Im part of am 'around the world in 50 dishes' night and have been given egypt (why couldnt i get japan or italy???). I have to make 4 dishes and have found heaps of recipes online but have never been to egypt so no idea if its really traditional food/ food that would be eaten there. If you've been to egypt, what kind of food did you eat there? Thanks!

I have been to Egypt. Their food is very eclectic these days and I dont know how much if it is traditional Egypt or imported traditions.

Lots of falafal and pita bread. Slow cooked stews. They like their Lamb these days. Not sure how traditional that is though! shish kabob's were everywhere too.

And rice pudding. Really good rice pudding.

We also ate a lot of dishes with lentils and chickpeas, dates and mint.

Hope this helps.

All I remember is eating pita's and salads. We would fill the pita's with all different kinds of salad and meats.....and hummus.

As clover says, very similar to Turkish food.

Lived in the middle east for 6 years and have been to egypt. We stayed in a international hotel so it was the same food as we were used too in saudi etc. So I would say normal middle eastern food such as:

Hummus and baba ganoosh with pita.

Lamb Kapsa (not sure spelling) lamb and rice cooked in a covered dish. The fat from the lamb flavours the rice.

Lamb/chicken kebabs. Bamboo stick ones not wraps.

Tabboleh and a greek style salad.

Dessert would be dates or stuffed dates with almonds. choc dipped are yummy too.

lol A and C mum. I lived 6 years in the middle east and saw one squashed scorpian in Jordan which we felt like taking a photo of as it was so rare. Don't worry about them. I would rather a scorpian over a cockroach anyday. lol.

When I backpacked through there we stayed well clear of meat and salads. I recall the food being really bland and tasteless but it was so hot nobody had much of an appetite anyway. The staple dish was rice and beans but a little bit spicy. The food was similar to Turkish food but not as tasty. I remember crossing the border to Israel and be spoilt by endless falafels stuffed with heaps of salad. Bliss!

lamb (esp slow cooked)

for dessert, baklava(sp!?) which is middle eastern in general but common in egypt. Basically its layers of filo pastry with nuts/honey/rosewater in between. Its nom!

Tahini, hummus, sumac, corriander and fatoush!
