check out MamaMore Maternity. We have the Double Plus Nursing Bra from Bravado which fit from 10D to 24F (and I've heard a lady with J cups wore them while nursing). I probably can't give you a link but if you google you'll find us. Jocelyn |

Hi Otter - try Avokado in Newmarket, they have lots of lovely bras and togs and they are really helpful. Rich Undercover in Greenwoods Corner are good too. I also bought some togs from http://www.maternitydirect.co.nz - Maternity Direct and although I was worried about them "containing" my H cup boobies, they are fine! Farmers stock a Triumph one that goes up to an F cup, and Bendon has one that goes to F cup too. My advice (from very recent experience) is to go and try on a few though, if you are an F cup now you will need room to grow and will prob end up a bigger cup size closer to the time. That doesnt automatically mean that you need a G cup though, just an F with some wriggle room in it! There is a lady out west who can fit you (she does it from her home) and she tells you what size you need to go and buy. I cant remember how much she charges, but she is a lovely old dear. I am currently a 16F in maternity and have been wearing these since early August, can anyone give me an idea of how much bigger I may get once my milk comes in? Would it be a waste of money to get prepared early and buy a couple in a G cup?
